The Rolex GMT-Master reference 16750 is a transitional model: it kept much of the 1675’s familiar look while introducing caliber 3075 and a quick-set date. Some early 16750 watches have a matte black dial; later examples have glossy dials with white-gold surrounds. “Matte dial” describes one variant, not every watch in the reference.
What makes the GMT-Master 16750 a transitional reference?
The 16750 succeeded the GMT-Master 1675. Phillips dates its debut to 1980 and its discontinuation to 1988, when the 16760 followed; Hodinkee gives the same year range. It is clearest to use those endpoint years rather than imply a more exact elapsed production duration. Hodinkee also characterizes it as the first new steel GMT-Master reference in roughly two decades.
The transitional label reflects a combination of old and new: the 16750 retained the established GMT-Master design while adding a new movement and date-setting function. Its run also included different dial styles. These are descriptions from specialist and auction sources, not a manufacturer production ledger. Phillips and Hodinkee provide the reference history and feature details.
How does the matte dial differ from the later dial?
Early 16750 examples retained a matte black dial associated with the preceding 1675. Later examples used glossy black dials with white-gold surrounds around the indexes. Phillips says most examples had the glossy configuration, while Hodinkee describes the shift from early matte dials to glossy lacquer dials.

Dial type must be checked on the individual watch. A reference number alone does not establish whether a particular example has a matte or glossy dial, or whether its dial is original to the watch. The descriptions in the Phillips catalogue and Hodinkee’s reference guide describe variants, not a guarantee about any one watch.
What changed mechanically?
Caliber 3075 and quick-set date
The 16750 introduced caliber 3075, which added a quick-set date. Phillips gives the movement’s frequency as 28,800 beats per hour, compared with 19,800 beats per hour for the preceding movement in its catalogue description. Hodinkee also notes that, relative to the 1675, the 24-hour hand moved above the hour hand in the hand stack. See the Phillips listing and Hodinkee’s guide.
It is not a GMT-Master II
The 16750’s GMT hand is linked to local time; the bezel is used to read another time zone. It does not have the independently adjustable local-hour hand associated with the GMT-Master II. The distinction matters when comparing the two families: the GMT-Master II allows separate adjustment of its hour and GMT hands, according to the Vintage Rolex Field Manual; Hodinkee discusses the 16750 hand-stack change.
What specifications and details apply to a particular example?
Phillips states that the 16750’s historical water-resistance rating rose from 50 meters on the earlier reference to 100 meters. That is a model-era specification, not evidence of a vintage watch’s present water resistance. The catalogue does not establish the current condition of an individual watch’s seals or provide a pressure-test result.

Other details need the same care. Phillips describes one catalogued example as having a 40 mm case and a Jubilee bracelet, and records a guarantee, product literature, presentation box, and outer packaging. Those are details of that lot only; they should not be assumed for every 16750. The Phillips catalogue entry is the source for that specific example.

The historical descriptions establish reference features, but they do not authenticate an individual watch or establish its current market value. For a specific 16750, have a qualified watch professional assess the dial’s type and originality, the watch’s condition and service documentation, and the case and bracelet. Review papers, accessories, and provenance as evidence for that individual example rather than as standard contents of the reference.
A Sotheby’s catalogue also documents a GMT-Master “Pepsi” reference 16750, but an auction listing is evidence about its own watch, not a universal specification or a current price guide: Sotheby’s lot page.
