The design combines familiar Speedmaster cues with a larger ceramic case, automatic winding, a date, and sapphire crystals. Its two-register chronograph layout places the date at six. That makes it a different proposition from the traditional Speedmaster Professional format: Broer characterized it as appealing to buyers who want the design language with a larger diameter, self-winding operation, and date. That was his assessment of the likely audience, not an Omega-defined market category.
Why is it called “Vintage Black”?
The “vintage” effect is deliberate. Brown accents and vintage-colored Super-LumiNova on the dial, hands, and date display create a faux-patina appearance against the black ceramic. Jackroad’s listing also describes brown Super-LumiNova on the indices, hands, and tachymeter scale. These are modern materials and styling choices, not evidence of naturally aged lume or other vintage components.

The treatment is a matter of taste. In his review, Fratello’s Robert-Jan Broer praised the look but said he personally preferred the brighter original Dark Side of the Moon appearance to the Vintage Black’s faux patina.

Caliber 9300 is the movement associated with this discontinued reference in the cited review and auction catalog. Do not transfer specifications from the 2025 Dark Side of the Moon generation to this watch: Hodinkee reports caliber 9900 for the standard automatic version in that newer generation. Hodinkee’s 2025 coverage concerns different references.

How does it wear?
The 44.25 mm case is a substantial part of the watch’s identity, so buyers should consider how that size suits their wrist and preferred fit rather than assuming the Moonwatch name means traditional Speedmaster proportions. The cited sources do not provide a comparative wear test against other models.
Broer’s September 29, 2015 review was based on a watch Omega supplied for review. He wrote, “The strap does feel very comfortable and doesn’t need any break-in period.” He also found the padding near the lugs a bit heavy and noted that some folding buckles can feel thick underneath the wrist. Those are one reviewer’s impressions of the example he wore, not a consensus or a controlled test.

Is the Vintage Black worth buying?
It may suit a buyer looking for a large black-ceramic Speedmaster with an automatic chronograph, date, and deliberately aged-looking accents. Its appeal is less obvious if you prefer the brighter original Dark Side of the Moon styling, the proportions or format of a traditional Speedmaster Professional, or a watch without a date. The right choice is personal; the available sources do not offer a balanced head-to-head test against other models.
For a pre-owned example, assess the individual watch rather than relying on the model’s reputation or an old sale figure. Check:

- Service history and whether the seller can document recent work. The fact that one auction watch needed service does not establish the condition of another example.
- Whether box and papers are included, and whether the reference and documentation correspond to the watch being offered.
- Seller reputation, return terms, and the rules and protections applicable in your region.
- The asking price in its currency and market, compared with current, genuinely comparable offers—not just a historical retail figure or one auction result.
What do the historical price records show?
They show past prices for particular records, not today’s fair value. Jackroad’s page identifies this reference as sold out and says its displayed ¥1,550,000 price was the price at the time of last sale; it also lists a ¥2,035,000 suggested retail price. Those are page-specific historical figures, not current offers. Jackroad’s listing does not establish present inventory or market value.
Christie’s records one example sold on July 21, 2020 for CHF 7,500, against an estimate of CHF 5,000–7,000. The catalog says estimates exclude buyer’s premium and applicable taxes. It also states that the movement accuracy of that particular watch was not tested and recommends service. One dated auction result cannot serve as a current valuation benchmark or a condition guarantee for another watch.

The 2025 refresh is a separate generation; Hodinkee identifies caliber 9900 in its coverage of the standard automatic version. If you are comparing listings, verify the reference number rather than relying on “Dark Side of the Moon” alone.
