Fratello Watches dates the collection to 1947–1956 and lists references 2606, 2471, 2473, 2485, 2486, and 3944. The watches share a recognizable calendar layout, but vary in case shape, size, material, and dial details—so identify the reference before applying any specification to an individual watch.
What is the Omega Cosmic Moonphase?
It is a vintage Omega wristwatch combining a full calendar and moonphase. In the typical layout, day and month appear in windows near 12 o’clock, a central pointer hand indicates the date on an outer scale, and the display at 6 o’clock combines moonphase with small seconds. Dial colors, hands, indexes, and luminous material vary among examples.
This model family should not be confused with the later cushion-case Seamaster Cosmic or Cosmic 2000 lines. The Cosmic Moonphase name refers here to the earlier triple-calendar watches.
When was it made, and which references are known?
Balazs Ferenczi’s 2018 Fratello Watches account dates the collection from 1947 through 1956 and names references 2606, 2471, 2473, 2485, 2486, and 3944. That is a researched overview, not a complete factory reference ledger. Ferenczi writes, “The Cosmic collection was introduced in 1947 and Omega had it in production until 1956.” Read the Fratello Watches history.

The family includes smaller round cases, larger round models, and a square-cased 3944. Fratello describes the smaller round watches as roughly 34–35 mm and the 2485 and 2486 as 37.5 mm. Those figures are family descriptions; they should not replace measuring or verifying a specific example.
How do references 2471 and 2486 differ?
Both belong to the Cosmic Moonphase family, but the main documented distinction is case scale: Fratello describes the 2471 among the smaller round versions, around 34–35 mm, and the 2486 among the larger models, at 37.5 mm. The exact material, dial, and configuration should be checked on the individual watch rather than inferred from the reference alone.

Other references illustrate why the family should not be reduced to one size or material. A Kaplans Auktioner cataloged reference OT 3944 in 18K gold with a square 33 × 33 mm case (44 mm including the stated additional dimension), caliber 381, manual winding, and German month indication. The catalog records a production date of December 21, 1951 and delivery to Switzerland. These are details for that cataloged watch, not every 3944. See the Kaplans Auktioner listing.
A Cannes Auction catalog describes a circa-1950 reference 2473 in 14K yellow gold, measuring 34 mm, with caliber 381 and the family’s pointer-date, day-and-month windows, and moonphase/small-seconds display. Its white dial is explicitly described as restored. See the Cannes Auction catalog entry.

What movement does the Cosmic Moonphase use?
Fratello identifies caliber 381 as the movement used in the Cosmic Moonphase and says it was previously called 27 DL (PC AM), with the caliber designation adopted around 1948 or 1949. In that account, DL refers to triple date and moonphase, PC to shock absorber, and AM to antimagnetic. The article credits Lémania with developing the movement.
- Reported caliber: 381, formerly 27 DL (PC AM)
- Reported jewels: 17
- Reported frequency: 18,000 vibrations per hour
- Reported movement diameter: 27 mm
- Reported movement thickness: 5.25 mm
These technical specifications are reported in Fratello’s account; an official Omega technical sheet was not established here. The Kaplans OT 3944 catalog entry independently identifies caliber 381 in a specific Cosmic example.

How can you tell if a Cosmic Moonphase dial is original?
A photograph or reference number alone cannot establish dial originality. Fratello notes that aged dials and redials appear among these watches and that recognizing an original dial takes practice. The Cannes catalog’s 2473 is a documented example of a restored dial, which is not the same condition claim as an untouched original.
When assessing a particular watch, compare its dial and hands with reliable documentation for the same reference and configuration. Ask whether the dial has been restored or refinished, and seek clear photographs and a written condition description. Treat a seller’s originality claim as a claim to verify, not as proof. The cited sources do not provide a complete authentication checklist or establish the originality of any watch currently for sale.

What should you compare before choosing an example?
Because the family varies, compare the watch itself rather than relying on the broad model name. Useful points to verify include:
- Reference and case: Confirm the reference and whether the case is round or square; measure the actual watch.
- Material and condition: Establish whether the case is steel, gold-filled, gold-capped, or solid gold, and distinguish wear or polishing from the original finish.
- Dial and calendar: Check dial condition and any restoration, along with day/month language, hands, markers, date track, and moonphase display.
- Movement: Confirm the caliber and request service documentation where available.
- Provenance: Treat cataloged production or delivery details as evidence for that example, not as a general specification for its reference.
What is established about production numbers and value?
Fratello mentions an estimate of roughly 50,000 watches but attributes it to unnamed sources, so it should not be treated as a confirmed Omega production figure. The cited material also does not establish a current market-price range or current inventory. Condition, originality, reference, material, and documentation matter when comparing individual watches, but these sources do not support a numerical valuation.
