The OMEGA Speedmaster Co-Axial Chronograph reference 311.30.44.51.01.002 is a large, automatic Speedmaster with a date and an unusual two-register chronograph display. Robert-Jan Broer named it his personal favorite of 2011 after reviewing it for Fratello in 2012. It borrows Speedmaster design cues, but it is not the Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch.

Which Speedmaster does the review cover?

The exact model is the stainless-steel, black-dial Speedmaster Co-Axial Chronograph, reference 311.30.44.51.01.002, with a steel bracelet and tachymeter bezel. OMEGA’s Hong Kong product page identifies the reference and marks it as no longer available through that page. That status describes OMEGA’s official page, not the availability of pre-owned examples elsewhere.

The watch was introduced at BaselWorld in 2011; Broer’s review was published on 1 February 2012. His phrase “My Personal Favorite Of 2011” refers to his own preference, not a formal award or a claim that it was the year’s most popular watch. Read Broer’s Fratello review.

How the 9300 chronograph display works

Calibre 9300 is an automatic chronograph movement. Rather than giving the chronograph separate minute and hour subdials, the dial places both elapsed-time scales in the counter at three o’clock: one hand tracks minutes and the other tracks hours. Central chronograph seconds make elapsed seconds easy to read at a glance. The small-seconds subdial sits at nine, and the date appears at six.

This arrangement keeps the dial to two subdials while retaining a 12-hour chronograph. Broer liked the layout and reported that the dial was legible. Those are his observations of the review sample, not a universal finding for every wearer or lighting condition.

What it is like to wear—and what to consider

At 44.25 mm across and 15.6 mm thick, this is a substantial watch. Broer said the review sample wore more comfortably than he expected from its diameter. Wrist shape, preferred fit and tolerance for thickness vary, so that experience is best taken as one reviewer’s impression rather than a fit guarantee. The 21 mm lug width is also worth checking when considering strap options.

Broer praised the chronograph pushers’ feel and the movement finishing visible through the sapphire caseback. He also found the combined counter useful. The clearest drawback he identified was the date-setting process: there is no quick-set date. Instead, the independently adjustable hour hand advances the date, which can be less convenient when the watch has stopped or the calendar needs correcting.

Is the calibre 9300 Speedmaster a Moonwatch?

No. “Moonwatch” commonly refers to the Speedmaster Professional, a distinct model family. This reference is a Speedmaster Co-Axial Chronograph with an automatic calibre 9300, a date, and a 44.25 mm case. Similar design language does not make the two watches interchangeable: their movements, layouts and intended propositions differ.

Availability and buying checks

OMEGA’s Hong Kong page says reference 311.30.44.51.01.002 is no longer available there. It does not establish whether another retailer or the secondary market currently has one, nor does it verify condition, completeness, authenticity or price. The review’s 2012 retail price is historical and should not be used as a present-day valuation.

If evaluating a listing, first confirm the full reference rather than relying on “Speedmaster 9300” alone. Then assess the specific watch’s condition, service documentation, bracelet and accessories, and seller evidence. For comparisons with another chronograph, focus on case dimensions and fit, automatic versus hand-wound operation, date-setting convenience, counter readability, movement visibility, water resistance and the exact reference being offered.
