The Universal Genève FS is a manual-wind railway watch associated by specialist sources with Italy’s Ferrovie dello Stato (FS), or Italian State Railway. The name alone does not prove that a particular example was issued to or worn by a railway employee. To identify one, compare its case and dial with the three series described by collectors, then assess condition, originality and service history independently.
What is the Universal Genève FS?
“Ferrovie dello Stato” means Italian State Railway. Specialist watch accounts describe Universal Genève as a supplier of watches for Italian railway workers from the early 1960s. The practical design brief is apparent in the restrained, high-legibility dial: Arabic numerals and a subsidiary seconds display at six. Fratello’s scene-setting station image is explicitly imagined, not documentation of a particular watch’s history. Fratello’s account and Rescapement’s collector research provide the principal descriptions of the model and its series.
That railway association is not individual provenance. Without records tied to a specific watch, its name or case-back engraving cannot establish who owned it, whether it was supplied through the railway, or whether it saw railway service. Perseo’s official catalogue describes that brand’s own relationship with the railways, including pocket-watch supply beginning in 1927; it is useful context for Italian railway watch procurement, but does not verify Universal Genève’s production or the history of an individual FS. How to tell the three FS series apart
Specialist accounts place the three main series between the mid-1960s and mid-1970s. A seller’s Mark I, II or III label is a starting point, not proof: compare the actual case and dial, and allow for later repairs or alterations.

These are dimensions and visual traits reported in the specialist accounts, not a substitute for measuring the watch in hand. Rescapement reports 19 mm lugs for the Mark II; do not assume that width applies to the other series. Check the specific watch before ordering a strap or comparing measurements. Movement and construction
Fratello and Rescapement identify the movement as Universal Genève caliber 64: manual wind and non-hacking, meaning the seconds hand does not stop when the crown is pulled to set the time. Rescapement also describes it as not chronometer-rated. The 1916 Company repeated the caliber 64 identification in a 2026 article. Fratello says raised Arabic numerals on early-series dials were formed by stamping from the dial’s back, and describes “FS” engraving and a serial number on the case back. Those features can help compare an example with published descriptions, but none authenticates a watch alone: parts can be replaced, cases altered, and markings copied or misrepresented.
What production estimates do—and do not—say
Rescapement’s 2020 estimates are derived from sequential case-back serial-number ranges, not published here as official factory production records. Fratello gives a rounded overall estimate and notes that estimates vary.

These estimates do not establish how many watches survive, how many are original, or what a particular example should cost. The cited accounts do not provide a formal population study or a reliable current market-price series. Rescapement (2020); Fratello (2023).
What to check before buying one
Condition and originality are separate questions. A watch can resemble a published series description yet have a damaged dial, softened case, replacement parts or an unknown service history. The following are inspection prompts, not a formal authentication test.

- Match the series to the object. Compare case shape, measured diameter, dial material and small-seconds printing with the series table. Ask the seller to identify the basis for the series attribution.
- Inspect the dial closely. Request sharp, well-lit images that show the entire dial and its surface. Look for chips, scratches and cracks, especially on the enamel-dial versions. Fratello specifically advises careful dial inspection.
- Examine the case and case back. Check for the expected shape and sharpness of the case edges, and request clear images of the “FS” engraving, serial number and any reference details. Rescapement notes that polishing can soften the sharp edges of a first-series case; a serial number is comparison evidence, not proof by itself.
- Ask about the crown and other replacements. Fratello notes that independent servicing has left many examples with replacement crowns and identifies a Universal Genève logo as a useful expected detail. A replacement does not by itself establish that the watch is false, but the seller should disclose it.
- Request movement and service evidence. Ask for movement photographs where available, service documentation and a clear account of what was replaced or repaired. A watchmaker should inspect the watch before you rely on it for accurate timekeeping.
- Protect the transaction. Get the seller’s description, serial and reference details, condition disclosures and return policy in writing. If the evidence is incomplete, treat the series, originality and service state as unconfirmed rather than filling gaps with the listing title.
What the evidence can establish
The specialist accounts support a three-series identification framework, a caliber 64 attribution and an association with the Italian State Railway. They do not provide a primary Universal Genève factory archive for this model, nor records establishing the issue history of any particular watch. A published article author’s description captures the tool-watch intent, but is not manufacturer documentation: Henry Black wrote, “As you can see from the simplicity on display here, this is a tool watch first.” Fratello, 24 May 2023.
