The Nivada Grenchen Antarctic GMT is a compact 36 mm automatic watch with an independently adjustable GMT hand, a rotating internal 24-hour bezel and a vintage-style plexiglass crystal. The name “Hodinkee Limited Edition” needs care: Hodinkee documented a 99-piece Tropical-dial launch, but the available official pages do not confirm a separate production run for a distinct edition under that exact name.

Specifications are not entirely uniform across sources: Nivada lists the case thickness as 11.1 mm, while Hodinkee measured 11.6 mm. Hodinkee also described a polished top and sides with a brushed underside; Nivada’s specification lists the finish as brushed. Nivada Grenchen’s product page and Hodinkee’s November 2024 launch report provide the respective specifications.
What is the Hodinkee Limited Edition, and how many were made?
Hodinkee reported that the revival launched on November 14, 2024 in two versions: a 99-piece Tropical-dial edition and a standard-production black dial modeled on the vintage watch. Both were reported at $1,600 on leather. Nivada’s current product page labels the Tropical dial “99 only” and also shows a standard black dial.
Those sources establish the 99-piece count for the Tropical variant, not a separate run for a watch officially titled “Nivada Grenchen Antarctic GMT Hodinkee Limited Edition.” The retrieved primary pages do not confirm a distinct reference or production number for an additional Hodinkee-branded edition. Claims of another run, including a figure of 225 pieces, should therefore be treated as unverified unless Nivada or Hodinkee publishes a product record confirming it.

How the GMT and internal bezel work
The Antarctic GMT has two crowns, each with a separate job. The crown at 2 o’clock rotates the internal 24-hour bezel; its black and yellow sections distinguish night from day. The crown at 4 o’clock sets the watch. According to Hodinkee, its first position adjusts the GMT hand clockwise and the date counter-clockwise, allowing the 24-hour hand to be set independently of local time.
The SOPROD C125 automatic movement also drives the central hour, minute and seconds hands and provides a 42-hour power reserve. This is a more practical travel-time arrangement than the original watch’s movement: Nivada says the vintage AR-1146 did not allow independent adjustment of the 24-hour hand.

Is it a true compressor watch?
The Antarctic GMT uses an internal rotating bezel operated by a second crown, a configuration associated with compressor-style watches. The sources describe that construction and the bezel’s operation, but do not establish that this model uses a particular compressor case system or meets a formal definition of a “true compressor.” The clearest description is an internal-bezel GMT with two crowns.
How it wears and what the vintage design means
The 36 mm case, 40 mm lug-to-lug measurement and cushion-like geometry make this a comparatively compact GMT. Its matte black dial has applied metal indices with Super-LumiNova, while a black-and-red checkerboard GMT hand provides a contrasting readout. An engraved Antarctic penguin appears on the caseback.

Nivada says the modern watch was inspired by a vintage Antarctic GMT found through the Hodinkee Shop. Hodinkee’s TanTan Wang reported in November 2024 that Guillaume Laidet said the revival was developed from photographs and dimensions in the old vintage listing, which identified a late-1960s reference 87013. Nivada dates the original model’s introduction to the early 1970s and says production ended in the early-to-mid-1970s as the quartz crisis interrupted the line.
Is the plexiglass crystal practical for daily wear?
Plexiglass suits the watch’s vintage appearance and, as Hodinkee observed, reduces visual distortion. Its trade-off is scratch resistance: Wang reported visible scratches after only a few days of wearing the review watch. That is a documented experience with one reviewed watch, not a controlled durability test, but it illustrates the care a scratch-prone crystal may demand in regular use.

The watch is rated to 5 ATM water resistance. That rating and the vintage-oriented crystal make it sensible to treat the Antarctic GMT as a daily-wear watch for ordinary conditions rather than assume it is suited to swimming or rough use. Hodinkee also found the internal-bezel crown less tactile when turned in reverse, which can make precise bezel alignment harder.

Nivada specifies a 20×16 mm strap: 20 mm at the lugs, tapering to 16 mm at the buckle. Its listed options include racing straps, leather, beads-of-rice bracelet and Tropic rubber. A 20 mm strap with a compatible taper and buckle width can broaden the choices to rally, leather, suede or rubber styles.
