Start by identifying whether the clock is mechanical or battery-powered, then make only the checks that fit its type. A moved or poorly positioned mechanical clock may have a simple setup problem; if it remains stopped, runs erratically, or appears damaged, stop and have a qualified clockmaker assess it.
Identify the clock before troubleshooting
Look for a battery compartment or quartz movement before trying to wind anything. A battery-powered clock does not use a winding key. If it is mechanical, determine whether it is regulated by a pendulum or a balance; instructions for starting a pendulum do not apply to every mechanical clock.

What to check on a mechanical pendulum or weight-driven clock
1. Look for transport restraints
If the clock was recently moved or unpacked, check for packing material or a transport restraint that should have been removed. Do not pull or force anything if you are unsure what it is.

2. Check the clock’s position and clearance
Make sure the case is stable and securely positioned. A longcase or wall clock should be securely fixed. Check that the pendulum can swing without hitting the case and that weights do not strike one another or the case.
3. Check the pendulum and visible parts
Confirm that the pendulum hangs correctly, is attached, and has no obvious damage. Look for hands touching each other, the dial, or the case, as well as misplaced weights. Do not bend parts or force them into position. Howard Miller’s floor-clock troubleshooting guidance also identifies suspension-spring alignment and pendulum-guide placement as checks for applicable models.

4. Wind only if the clock is mechanical and the key fits
If you have confirmed that this mechanical clock is due to be wound, use its appropriate, well-fitting key and turn it gently and steadily. Key types vary. Stop if you feel unexpected resistance; do not force the key or abruptly stop at the end of winding. These are general owner precautions from the Institute of Conservation’s clock guidance.

For a pendulum clock, release the pendulum with a small, even swing. The Institute of Conservation suggests moving it about one centimetre to either side before release; moving it too far can damage the mechanism. If the clock does not continue running, do not keep increasing the swing.

What it means if the clock stops again
Listen and observe after a restart. A clock that repeatedly stops, runs erratically, or fails to strike for its expected duration needs attention; that behavior is not proof that it simply needs more winding. If a mechanical clock that previously worked for years becomes slow or stops, Howard Miller advises contacting an authorized service center for its applicable floor clocks. The Institute of Conservation likewise recommends professional advice when a clock will not run or strike for its full duration.
When to stop and consult a professional
Do not take an unfamiliar movement apart or try to clean and oil it as a quick fix. The Canadian Conservation Institute says a full mechanical assessment should come before repair intended to make an old clock work, and warns that inexperienced cleaning or disassembly can damage parts. Old mechanisms may be incomplete, worn, deteriorated, dirty, or improperly lubricated; their apparent simplicity does not make home repair safe.

Seek a clockmaker or horological conservator familiar with historic objects if the clock remains stopped after the appropriate basic checks, behaves erratically, shows damage, or has uncertain completeness or historic value. Professional cleaning and correct lubrication are specialist work, not a general-purpose DIY remedy.

A stopped clock does not automatically need to be made operational. Weigh its completeness and condition, historic or sentimental value, your preference for it to run, and the risks that intervention could introduce. A rare or historic clock may not be repairable without compromise, according to the Canadian Conservation Institute’s care guidance. The Institute of Conservation also frames the choice as whether to keep the clock static or have it repaired to work.
