The most expensive Pokémon card with a record listed by Guinness World Records is a Pikachu Illustrator graded PSA Gem Mint 10, which sold at auction for $16,492,000 including the buyer’s premium. That price belongs to one exceptionally rare, top-graded copy—not to every Pikachu Illustrator or every card from the same era. Grade, exact version, sale terms and whether a result is for one card or a larger lot all matter when judging value.
What is the most expensive Pokémon card?
Guinness World Records lists the PSA Gem Mint 10 Pikachu Illustrator as the highest auction sale for a Pokémon trading card: $16,492,000 including the buyer’s premium. Guinness’s page says the sale took place February 16, 2026, although its record fields separately show February 15. Because those dates conflict, the safest date reference is simply 2026 unless the original auction record is checked. Guinness World Records’ record entry.

A separate Heritage Auctions result reached $5,000,000 in 2026 for a Pikachu Illustrator graded PSA Mint 9 with an MBA Gold Diamond enhancement. Heritage described it as the highest amount paid for a PSA 9 Illustrator and the second-highest auction price for any Pokémon card. It is not an ordinary PSA 9 comparison: Heritage says the MBA designation indicates the company would consider the card worthy of a 9.5, while PSA grades on whole numbers. Heritage’s Jesus Garcia explained, “Because PSA grades in whole numbers between 1 and 10, an MBA Gold Diamond means MBA would consider it worthy of a 9.5.” This is MBA’s assessment, not an official PSA half-grade. Heritage also reported that 15 copies were PSA 9 and one example graded higher.

These are reported realized prices for specific cards, grades and sale formats—not estimates for other copies. The distinctions in the sale type and price basis are essential: a complete set or three-card lot is not a single-card sale. For the Heritage results, the figures below are reported auction amounts; Heritage’s September 21, 2026 report does not separately specify in the cited summary whether each amount is hammer price or includes buyer’s premium.

Heritage reported that fewer than 20 of each No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 Trainer trophy cards were listed in any condition on the PSA census. For the Pikachu Art Academy winner card, it reported that winners each received 100 copies and that 56 copies had earned PSA Gem Mint 10 at the time of its report. Those population details help explain rarity, but they do not make a sale price transferable to a differently graded copy.
Why the headline price is not your card’s value
A record is a transaction for one specific copy under particular conditions. It does not establish a standard price for an ungraded card, a lower-grade copy, or a different printing. A raw card’s condition has not been certified by a grading company; even small differences in centering, edges, corners or surface can affect its grade and appeal.

- Match the exact card. Confirm the name, release, set, language, version and any distinguishing artwork or promo details. Two cards depicting the same Pokémon may be different collectibles.
- Match the grade and grading company. A PSA 10 sale is not a direct comparable for an ungraded card or a card with a different grade. Keep any special authentication or enhancement visible rather than treating it as part of the standard grade.
- Compare like sale formats. An individual-card result cannot be divided out of a set or multi-card lot to infer a precise single-card value. Sealed products are another category entirely.
- Read the price terms. Distinguish a public auction from a reported private transaction and a hammer price from a total that includes the buyer’s premium. Do not compare totals as though they used the same basis.
- Use recent realized sales. A record may be an outlier. Multiple recent sales of the same version and grade provide a more useful range than one exceptional result.
How to estimate what your Pokémon cards are worth
- Identify the card precisely. Record its set or promo, card number, language, edition and version. Compare the physical card with a reliable card checklist or image reference before searching prices.
- Assess whether it is graded. If professionally graded, note the grading company and exact grade. If raw, do not assume it would receive a high grade based on appearance alone; inspection under good light can reveal wear that is hard to see in a quick glance.
- Find comparable completed sales. Search auction archives and other records of completed transactions for the same card and grade. Prefer several recent results, and verify the sale date, geography or currency where relevant, and whether the amount includes buyer’s premium.
- Separate exceptional features from ordinary comparisons. Treat low-population premiums, unusual authentication or enhancements, and special provenance as distinct factors. Do not add a premium simply because a card is rare; look for sales that demonstrate buyers paid it.
- Use price guides as one reference, not a verdict. PSA describes its guide as based on PSA-certified or graded collectibles and says it is updated regularly. Its page displayed a latest update of June 24, 2025, and warns that listed prices may not capture the premium for a low-population card: “The prices listed in the PSA Price Guide do not always reflect the potential premium associated with a particular ‘Low Pop’ card.” PSA Price Guide.
Why a 35-card ranking would be misleading
A defensible ranking needs comparable, documented sales for each individual card, with grade and sale terms attached. The results available here establish standout transactions, but not a consistent, source-backed ordering of 35 individual cards. Filling the gaps with estimates, bundled lots or sealed-product prices would create a list that looks precise while comparing unlike things. The table therefore keeps documented card sales separate from complete sets and grouped cards rather than presenting a speculative top 35.

Creative Bloq reported a Fanatics Collect sale of a 2015 Japanese XY Promo Art Academy Fujishima Pikachu, also called Raincoat Pikachu, graded PSA 10, for $8.4 million including buyer’s premium in 2026. The report says the artist received 100 prize copies. That extraordinary reported amount would exceed the Guinness-listed Pikachu Illustrator figure, but it conflicts with Guinness’s then-current record entry. Without confirmation from the original Fanatics Collect lot record and clarity that the price components are comparable, it should not be ranked as an established record or used as a settled valuation benchmark.
