Omega Aqua Terra XXL Review: A Discontinued 49.2 mm Aqua Terra

The discontinued Aqua Terra XXL pairs a 49.2 mm case and small seconds with manual winding. Here’s what its size, movement and used-watch checks mean.

The Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra XXL is a discontinued, hand-wound Aqua Terra built around a 49.2 mm case and small seconds. Its size is the point—and the main reason to try one on before buying. The steel reference most associated with the model is 231.13.49.10.06.001, with an anthracite, teak-style dial and calibre 2211. Omega’s official specifications for the separate white-gold limited edition confirm the XXL’s manual-wind character and 53-hour reserve, but details can vary by reference.

What the Aqua Terra XXL is

The XXL was an unusually large member of the Aqua Terra family, not simply a standard Aqua Terra with a slightly bigger case. The OmegaForums family history says the line followed the Railmaster XXL’s withdrawal around 2010 and continued through 2014. It identifies steel reference 231.13.49.10.06.001 as the main full-production version. The watch is discontinued; Omega labels its white-gold limited-edition reference 231.53.49.10.04.001 discontinued as well.

The steel model’s defining combination is a grey, vertically engraved teak-style dial, a small-seconds display at six, hand winding and a display caseback. Those elements give it a distinctly pocket-watch-like feel, despite the Aqua Terra name. Other precious-metal and special-dial variants exist, so check the reference and material rather than assuming every XXL shares the steel watch’s exact specification.

How big is it, and how does it wear?

The headline measurement is 49.2 mm across, with a 24 mm lug width. Omega lists those dimensions for the white-gold reference; the OmegaForums guide reports the same case diameter and lug width for the family, plus a 12.5 mm thickness. That relatively modest thickness and the guide’s observation of short lugs can make the watch sit less tall than its diameter suggests, but they do not make it small or guarantee a comfortable fit.

Wrist shape, lug-to-lug span and personal taste matter alongside wrist circumference. Time+Tide’s reviewer described the watch as imposing even while discussing his own fit on a 7.25-inch wrist. Treat that as one person’s impression, not a sizing rule. If possible, try the exact watch on and view it from the side as well as straight on; its broad dial makes a strong visual statement.

Movement and specifications

Omega lists calibre 2211 in the white-gold reference. Its official page describes it as manual winding, chronometer-certified, with a 53-hour power reserve. The OmegaForums guide says the XXL family used calibres 2201 and 2211 based on ETA 6498-1, and gives both a 21,600-vph rate, small seconds, no date, no hacking and a 53-hour reserve. It describes the 2211 as having a gunmetal-grey finish. Those family-level details should not be treated as an official specification sheet for every reference.

For the limited-edition 231.53.49.10.04.001, Omega lists an alligator leather strap, 150 m water resistance and production limited to 88 pieces. These are specifications for that white-gold reference, not an assurance that a steel or other variant has the same strap or production details. A stated water-resistance rating is not a reason to expose an older used watch to water without checking its seals and service condition.

What it is like to own

Manual winding suits the watch’s deliberately traditional character, but it is a different daily routine from wearing an automatic: the owner winds it by hand. The large dial and small seconds make the display easy to read at a glance, while the display back lets you see the movement. The size is a clear advantage if you want a watch that dominates the wrist; it is a drawback if you want a discreet, versatile fit.

The 24 mm lug width offers a practical strap option, including replacement straps, but confirm the exact fit and buckle compatibility before ordering. Check whether a strap on a pre-owned example is original or a replacement, especially if that affects the completeness or value you expect from the listing.

What to check before buying a used Aqua Terra XXL

Because the model is discontinued, buyers will generally be comparing pre-owned examples. Condition is individual: the OmegaForums guide cautions that older watches may be due for service, but that does not establish the state of any particular watch.

  1. Confirm the reference and materials. Match the reference number, case metal and dial to the listing and documentation. Do not confuse the steel 231.13.49.10.06.001 with the white-gold 231.53.49.10.04.001 or another variant.
  2. Ask for service documentation. Establish what work was done and when. If records are absent or unclear, factor in an assessment by a qualified watchmaker rather than assuming the watch is ready for regular use.
  3. Have condition assessed. Ask a qualified watchmaker to inspect operation and case condition. For a watch intended for water exposure, have its present sealing condition checked; the original rating alone cannot establish its current water resistance.
  4. Check the package and seller. Clarify whether the strap is original or replacement, what documentation and accessories are included, and what recourse the seller offers if the watch is not as described.
  5. Judge the asking price against current evidence. Compare like-for-like references, materials, condition and service history, and use current completed sales where available. Historical price comments are not a current valuation, and current prices and listings are not established here.

Verdict: who should consider it?

The Aqua Terra XXL makes sense for someone specifically drawn to a very large, hand-wound Omega with a textured grey dial and small seconds. Its short-lug, relatively slim profile may temper the visual scale, but the 49.2 mm diameter remains the central fit decision. For a used example, reference accuracy and a credible condition and service assessment matter more than relying on the watch’s original specification alone.
