How the HAMATIC self-winding hammer system works
Instead of a conventional central rotor, calibre 106.0 uses a pendulum-style hammer weight. As the watch moves, the hammer swings and drives winding through click levers and a reduction gear. The manufacturer describes the mechanism as bidirectional. It is also possible to wind the watch manually, so the automatic system is not the only way to replenish the mainspring.
The mechanism is visible through the sapphire display back. Moritz Grossmann’s 2025 catalogue puts the basic principle plainly: “Of course, the HAMATIC does not purport to be a perpetual motion machine – after all, the first automatic watch from Moritz Grossmann draws its kinetic energy from an external source.” Movement supplies the energy; the hammer mechanism converts it into winding.
GPHG describes the hammer as converting “even the smallest movement into impressive winding power.” That is the award organization’s promotional product description, not a published independent performance test.

Calibre 106.0: functions and specifications
The manufacturer’s HAMATIC information describes a purpose-designed automatic calibre with 312 parts and 38 jewels in the cited configuration. Its published operating specifications are:
- Power reserve: 72 hours when fully wound.
- Frequency: 21,600 vibrations per hour.
- Winding: automatic hammer winding and manual winding.
- Time-setting function: stop seconds, which stops the balance while setting the time.
These are manufacturer-published specifications, not results from an independent timing or durability test. The available evidence does not establish measured accuracy, reliability statistics or a comparative performance advantage over rotor-wound watches.

Case size, design and variants
HAMATIC is a model family, not a single unchanging specification. Case metal, dial finish, hands and edition details vary, so a specification or price should be tied to a precise reference.
For the general HAMATIC model, Moritz Grossmann lists a 41.0 mm case diameter and 11.35 mm case height. A potentially confusing 36.4 mm figure appears on GPHG’s listing for the pink-gold MG-002302; it is the movement diameter in the manufacturer’s specifications, not the case diameter. GPHG’s reference listing also reports 20 m water resistance. Do not assume that water-resistance figure applies to every HAMATIC variant.
