The Omega Speedmaster Professional 145.012 is the final Speedmaster reference associated with the manual-winding caliber 321 before the successor 145.022 introduced caliber 861. Usually dated to 1967–68, it is closely tied to the Apollo era—but “Pre-Moon” is a collector label, not proof that this was the watch worn by Buzz Aldrin on the lunar surface.
What is an Omega Speedmaster 145.012?
The 145.012 is a vintage Speedmaster Professional reference made during the transition from the earlier 105.012 to the later 145.022. It is notable for retaining caliber 321, the column-wheel chronograph movement, and for being the last Speedmaster reference associated with that caliber. Fratello estimates production at approximately 27,000–28,000 units; that is a collector-guide estimate, not an Omega-confirmed count. Fratello’s 145.012 buyer guide
The reference is generally associated with production in 1967 and 1968, and examples may have been delivered in 1969. Production year and delivery year are not interchangeable, so a date inferred from the reference or a seller’s description should not substitute for checking the individual watch’s records. The archive lists 145.012-67 and 145.012-68 subreferences. Fratello and Hodinkee’s reference guide
Is the 145.012 a Moonwatch?
It belongs to the Speedmaster generation associated with NASA’s Apollo-era use, and Michael Collins wore a 145.012 on Apollo 11. But the cited reference guide identifies Buzz Aldrin’s 105.012 as the watch worn on the lunar surface. Calling the 145.012 “Pre-Moon” describes its place in the vintage Speedmaster lineage; it should not be read as a claim that Aldrin wore this reference on the Moon. Fratello and Hodinkee

What movement is in the Omega 145.012?
The 145.012 is associated with Omega caliber 321, a hand-wound chronograph movement. An Omega archive extract example describes caliber 321 as having 30-minute and 12-hour recorders. This is a movement-and-reference association, not a guarantee that the movement currently inside any individual watch is original to its case; that requires inspection and documentation.
The succeeding 145.022 brought caliber 861, which replaced the 321’s column-wheel chronograph control with a cam-and-lever system. The 145.022 appeared around 1968, so its early examples overlap the period associated with the 145.012. A watch’s apparent year alone is therefore a weak way to identify its reference or movement. How can I tell a 145.012 from a 105.012 or 145.022?
The reference archive characterizes the 145.012 as a modest update to the 105.012, with pusher mounting and larger pusher caps among the visible differences. The 145.022 is distinguished principally by its association with caliber 861 rather than caliber 321. These are useful identification clues, not a stand-alone authentication test: vintage watches can have replacement or service parts, and component timelines are not perfectly sequential. Fratello and Hodinkee
| Reference | Useful distinction | Dating context |
|---|---|---|
| 105.012 | Predecessor; the 145.012 guide highlights pusher mounting and larger caps as differences. | Production overlaps the period relevant to the 145.012. |
| 145.012 | Associated with caliber 321; archive subreferences include 145.012-67 and 145.012-68. | Generally produced in 1967–68; some examples were delivered in 1969. |
| 145.022 | Successor associated with caliber 861 and a cam-and-lever chronograph control. | Introduced around 1968; early examples overlap the 145.012 period. |
Typical reference-guide features to examine include an asymmetrical case, a Dot Over 90 bezel, tritium-marked dial and hands, an applied Omega logo, and a single-step Seahorse caseback. Fratello lists the case at 42 mm in diameter, 48 mm lug-to-lug, with a 20 mm lug width. Such details can help assess consistency with the reference, but neither they nor a checklist establish that every component is original. Fratello

Fratello also notes a chronograph-seconds-hand change during 1968 and advises caution when judging dial and hand originality. Collector descriptions are guides to investigation rather than rigid pass-or-fail rules; the watch’s specific configuration and service history matter. Fratello and Hodinkee
What should I check before buying a 145.012?
- Request clear, current photographs. Ask for close views of the dial, hands, bezel, caseback, movement, serial number, and reference markings. This lets you compare the actual watch with reference-specific guidance rather than relying on a stock image or a broad “Pre-Moon” description.
- Check the movement and condition with a specialist. Have a qualified vintage Omega watchmaker inspect the movement, case, and overall condition before purchase. Visible consistency with a 145.012 is not proof that the movement or other parts are authentic, original to the watch, or mechanically sound.
- Review the documentation without treating it as authentication. An Omega Extract from the Archives can document information held in Omega’s production records, but Omega expressly says the extract does not authenticate the watch or any of its components.
- Ask about strap or bracelet fit separately. The reference archive lists a 20 mm lug width, a useful starting point when asking about straps. It does not establish that a generic strap is an original Omega bracelet or that a bracelet’s end links fit; check the actual fit and condition.
Does an Omega Extract from the Archives prove authenticity?
No. Omega’s Extract records production-archive information; it is not a certificate authenticating the watch or its components. In its February 11, 2022 extract, Omega stated that the document was prepared from information submitted by the client, without professional examination of the timepiece by the Heritage Department, and “is neither a Certificate of Authenticity nor does it, in any way, attest to the authenticity of the watch mentioned below or any of its components.” Omega Extract from the Archives

That same extract example records production on March 20, 1968. It is a date for that particular watch, not a production date for the entire reference. Omega Heritage Department extract, February 11, 2022
What is known about 145.012 prices?
A current, representative price range is not established here, so a single auction result should not be treated as a market valuation. Sotheby’s reports that a 145.012-67 sold in New York in 2022 for $11,340; that is one historical result, and condition, originality, documentation, and sale circumstances can differ between examples.
