Omega Speedmaster Chronograph Not Resetting to Zero: Causes and Fixes

If a Speedmaster chronograph hand will not return to zero after you stop the chronograph and press reset, the fault is internal. Here is the correct reset sequence, what to check first, what a watchmaker inspects, and how warranty terms affect where you have it repaired.

If your Speedmaster’s chronograph hands do not return to zero when you press reset, first make sure the chronograph is fully stopped, then press reset gently. If the hands still stop short of 12 o’clock, the fault is internal and needs a watchmaker. Omega’s owner manual gives no owner procedure for recalibrating the hands, and it warns against forcing the reset pusher.

Confirm the reset sequence first

Most reports of a chronograph that “won’t reset” turn out to be a sequencing problem. The reset function on the reference covered here works only when the chronograph is stopped. The owner manual for reference 310.32.42.50.04.001 states: “Press the pusher to reset the chronograph hands to zero. Resetting can only be done when the chronograph is stopped.” It also carries a warning: “do not force the reset pusher when the chronograph is running.”

  1. Stop the chronograph. Press the start/stop pusher (the upper pusher on the Speedmaster Moonwatch layout) once. The chronograph seconds hand should freeze.
  2. Press the reset pusher (lower pusher) once, firmly but without force. The chronograph seconds hand, minute counter and hour counter should all snap back to 12 o’clock and the zero position.
  3. Check the result. If every hand returns to zero, the problem was sequencing. Nothing further is needed.
  4. If one or more hands stop short of zero, do not press reset again repeatedly. Repeated presses on a stuck or misaligned mechanism can make the problem worse. Stop here and move to the inspection steps below.

Read the symptom before you contact a service centre

Note these details before you book a service. They help a watchmaker decide where to look, but they do not, on their own, prove which part has failed.

  • Which hand or counter is off. A chronograph seconds hand that stops a few seconds short is a different symptom from a minute counter that stalls at a different position.
  • Whether the offset repeats. A hand that stops at the same spot each time points to a consistent positioning or mechanical issue. A random offset may point to an intermittent contact or a loose component.
  • How the pusher feels. Note whether it feels stiff, gritty, unusually loose, or does not return fully after pressing.
  • Recent events. A knock, a drop, a magnet near the watch, or any service done by someone else is worth reporting, even if you are unsure it is related.

What not to do at home

An off-zero hand tempts owners to fix it on the spot. Omega’s owner guidance does not support that approach. Avoid the following:

Omega
  • Model 310.30.42.50.01.002
  • Bending or moving a hand by hand, which can damage the hand, its seating, or the dial.
  • Opening the case, adjusting screws, or lubricating the movement. The manual gives no owner procedure for any of these.
  • Repeatedly pressing the reset pusher while the chronograph is running or while a pusher feels stuck.
  • Buying a generic watch tool kit or demagnetizer and treating it as a fix. Nothing in the owner manual or Omega’s workshop material supports that route for this symptom.

What a watchmaker will check

Omega publishes workshop material for specific calibres, and the checks differ by movement. The two Omega technical documents on this topic are for calibre 3301 and calibre 3220. They are not owner instructions, and their procedures should not be assumed to apply to every Speedmaster. Depending on the exact calibre and examination, a professional may look at:

  • Calibre 3301: the minute counter’s return to zero and the position of the chronograph finger, which is the part that drives the counter.
  • Calibre 3220: inspection and adjustment of the reset hammer, the component that engages the chronograph mechanism when you press reset.
  • Related areas that can affect where hands sit: hand seating, the contact between the reset hammer and the heart cam, and counter positioning.

These are categories of plausible causes drawn from Omega’s workshop procedures. They are not a remote diagnosis of your watch. Inspection is what separates a hand-positioning issue from a counter or reset mechanism problem, and only the second typically needs movement work.

Service and warranty before you authorize work

Omega says its authorized service centres and boutiques have the equipment needed for maintenance and that they work to Omega’s quality standards. Its manual gives a general service interval of five to eight years, depending on use, climate and care. That is routine guidance, not a reason to wait on a current chronograph fault.

The warranty terms are the second thing to check. For watches purchased on or after 1 July 2018, the manual states a sixty-month international warranty, subject to conditions including a correctly completed warranty certificate. It covers material and manufacturing defects that existed at purchase and excludes, among other things, damage from incorrect use and work performed by non-authorized persons. Five years from purchase means that any watch bought before about October 2021 is now outside the stated period. Local consumer law may provide additional rights, so check those for your own purchase.

Repair route What Omega’s guidance says Warranty implication
Omega-authorized service centre or boutique Equipment and procedures meet Omega’s quality standards Work is covered by the manual’s warranty conditions, where they apply
Independent chronograph watchmaker Not addressed in Omega’s manual; confirm calibre-specific experience yourself Non-authorized repair is one of the exclusions named in the manual; confirm the effect on your warranty before work starts

What to give the service centre

  • The model and reference number (310.32.42.50.04.001) and the movement calibre, if you know it.
  • The purchase date and warranty certificate.
  • Your service history, including any work by others.
  • Which hands miss zero, whether the offset is consistent, and how the pusher feels.
  • Any recent knock, drop or repair.

Ask for a written diagnosis and estimate before approving any work. Ask also whether the service includes a water-resistance check if the case is opened. Omega’s manual recommends annual water-resistance testing by an authorized centre for this reference and advises against operating the chronograph pushers underwater.

Figures from Omega’s own documents

  • Five to eight years: general service interval from Omega’s owner manual, dependent on use, model, climate and care. The manual does not state a year of publication.
  • Sixty months: warranty period for watches purchased on or after 1 July 2018, subject to the manual’s conditions.

These are manufacturer guidance figures. They are not statistics about how often Speedmasters develop reset faults, and no reliable independent figure on that question was identified.
