The Nomadic Maraí 401 Crimson Dawn in Fratello’s hands-on review is the 40mm model from 2024, not the redesigned 2026 watch now listed by Nomadic. Jorg Weppelink found the earlier version comfortable and visually appealing, but thought its familiar dive-watch styling and awkward handset kept it from standing out. The distinction matters: the current listing describes a 36mm option and a different movement, and does not state a water-resistance rating.
Which Maraí 401 does the hands-on review cover?
Fratello’s April 17, 2024 review covers reference 4014000CD: a 40mm stainless-steel Maraí 401 with a matte black dial, burgundy bezel and gilt-tone details. Its €1,149 price is the price reported for that edition by Fratello in 2024, not a current quote or a like-for-like comparison with Nomadic’s 2026 US listing.

How did the 2024 watch wear and look?
Comfort and proportions
Weppelink describes the watch as comfortable and easy to wear, pointing to its relatively slim profile and bracelet. The published dimensions—48mm lug-to-lug and 11.5mm thick—give more context than diameter alone for readers judging how a 40mm watch might sit on the wrist. Individual fit still depends on wrist shape and preference.
Dial, bezel and brand details
He liked the combination of matte black, burgundy and gilt-tone accents. The yellow seconds hand and custom rotor add brand-specific touches, though the seconds hand became one of his reservations: he felt its brightness sat uneasily alongside some of the vintage-inspired styling.
Handset and originality
The review’s main design criticism is that the watch feels familiar in a crowded dive-watch category. Weppelink also found the hands less successful than the rest of the design, describing the hour hand as a short baton that feels cut off. In his view, a brand-story detail should not undermine the overall visual balance.
What changed in Nomadic’s 2026 listing?
Nomadic’s official US product page lists a “Crimson Dawn – Maraí 401 Compact – 36mm Dive Watch (2026 Edition)” and presents 36mm and 40mm sizing options. The page’s detailed dimensions below are for the 36mm Compact; they should not be attributed to the 2024 40mm reviewed by Fratello.

The manufacturer says the redesign refines the case profile, adds a new dial marker and handset, and introduces a permanent date window at 6 o’clock across the Maraí range. Those are Nomadic’s descriptions of the redesign, not independent review findings. The 2026 page also specifies a ceramic unidirectional bezel, quick-release spring bars and bracelet links with screw fittings.

Do not assume the earlier model’s 200m rating carries over: the current product page does not state a water-resistance rating for the redesigned watch. Anyone buying it for water use should confirm the rating for the exact size and edition with Nomadic before purchase.

For the 2024 watch, the value question is subjective: Fratello reported a €1,149 price and praised its wearability and color combination, while criticizing its familiar overall design and handset. That is a grounded way to assess that edition, but it is not a current market comparison or a verdict on the redesigned watch.
