Both are discontinued, so a purchase today means assessing an individual pre-owned watch—not relying on the model name alone.

These figures apply to the two references named here, not every watch called a Speedmaster Reduced or Speedmaster Professional. “Professional” spans multiple generations; for example, the current-generation Moonwatch ref. 310.30.42.50.01.001 uses manual-winding caliber 3861 and has a 50 m water-resistance rating in Omega’s product sheet.
Which one wears smaller?
Omega lists the Reduced at 39 mm and the 3570.50.00 Professional at 42 mm. That three-millimeter difference makes the Reduced the smaller watch on paper, but diameter alone does not establish how either will fit your wrist. Try the exact watch if possible, and assess how its case and bracelet sit rather than choosing from diameter alone.
Is the Speedmaster Reduced automatic?
Yes. Omega lists the Reduced’s caliber 3220 as automatic; the Professional 3570.50.00’s caliber 1861 is manual-winding. The Reduced’s automatic movement is not simply the Professional’s movement with a rotor added.

How the Reduced movement is constructed
Specialist descriptions characterize caliber 3220 as an ETA-based automatic movement with a Dubois-Dépraz chronograph module. Hodinkee’s overview and Fratello’s comparison describe this modular construction. Fratello notes that it is associated with the chronograph pushers sitting higher than the crown. Omega’s archived specification confirms the caliber and automatic winding, but not these construction details.
How to tell them apart in a listing
Start with the reference number and movement, rather than trusting a seller’s shorthand. The Reduced’s 3510.50.00 reference is the clearest check against the Professional 3570.50.00 in this comparison. Fratello also points to dial layout: the Reduced’s subdials sit closer to the perimeter, and minute numerals appear beneath hour indices. Treat those as visual clues, not proof; confirm the exact reference and compare clear photographs of the particular watch.

Is the Reduced a Moonwatch?
The Reduced borrows the Speedmaster look, but it is not the cited Professional Moonwatch reference. Omega’s archived page for the 3570.50.00 ties the Professional to the lunar program, stating that the Speedmaster was carried on all six lunar landing projects and describing caliber 1861 as using the same mechanism as the famous hand-wound movement worn during lunar landings. That heritage statement belongs to the Professional/Moonwatch lineage; it should not be transferred to the Reduced or generalized to every Speedmaster variant.
What to check before buying either one used
Omega marks both references discontinued, so availability is a pre-owned-market question. No model name or original specification establishes the present condition of an individual watch. Compare the actual examples on:
Rank #3
- Model 310.32.42.50.01.001
- Condition and originality: Check the case, dial, hands, bezel, and bracelet, and ask whether parts have been replaced.
- Service documentation: Look for dated records and details of work performed. For a Reduced, consider an inspection by a watchmaker familiar with its modular chronograph construction.
- Operation: Have the chronograph functions and winding checked rather than assuming they work because the watch runs.
- Bracelet and fit: Inspect bracelet condition and whether the watch can be adjusted to fit you.
- Seller terms: Understand the return policy and what recourse is available if an inspection reveals a problem.
The archived water-resistance ratings—30 m for the Reduced and 50 m for the Professional—are not guarantees for an aged, untested watch. Do not infer that either is safe for water use without an appropriate current assessment. Service cost also depends on the individual watch and is not established by its reference alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which should you choose?
Choose between these references by prioritizing the trade-offs that matter to you: the Reduced is 39 mm and automatic, while the 3570.50.00 Professional is 42 mm, manual-winding, and tied to the cited Moonwatch heritage. Then compare the fit, dial and pusher appearance, condition, originality, and documentation of the specific watches available to you. A sound example with a credible service history is a more meaningful choice than a nominal advantage on a specification sheet.
