Its historical rating is not a guarantee that a surviving watch is safe to dive with today. The evidence here documents one auctioned example, not every production variant or the present condition of every watch.
What the Seiko 6159-7001 is
Seiko dates its 300 m hi-beat diver generation to 1968. The company describes its caliber as running at 10 vibrations per second and having both automatic and manual winding. Seiko’s diver history calls it “The Diver’s 300M.”
The exact-reference details available here come from a Phillips catalogue entry for a watch dated circa 1969. Phillips lists a stainless-steel case, automatic Cal. 6159A, 25 jewels, a rubber strap, and a 44 mm diameter. Those are specifications of that catalogued example, not proof that every 6159-7001 left the factory with identical details. The lot sold for HK$56,250, a single historical auction result rather than a current asking price or a reliable estimate of today’s market. Phillips auction catalogue
What hi-beat means here
Seiko’s figure of 10 vibrations per second describes the caliber’s operating frequency. A high-beat movement can make the seconds hand appear to sweep more smoothly than a lower-frequency movement, but the frequency alone does not establish a watch’s accuracy, condition, or service needs.

Phillips’s essay on the watch prints “36,000 mph,” an apparent unit error. Seiko’s own history gives the useful specification as 10 vibrations per second; there is no reason to repeat the auction text’s erroneous unit. Seiko diver history · Phillips auction catalogue
Why the 6159 movement is associated with a 600 m diver
Seiko Museum’s account of the later 600 m diver’s development says that Cal. 6159 was used in both the 1968 300 m professional diver and the later 600 m development. That establishes a movement lineage; it does not mean the 6159-7001 itself was rated to 600 m. Seiko Museum: development of the 600 m diver

6159-7001 versus the modern SLA039
The SLA039 is a modern re-creation of the 1968 design, not a watch with the same movement or stated diving use. Seiko’s 2020 announcement specifies an 8L55 caliber and a 300 m saturation-diver rating, while saying the original was intended for air diving. Can you dive with a vintage 6159-7001?
Do not treat the original 300 m rating as evidence that an individual watch remains water-resistant. The cited sources provide no current pressure-test result for a surviving 6159-7001, including the Phillips lot. Before any water exposure, have the specific watch assessed and pressure-tested by a qualified watchmaker; without recent evidence of a successful test, keep it out of the water.

What to check when buying one
The historical record supports the model’s significance, but it cannot establish the condition or originality of a particular watch. Ask for evidence tied to the individual piece rather than assuming that its appearance or reference number guarantees performance.
- Dial and hands: Ask whether they are original, refinished, or replacement parts, and request clear photographs or documentation.
- Case: Examine wear and prior polishing, especially if retaining the original case shape matters to you.
- Movement and service: Request service records and details of work performed on the Cal. 6159A.
- Water resistance: Ask for a recent pressure-test result from a qualified watchmaker. A historical rating is not a substitute.
- Dating and price: Seek specialist documentation for serial-number dating and compare relevant, recent sales; one auction result cannot establish a typical value.
Wrist game or crying shame?
For a collector drawn to Seiko’s 1968 professional-diver lineage, the 6159-7001 has a strong historical case: Seiko’s documented hi-beat 300 m generation, a movement with a link to the later 600 m development, and a circa-1969 auction example with a notably substantial 44 mm case. The caveat is practical, not historical: condition, originality, service, and water resistance must be assessed watch by watch. Judge it as a vintage collectible, not as a ready-to-dive instrument based on its original rating alone.
