The Omega Speedmaster ST 376.0822 is a 1987 automatic Speedmaster powered by caliber 1045, with day-date displays and a 24-hour indicator in addition to its chronograph. Collectors call it the “Holy Grail,” a nickname associated with Chuck Maddox’s long search for the watch—not an official Omega name or a claim that this model was the NASA-qualified, hand-wound Moonwatch.
What makes the 376.0822 unusual?
Omega identifies the ST 376.0822 as the first Speedmaster to combine an automatic movement with a Moonwatch case. Its caliber 1045 is derived from Lemania’s 5100 architecture. The movement’s additional functions and layout contribute to a thicker, asymmetric case, with the crown and chronograph pushers integrated closely into the case.
The watch brings together a Moonwatch-style case and an automatic movement with a day-date display, a 24-hour indicator, and chronograph registers. That combination, along with its short production period, helps explain its collector following. Production is generally described as spanning 1987–1988.
What are the specifications—and why do published sizes differ?
| Specification | Published detail |
|---|---|
| Reference and year | ST 376.0822; 1987, according to Omega’s official model history |
| Movement | Automatic caliber 1045 |
| Case material and crystal | Stainless steel; Hesalite, according to Omega |
| Dial | Black with tritium luminous material, according to Omega |
| Bracelet | Omega lists 1450/809; period examples and datasheets also document 1450/808 |
| Diameter | 40 mm on Omega’s model page; 42 mm in the cited 2019 Sotheby’s and 2020 Antiquorum lot descriptions |
The available published sources do not resolve the 40 mm versus 42 mm discrepancy or establish that it is simply a difference in measurement convention. If case size matters to you, ask how the seller measured the specific watch and verify it directly.

How many were made?
The detailed account in Moonwatch Only, published circa 2018, concludes that 2,000 watches were produced in 1987–1988: 1,800 stainless-steel examples and a numbered 200-piece steel-and-gold version. Its accounting is based on serial and delivery records and describes two serial-number blocks. The gold-accented version is included in that 2,000, not additional to it; the study describes it as intended for Italy.
The total is not universally agreed. Antiquorum’s March 2020 catalogue states that about 1,000 examples were made, comprising approximately 800 steel and 200 steel-and-gold watches. Sotheby’s July 2019 catalogue also gives a total of 2,000, without the same material breakdown. The 2,000-piece figure is the conclusion of the more detailed cited study, but the conflicting Antiquorum count should be kept in view rather than presented as settled fact.

How to assess whether an example is period-correct
Check components together rather than using one detail as a pass-or-fail authenticity test. The specialist study documents period variations and later service parts, and cautions that misidentification can lead to original components being replaced unnecessarily.
Bezel
In a sample of 58 dated watches, Moonwatch Only observed B2 bezels on examples produced through February 9, 1988, and B4 bezels on later production. One visible distinction is the numeral “7”: B2 has a serif, while B4 does not. These are observations about period production, not a standalone authentication rule.

Dial
The study identifies one original dial for the steel model and distinguishes it from a later luminous service dial and some Mark 4.5 replacement dials. Details it highlights include the minute scale on the glass ring rather than the dial, and a small “10” beneath the two-o’clock index. Compare the dial with specialist reference images where possible; one changed component does not by itself prove the whole watch is counterfeit.
Hands
The original configuration described by the study has seven all-white hands, including a distinctive airplane-shaped chronograph minute hand. Replacement hands are also documented. A replaced set affects originality and may affect value, but it is not, on its own, evidence that the entire watch is fake.

Bracelet and end links
Omega’s early case datasheet lists bracelet 1450 with solid 808 end links; an updated datasheet changes the end-link reference to 809. The specialist study observes both 808 and 809 on watches, so neither should be treated as the sole possible original configuration. Sotheby’s documented a particular example with a 1450 bracelet and 808 end links.
Case, movement, and records
Ask for clear photographs of the movement, case, and serial numbers, along with any service records and archive extract. An extract can document production and delivery details for an individual watch: Sotheby’s, for example, reported that its 1988 lot was produced on September 8, 1988 and delivered to Singapore. Such paperwork is useful provenance, not a substitute for matching the physical watch to its records and assessing its condition.

What to check before buying or servicing one
- Compare the components. Assess the bezel, dial, hands, and bracelet/end links against specialist reference material, noting any service or replacement parts.
- Inspect condition. Have the case checked for polishing, damage, and other condition issues; request a movement assessment and available service documentation.
- Verify the records. Compare serial and case details with any archive extract or provenance documents rather than relying on paperwork alone.
- Confirm the dimensions. Because published diameter figures differ, establish the measurement method for the specific example.
- Compare like with like. Consider originality, condition, service history, provenance, and included box or papers when comparing examples. Base a purchase decision on comparable completed sales, not a historic estimate alone.
For an inspection or service, look for a watchmaker experienced with vintage Omega chronographs and caliber 1045. Discuss preservation of original parts before authorizing replacements.
What do the old auction records tell you about value?
The available auction figures are historical records for individual watches, not a current market valuation. Sotheby’s listed an estimate of USD 12,000–18,000 for its July 2019 lot. Antiquorum estimated CHF 14,000–18,000 for its March 2020 lot and reported a sale at CHF 20,000. The watches, condition descriptions, currencies, and sale contexts differ; these figures should not be averaged or treated as an October 2026 price.
Condition can vary substantially. Antiquorum described its example as having service hands and a movement for which an overhaul was recommended. That describes that lot only, not the condition of other 376.0822 watches.
Why is it called the “Holy Grail”?
The nickname is collector language associated with Chuck Maddox’s prolonged search for the reference. Omega’s official 1987 Speedmaster history page calls it hard to find and says: “The Holy Grail remains extremely hard to find and even OMEGA’s own museum is constantly on the hunt for original pieces.” The phrase reflects scarcity and collector interest; it does not make the model a Moonwatch flight-qualified watch.
