Its appeal is the contrast: precious-metal heft with a restrained, sporty appearance rather than the familiar look of a gold bracelet. At Rolex’s current US list price of $40,000, it makes the most sense for someone who wants that specific mix—not a conventional dive watch or an understated bargain.
What is the Rolex Yacht-Master 42 ref. 226659?
Rolex identifies it as the “Yacht-Master 42 Oyster, 42 mm, white gold.” The case is solid 18 ct white gold, not stainless steel or a two-tone combination. A black dial sits under a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with a Cyclops date lens. The black Cerachrom bezel rotates in both directions and carries a 60-minute scale. Rolex publishes the dimensions, movement specifications and performance claims on its product page and in its Yacht-Master brochure. The precision figure is the brand’s stated standard after casing, not a timing result from an independent test of this particular watch.

How Oysterflex works—and what it feels like
Oysterflex is not simply a rubber strap. Rolex describes it as flexible titanium-and-nickel-alloy blades overmoulded with high-performance elastomer. It attaches with an Oysterlock safety clasp and incorporates Glidelock adjustment. Rolex calls the patented bracelet a “sporty alternative to metal bracelets.” Rolex
The construction gives the watch a more casual look than a full precious-metal bracelet while retaining a metal structure beneath the elastomer. Hodinkee characterized it as practical and casual. That is an attributed description, not a claim that every wearer will find it comfortable: fit depends on wrist shape and bracelet sizing. Does the Yacht-Master 42 wear large?
It is a 42 mm sports watch, and Fratello says it wears larger than a typical 40 mm sports Rolex. The case size alone cannot determine fit; wrist shape and how the watch’s proportions sit matter. Is it a dive watch?
The Yacht-Master 42 has a bidirectional timing bezel and a 100 m water-resistance rating. Those specifications suit general water use and the model’s sailing-oriented identity, but they do not make it a dedicated dive instrument. Fratello describes the Yacht-Master as a lifestyle piece rather than a tool watch. If your priority is a watch designed around dive timing and the role of a dive watch, compare it with the Submariner instead of treating the Yacht-Master as a substitute.

Rolex listed the 226659 at $40,000 in the United States on its product page accessed October 1, 2026. That is a current US list price, not a promise of availability or a price for every country. Hodinkee reported a launch price of $27,800 in 2019, a historical figure that should not be mistaken for today’s price. Hodinkee, March 22, 2019

Is the Rolex Yacht-Master 42 white gold worth it?
It is worth considering if you specifically want the combination of a solid white-gold case, black sport-watch styling and Oysterflex—not merely a Rolex at a high price. The calibre 3235 offers Rolex’s stated approximately 70-hour reserve and −2/+2 seconds-per-day precision after casing, while the bracelet construction provides a different look and feel from a metal bracelet. Those are meaningful attributes, but they do not erase the trade-offs: a $40,000 US list price, a case that may wear large, and a sailing/lifestyle watch specification rather than a dedicated dive role.
