Its mechanism moves, but it is not a complete self-running watch: it has no barrel or full gear train and needs a person to supply power.
What Tourbillon 1000% demonstrates
A tourbillon places the escapement and balance in a rotating cage, traditionally to average out positional effects on a watch’s rate. Manousos enlarged the mechanism to ten times normal size so its parts and motion could be seen and inspected more readily than in a conventional wristwatch. The project is also a demonstration of a symmetrical co-axial escapement, a particular arrangement of the escapement components.
The scale is central to the idea: this is a horological teaching sculpture, not simply a miniature watch made oversized for display. The large parts make the relationship between the escapement and rotating cage easier to follow.
How the working mechanism is powered
“Working” means that the mechanism can move when driven; it does not mean the sculpture keeps time independently. Hodinkee’s 2014 account describes the model as the tourbillon mechanism and fourth wheel, without a barrel or complete gear train. It therefore lacks the self-contained power source and transmission that would make a watch run on its own.

We use eco-friendly, non-toxic materials with integrated full-color printing—meaning zero paint is ever used, it creates a safe play environment.
- EASY TO OPERATE---- Winding wrench clockwise,Push the gear gently,It will turn like a dream
- DECORATE YOUR HOME AND OFFICE--- The mechanical clock imitation toy is designed beautifully. Your guests will find it interesting and appealing with the entire setting and visible gear mechanism. Start the clockwork, you will send yourself back to the industrial age. Perfect for any desk, bookshelf or other surface. Great in any interior.
- MULTIPLE PURPOSES---- It’s a very cool desk accessory .It will be a good icebreaker when you lay it in your office desk or your home desk. Use it to waste time, relieve stress, tune out boring coworkers, or schooling youngsters in physics. It will be nice desk toy. Well demonstrated the gear structure and rotation of the clock.
In the documented demonstration, the fourth wheel is turned by hand to drive the mechanism. Hodinkee also describes changing the model’s orientation and pushing the cage by hand while holding the fourth wheel. These are ways to show the mechanism in motion, not normal watch operation.
How it was made
Autodesk’s August 28, 2014 profile says Manousos designed the model in Fusion 360 and printed it with a Kossel Clear PLA Delta 3D printer. Autodesk identifies ball bearings as the model’s only non-printed parts; Hodinkee likewise describes PLA components and ball-bearing jewels.

- 【Precision-Made Multicolor Components】Carefully 3D printed with clearly separated multicolor parts, precise gear connections, and detailed mechanical features. The compact design delivers an eye-catching miniature representation of a sophisticated tourbillon movement.
- 【Unique Desktop Display and Gift】The rotating triple-axis tourbillon creates a distinctive mechanical display for desks, shelves, offices, classrooms, and workshops. A thoughtful gift for watch enthusiasts, engineers, collectors, technology lovers, teachers, and students.
- 【Pre-Assembled and Ready to Display】The tourbillon model arrives fully assembled, so no DIY installation is required. Simply place it on your desk or display shelf to observe the interlocking gears and classic watch-movement-inspired structure right out of the box.
That combination illustrates how CAD and additive manufacturing can be used to make a large, inspectable horological mechanism. It does not establish that any current printer can reproduce the model reliably: Hodinkee’s report also describes hand adjustment, and neither source supplies a modern printer comparison or a transferable print recipe.
Build details reported in 2014
Hodinkee’s August 2014 coverage gives specific figures for this model. They describe the reported Tourbillon 1000% build, not general requirements for 3D-printed watch mechanisms.

| Reported detail | What the source says |
|---|---|
| Printed components | 23 components, according to Hodinkee (2014). |
| Ball-bearing jewels | Seven, according to Hodinkee (2014); Autodesk says ball bearings were the only non-printed parts. |
| Time per model | Approximately two weeks to print, make hand adjustments, and poise, according to Hodinkee (2014). |
| Tolerances | Around 100 microns for the model, as reported by Hodinkee (2014); this is not a general printer specification. |
The need for adjustment matters as much as the printed-part count: the reported build was not simply printed and immediately assembled without fitting work.
What Manousos said about additive manufacturing
In Autodesk’s 2014 interview, Manousos described his focus as “applying additive manufacturing to horology.” He also said he hoped 3D printing would help more watchmakers work independently, encouraging competition and innovation. Those remarks frame Tourbillon 1000% as both a mechanism demonstration and an exploration of how accessible fabrication might support watchmaking.
