Omega Olympic Timekeeping: From 1932 Stopwatches to Rio 2016

Omega began Olympic timekeeping with 30 stopwatches at Los Angeles 1932. By Rio 2016, a high-speed camera officially determined race winners, alongside systems for photocells, false starts and scoring.

Omega’s Olympic timekeeping began at Los Angeles 1932 with 30 stopwatches. By Rio 2016, a high-speed finish-line camera was producing images that officially determined race winners. The change was not simply from one clock to another: it brought recorded visual evidence and event-specific sensing into a broader system for timing, scoring and detecting false starts.

How did Omega begin timing the Olympics?

Omega says it was selected as Official Timekeeper for the Los Angeles 1932 Olympic Games, where 30 stopwatches were used to time every event. Omega’s 2021 account describes the appointment as the start of its Olympic Official Timekeeper role; the company’s 2026 aquatics retrospective also calls 1932 the first time one company had been given that role.

At that starting point, a close finish could depend on an operator reading a chronograph and judging what they saw. Omega’s historical account describes the later development of photofinish cameras and finer time measurement, but it does not provide a dated sequence for each intermediate step.

What changed between stopwatch timing and Rio 2016?

Stage Method described by the source What the evidence establishes
Los Angeles 1932 30 stopwatches Omega says they were used to time every event.
Rio 2016 Scan’O’Vision MYRIA finish-line camera The IOC’s 2016 technology guide says it captured 10,000 images per second and that its images officially determined race champions.

The contrast is between stopwatch readings and a camera record that could be examined at the finish. The IOC’s description makes the camera’s role explicit: its images were not merely supplementary footage; they were used officially to determine race winners. The sources do not quantify accuracy gains across the intervening decades, so the comparison is about the documented methods, not a numerical claim about how much more accurate one era was.

What other timing and scoring systems were used at Rio?

The IOC guide presents Olympic timekeeping as more than finish-line photography. For Rio 2016, it also describes several event and venue systems:

  • Photocells: improved photocells were among the timing technologies described for the Games.
  • False starts: an enhanced detection system combined software, sensors and communications.
  • Archery: a new scoring system used built-in scanning.
  • Displays: the guide also mentions improved stadium and golf scoreboards.

Together, these examples show a wider role for the timekeeper: providing timing and scoring infrastructure for different sports, supporting the detection of a false start, and communicating results to spectators.

What does Omega’s Olympic record through Rio mean?

In 2016, the IOC described Omega’s relationship with the Games as spanning 84 years and 27 Olympic Games. That is the IOC’s count through Rio, not evidence that Omega timed every edition held during that period. It is a measure of the long-running relationship, rather than a complete edition-by-edition record of Omega’s participation.

Why does Olympic timekeeping matter beyond the clock?

Results determine placings, medals and records, so the way they are established has consequences beyond the technical equipment. In OMEGA’s 2021 article, International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach put that institutional role plainly: “The Olympic Games is about sports, and sports is about results. Without OMEGA, there are no results.” The statement reflects the importance of the result-making function; it is not a technical comparison of timekeeping systems.

Is there a complete timeline of Omega’s Olympic timing innovations?

The available dated milestones establish the 1932 stopwatch-based beginning and specific technologies used at Rio 2016. Omega’s historical account describes the general move from a chronograph and human judgment toward photofinish cameras and finer measurement, but the cited material does not support a reliable Games-by-Games chronology of when each innovation first appeared. In particular, Rio’s improved photocells, false-start system and archery scanning system should not be described as inventions first introduced at those Games unless a dated source establishes that.
