The familiar Professional Moonwatch has a tachymeter bezel, but Speedmasters have also used steel bezels and specialist scales; modern models add ceramic, colored aluminum and diamond-set designs. Those differences matter both for identifying a model and for judging whether a vintage bezel is original to its watch.
What distinguishes one Speedmaster bezel from another?
Compare four things together: the bezel’s material and finish, the scale it carries, the placement and form of its dots and lettering, and the reference and production period of the watch. A black tachymeter bezel may look like a generic Speedmaster feature, but the family includes multiple configurations, and parts that look similar are not necessarily interchangeable.
- Material and finish: steel, aluminum, ceramic, precious-metal accents or diamond-set treatments.
- Scale: tachymeter is the best-known Moonwatch choice, while historical Speedmasters also used telemeter, pulsations and decimal scales.
- Layout: dot positions, numerals, letterforms and scale printing can distinguish versions.
- Reference and period: correctness for a vintage watch depends on its specific model and production history.
What does DON mean on a Moonwatch bezel?
DON means “Dot Over Ninety”: the dot sits above the 90 marking on the tachymeter scale. It describes a particular dot placement, not a different measurement scale. OMEGA’s March 5, 2024 announcement of the white-dial Moonwatch specifies a black anodized aluminum tachymeter bezel with DON. See OMEGA’s white-dial Moonwatch announcement. Fratello’s historical guide says DON returned to regular Moonwatch models with the 2021 generation, while cautioning that later replacement bezels can differ subtly from vintage originals.
How have Speedmaster bezel materials changed?
The earliest Speedmasters, including the CK2915, used steel bezel iterations before black aluminum inlays appeared. Fratello’s specialist guide groups vintage design into broad periods—pre-1970, approximately 1970 to the mid-1990s, and the mid-1990s to 2020—but this is an editorial overview, not an official parts catalogue. The material alone cannot establish whether a bezel is correct for a particular watch.

Modern examples show how much the material palette varies across Speedmaster families. OMEGA’s August 25, 2026 announcement describes seven new Speedmaster 38 mm references, including black or warm-grey aluminum, blue ceramic with a white enamel scale, green and brown aluminum bezel rings in bicolour configurations, and diamond-set bezels. The diamond-set 38 mm variants have 52 diamonds totaling 1.53 carats. These are specifications for the announced 38 mm versions, not a description of every Speedmaster. OMEGA’s announcement is at OMEGA Speedmaster 38 mm new models.
Ceramic is not limited to the 38 mm line. Swatch Group’s 2013 announcement for the Dark Side of the Moon describes a polished ceramic bezel with a matt chromium nitride tachymeter scale. That example belongs to a different Speedmaster subfamily; it should not be treated as a standard Professional Moonwatch bezel. See Swatch Group’s Dark Side of the Moon announcement.

Which scales can appear on Speedmaster bezels?
A tachymeter scale is associated with the Moonwatch, but it is not the only scale used across Speedmaster history. Specialist historical examples include:
- Telemeter: a scale used to estimate distance from a visible event and the arrival of its sound.
- Pulsations: a scale designed to help read pulse rate from a timed count.
- Decimal: a scale that expresses elapsed time in decimal form.
These are distinct bezel configurations, not interchangeable labels for a tachymeter. Fratello’s Speedmaster bezel guide discusses the historical variety.

What details help identify a vintage bezel?
For vintage watches, inspect the complete printing and layout rather than relying on a single feature such as DON. Fratello’s guide points to the lettering, scale arrangement, accent in “TACHYMÈTRE,” dot placement and numeral forms. It notes, for example, differences in dot positions near 200 and 225 and in the shape of the letter E between certain originals and modern replacements. These are clues to compare against the exact reference and period, not a standalone authentication test.
The guide also records a rare “220” misprint bezel on some 1970 Speedmaster Professional reference 145.022-69 watches. That is a specific collector detail, not a routine bezel category or a reason to assume any bezel with an unusual marking is correct.

How should you check a bezel before buying or replacing one?
- Establish the exact watch reference and production period. Do not begin with a generic search for a “Speedmaster bezel”; different families and generations may use different parts.
- Compare the scale, material and printing. Check the scale type, lettering, numerals and dot locations against reference-specific information.
- Ask about service and replacement history. A later service part may be visually close to an original but not period-correct.
- Get specialist help when originality affects value. For a valuable vintage watch, have an experienced Omega specialist assess the bezel alongside the watch’s condition, service history and provenance.
