Watch-hand names describe the shape of the indicators that rotate over a dial—not a movement or complication. The quickest way to identify a style is to compare its outline, taper and tip, then look at its finish, lume and proportions alongside the hour markers. Baton, dauphine, sword, feuille, alpha and Breguet or moon hands are common starting points, but some labels overlap and brands do not always use them identically.
How to identify a watch hand
A watch hand is a lightweight indicator that moves around the dial, with or without graduations, as the Fondation Haute Horlogerie explains in its watchmaking glossary. To distinguish similar styles, check five features:
- Silhouette and tip: Is the hand rectangular, blade-like, leaf-shaped or pointed? Does it end in a sharp point, a blunt end or an open circle?
- Taper and base: Does it narrow toward the tip, widen from a narrow base, or stay nearly the same width?
- Faceting and finish: Polished and brushed planes can make a hand look different as the dial catches light.
- Lume: The size and placement of luminous material affect how easily the hand can be read in the dark.
- Proportion and context: Compare the hand’s width and length with the dial markers, and consider whether the design suits a dress, pilot or tool watch.
Names are useful shorthand, not a universally strict taxonomy. A photograph may hide a hand’s profile or finishing, and collectors and brands can use some terms differently.
Common watch hand styles
| Style | What it looks like | What to notice |
|---|---|---|
| Baton or stick | Straight, rectangular bar. | Simple geometry; “baton” and “stick” often overlap in everyday use. |
| Dauphine | Tapered hand narrowing to a point. | Usually faceted, often with polished and brushed planes that sharpen its appearance. |
| Sword | Broad, blade-like pointer. | Its relatively large surface can carry lume; the shape is often used where legibility is important, including pilot and tool watches. |
| Feuille or leaf | Curved outline resembling a leaf. | Feuille means “leaf” in French watchmaking terminology. |
| Alpha or lance | Narrow at the base, widening into a spear-like body before ending in a sharp point. | Check the base and the hand’s profile to distinguish it from a dauphine. |
| Breguet, moon or pomme | Slender hand with an open circular or hollow “moon” tip. | The distinctive open-tipped pomme shape is associated with Breguet; the brand’s historical account dates its design to about 1783. |
How to tell dauphine from alpha hands
Both styles can taper to a point, so the tip alone may not settle the question. A dauphine is generally a tapered, often faceted hand. An alpha or lance hand begins with a narrower base, broadens into a spear-like body, and then ends in a point. Inspect the whole outline—especially the base and side profile—rather than relying on a listing’s label.

What Breguet, moon and pomme hands mean
These names refer to the slender hand with a hollow, circular tip that resembles a moon. Breguet’s historical account dates the distinctive design to about 1783 and notes that “Breguet hands” entered watchmaking vocabulary. The brand’s Classique collection describes the open-tipped pomme form as a house signature. The terms are related, but usage can vary by brand and context.
Other names you may encounter
Watchmaking’s visual vocabulary draws on familiar objects and forms. In addition to the main styles above, you may see spade, poire, cathedral, skeleton, arrow, syringe, Mercedes, snowflake and plongeur hands. Some names evoke weapons, plants, cars, architecture or other imagery; their boundaries are not always consistent. Patek Philippe Magazine discusses how hand nomenclature borrows from “weaponry, botany, and French monarchy,” as well as other visual references.

Which watch hand style is easiest to read?
No shape is universally easiest to read. A broad sword hand may provide room for lume, while a crisp faceted dauphine can stand out through reflected light. Actual readability depends on the hand’s width and contrast against the dial, lume area, dial texture and marker design, as well as the watch’s intended use. For low-light use, look at the amount and placement of lume; for bright conditions, check whether the hands remain distinct against the dial rather than disappearing into reflections or a similar color.
Can watch hands be replaced?
Yes. Watch hands are physical components that can be replaced, but fitting a different set is not simply a matter of choosing a style. The hands must have the correct dimensions and fit the watch, and removal or installation requires careful handling. If you are restoring or customizing a watch, confirm compatibility with the movement and dial and use a qualified watchmaker when you are unsure; an ill-fitting hand can interfere with other hands or the dial.
