The watch in this story is a vintage Douglas diver’s watch—not the Omega Speedmaster associated with Apollo 11. Heritage Auctions’ catalog says it was owned and worn by Neil Armstrong and came from his brother Dean’s personal collection. The auction record does not establish when Armstrong wore it, or that he wore it on the Moon.
Which watch did Neil Armstrong own and wear?
Heritage Auctions identified the watch as a vintage Douglas diver’s watch in its Armstrong Family Collection Part II sale. The catalog describes it as coming from the personal collection of Neil’s brother, Dean Armstrong, and says the lot would be accompanied by Dean’s signed certificate of authenticity. The ownership and wear claims are those made in the auction catalog.
Its black luminous dial is marked “Douglas/ Shock Resistant/ France.” The catalog notes an arrow-style hour hand, a date window and a world-time bezel. The caseback inscription describes a base-metal bezel, stainless-steel back, antimagnetic construction and tested water resistance of 6 ATM. The watch is manual wind.
How is it different from Armstrong’s Apollo 11 watch?
The Douglas is a personal watch associated with Armstrong in the auction record. It is not the Omega Speedmaster associated with Apollo 11. The auction catalog does not say that the Douglas went to the Moon, and the available account does not establish that Armstrong wore it during his test-pilot career.

D.C. Hannay’s 2022 Time+Tide article specifically cautions that there is “no concrete proof” the Douglas was worn during Armstrong’s test-pilot career. A connection to the X-15 is speculation, not documented provenance. Do not treat this watch as Armstrong’s X-15 watch or lunar watch.
What is known about the Douglas model?
The auction catalog confirms the visible features and construction details it describes, but does not provide all of the model specifications reported elsewhere. Hannay’s 2022 account describes it as a French skin diver marketed by Douglas in the 1960s–70s, with a 36 mm chromed case, stainless-steel screw-down back, bidirectional plastic world-time bezel, luminous open numerals, red seconds hand, date wheel and a one-jewel manual-winding pin-lever movement branded Wolbrook. These are details reported by that article, rather than specifications confirmed in the auction listing.

Hannay also describes Wolbrook as Douglas’s parent company and recounts a mail-order marketing demonstration in which watches were shipped in a water-filled container. That historical marketing story does not independently establish the tested water resistance of Armstrong’s particular watch beyond what its caseback inscription and the auction catalog state.
What did Armstrong’s Douglas watch sell for?
Heritage Auctions records the lot as sold for $6,875 on May 10, 2019. That is the result for this specific auction lot, not a current valuation or a representative price for Douglas watches. The catalog’s condition notes—including a scratched crystal and a likely need for cleaning—apply to this individual example, not to every vintage Douglas.

How does the modern Douglas-branded watch compare?
Wolbrook currently presents its Skindiver WT Professional as a re-edition and says watches in its professional line bear a Douglas logo. It is a modern related product, not Armstrong’s historical watch or an exact reproduction.
| Feature | Armstrong-associated vintage Douglas | Current Wolbrook Skindiver WT Professional |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Vintage Douglas diver’s watch; auctioned example described by Heritage Auctions as owned and worn by Neil Armstrong | Modern Wolbrook re-edition with Douglas branding in the professional line |
| Movement | Manual wind, per Heritage Auctions; Hannay’s 2022 article reports a one-jewel Wolbrook pin-lever movement | Automatic Citizen/Miyota movement, per the manufacturer’s page for the described automatic model |
| Case and glass | Hannay reports a 36 mm chromed case; the auction catalog describes a base-metal bezel and stainless back | 40 mm stainless-steel case and Hesalite glass, per the manufacturer’s page |
| Water resistance | Caseback inscription says tested to 6 ATM, as reported in the auction catalog | 120 m / 12 ATM, per the manufacturer’s page for the described automatic model |
| Best reason to consider it | Historical originality and the provenance attached to a particular auctioned example | Current manufacture and published specifications, without the historical provenance |
Vintage examples bring the usual uncertainty around an individual watch’s condition and servicing needs; the auction lot’s scratched crystal and likely cleaning requirement are not a condition report for other pieces. Manufacturer specifications for the modern model may change, so check Wolbrook’s current product page before relying on them.
