The Nivada Grenchen Chronoking Racing Mecaquartz is a 38mm retro-styled chronograph family with quartz timekeeping and a mechanically operated stopwatch function. It is a promising fit if you want a compact, vintage-inspired watch with 100m water resistance, but check the exact reference before comparing dimensions, movement caliber, date display, or price: those details are not universal across the Chronoking range.

What is the Chronoking Racing Mecaquartz?

It is a chronograph family within Nivada Grenchen’s Chronoking collection. The brand’s current collection page shows Racing Carbon, Green, Grey, Blue, and Black variants, alongside Chronoking models with other movement types. Its collection price display starts at $610, but that is not a guarantee that every variant or configuration costs that amount. Nivada Grenchen’s Chronoking collection

For a concrete reference, Watches of Switzerland lists the Racing Carbon ref. 87049Q01 at $610. That listing describes a 38mm case and a TMI VK63 movement. The price is the retailer’s displayed price when accessed in 2026; confirm the live listing, market, and configuration before buying. Watches of Switzerland: Racing Carbon ref. 87049Q01

What does “mecaquartz” mean in practice?

A mecaquartz watch combines quartz timekeeping with a mechanical module for the chronograph. Nivada Grenchen’s press release explains that architecture for an earlier Chronoking Aviator Sea Diver edition; it is useful for understanding the term, but does not establish the Racing line’s exact caliber. The practical appeal is quartz-based timekeeping with a mechanically operated stopwatch mechanism, rather than a fully mechanical watch. The brand’s CEO, Guillaume Laidet, described it as “A battery-powered watch with a ‘mechanical’ feel!” Nivada Grenchen press release

Which specifications apply to the Racing Carbon?

The most reference-specific published specification set in the available retailer listing is for Racing Carbon ref. 87049Q01. Time+Tide’s 2025 launch coverage gives some different details for the Racing line, so use the source and reference when relying on a figure rather than treating one set of specifications as universal.

Specification Racing Carbon ref. 87049Q01 Racing line launch coverage

Time+Tide also reports battery life of approximately three years and accuracy below ±20 seconds per month for the Racing movement. Those are launch-coverage figures, not independent test results. Its report identifies five dial variants and says the black carbon dial was limited to 500 pieces at launch; that launch-era limit does not establish current stock or resale availability. Does every Chronoking have a date?

No. The brand’s general Chronoking description mentions an unusual date at 12 o’clock, but that should not be applied to every Racing Mecaquartz. The brand collection’s filter for the shown 13-product set says “Display Date: No,” and the Racing Carbon listing does not state a date feature. Check the individual reference’s dial and specification listing rather than relying on the collection-wide description. Nivada Grenchen Chronoking collection

How do the options and prices compare?

The brand’s collection currently displays prices from $610, while Watches of Switzerland lists Racing Carbon ref. 87049Q01 for $610. Time+Tide reported launch prices from CHF 560 on rubber or leather and CHF 760 on a bracelet when the Racing line became available on September 25, 2025. The currencies, dates, markets, and configurations differ, so these amounts are not directly comparable as like-for-like offers. Check the current price for the exact reference and strap or bracelet configuration before ordering.

Who is it a good fit for?

  • Consider it if you want a 38mm retro-style chronograph and prefer quartz-based timekeeping with a mechanically operated stopwatch function.
  • Compare the exact reference if case thickness, lug-to-lug length, movement caliber, or date display will determine whether it works for you. Published Racing details vary by source and reference.
  • Check the configuration if you have a strong preference for a particular dial, bezel, strap, or bracelet; launch options do not guarantee current availability.
  • Look elsewhere if you specifically want a fully mechanical chronograph or need a verified date display on the watch you are ordering.

The published figures are product specifications and launch details, not evidence from comparative testing or an independent ownership and reliability study. They can help narrow a purchase decision, but do not establish long-term durability or how the watch wears on a particular wrist.

What to verify before buying

  1. Match the reference. Confirm the full reference number on the product page and invoice; do not assume a specification for Racing Carbon ref. 87049Q01 applies to another dial variant.
  2. Check the movement and dimensions. Confirm the caliber, thickness, and lug-to-lug figure for that reference, especially if the difference between 13.4mm and 13.7mm matters to you.
  3. Confirm the dial details. Check whether the exact watch has a date and whether the bezel and dial shown in the listing match the model you want.
  4. Compare the complete configuration and price. Verify the market, currency, included strap or bracelet, current availability, and return terms with the seller.
