The Nivada Grenchen Antarctic 35mm is a compact, manually wound reissue that puts mid-century styling ahead of extra complications. It pairs a 35 mm steel case and time-only Landeron 21 movement with Art Deco numerals, dauphine hands and a blued seconds hand. The proportions and vintage cues are the point; check the winding routine, fit and exact configuration before deciding whether it suits you.

What makes the Antarctic 35mm an old-school watch?

Nivada Grenchen presents the Antarctic as a return to the original model’s compact proportions and styling. The brand says it dates to 1926 and connects the Antarctic name with Antarctic expeditions in the 1950s; independent launch coverage describes the 35 mm model as drawing on the original. That is heritage context, not evidence that this modern reissue itself went on an expedition. The sources available do not independently document the expedition history. Nivada Grenchen and Hodinkee cover the model and its background.

The design favors restrained, period-inspired detail over a busy dial. Nivada Grenchen CEO Guillaume Laidet described his preference as: “I like the sober, assertive looks offered by small watches, as opposed to bulky, flashy ones.” That is a design preference, not a promise that one case size will fit every wrist.

Dial and hands

Documented features include applied indexes, Art Deco numerals at 12, 3, 6 and 9, arrowhead-style markers, curved luminous accents, dauphine hands and an elongated, blued central seconds hand. The caseback carries a penguin medallion. The manufacturer lists black, white and eggshell/off-white dials; independent coverage also describes lume and hand or dial variations. Confirm the exact specification on the listing for the particular watch, since launch coverage does not establish which variants are currently offered.

Specifications and what they mean in use

Specification What is reported Practical consideration
Case 35 mm diameter and 10.1 mm thick; polished and satin-brushed 316 stainless steel, according to Nivada Grenchen. Independent reporting gives approximately 41.9–42 mm lug-to-lug and an 18 mm lug width. Diameter alone does not determine wrist fit. Lug-to-lug length and the way the case sits matter too; try it on if possible.
Movement Landeron 21, mechanical and manually wound; Nivada Grenchen specifies a 36-hour power reserve. There is no automatic winding: you will need to wind the watch by hand. The stated reserve is the interval before it stops if left unwound, not a service interval.
Display Three hands, no date, according to the manufacturer. It is a time-only layout, without a calendar to set or read.
Crystal Sapphire according to the manufacturer; independent launch coverage specifies double-domed sapphire. Check the exact product description for the configuration being sold.
Water resistance 50 m / 5 ATM in Monochrome Watches and Fratello Watches launch-period specifications. This rating is not a guarantee for every water activity or for a watch whose seals have aged. Follow the seller’s and manufacturer’s guidance.

Case and movement specifications are from Nivada Grenchen’s product page; independent dimensions and launch details are reported by Hodinkee, Monochrome Watches and Fratello Watches.

How to decide whether this reissue suits you

Start with the proportions

The 35 mm diameter is compact by current watch standards, while the reported lug-to-lug measurement of about 42 mm and 18 mm lug width help describe how it may sit and what strap width it takes. These figures are useful starting points, not a fit guarantee: wrist shape, lug curvature and personal taste all affect how a watch wears. If you prefer a larger presence, Hodinkee points to the larger Super Antarctic as an alternative.

Be comfortable with hand-winding

The Landeron 21 is manually wound and offers a manufacturer-specified 36-hour reserve. Choose it if the act of winding and a simple three-hand display appeal to you. If you want a watch that keeps itself wound through wrist movement, this is not the configuration to choose.

Compare the exact dial and attachment

Black, white and eggshell/off-white are listed dial choices, but published coverage notes differences in lume, hands and strap or bracelet options. Look at the exact listing and photographs rather than assuming every combination is available. An 18 mm lug width is reported by independent coverage, which is helpful when considering replacement straps.

Choose modern reissue or vintage ownership

The new watch offers contemporary construction while borrowing the original’s look; buying a vintage Antarctic instead means assessing the condition and history of a specific older watch. Hodinkee frames this as a choice between the reissue and vintage ownership. The sources here do not establish a universal winner: prioritize whether you want a new-production watch with stated specifications or an individual vintage example.

Launch pricing is historical, not a current quote

Nivada Grenchen’s launch-era offer was 800 EUR / 770 CHF / 850 USD, with deliveries planned for March 2024. Independent 2023 coverage reported a USD 850 strap version and a USD 1,050 bracelet option. These figures describe the launch period; they do not verify today’s price, stock, regional availability or currently offered configurations. Check a current seller or the manufacturer for those details.
