Omega specifies a 45 mm titanium case and caliber 5619, with three time zones, a chronograph, timer, MET/PET displays, three alarms and a perpetual calendar. The available evidence establishes its specifications, not a firsthand assessment of comfort, legibility or button operation, so those parts of a buying decision need to be checked on the individual watch.
Which watch does “3rd Gen X-33” mean?
This review concerns the Omega Speedmaster Skywalker X-33, reference 318.90.45.79.01.001. Omega identifies it as the 2014 Skywalker X-33 and lists the product as discontinued. The phrase “third generation” is used here for this specific Skywalker reference; it should not be read as a catch-all for earlier X-33 models, special editions, or the later X-33 Marstimer. Omega’s product record and its historical page are the relevant manufacturer references.
What does the Skywalker X-33 do?
Caliber 5619 is a multifunction quartz movement with an analog display and LCD. Omega lists the following functions:
- Three time zones
- Chronograph
- Timer
- MET (mission elapsed time) and PET (phase elapsed time)
- Three alarms
- Perpetual calendar
Omega’s historical material says the hands can be moved aside to make the digital display easier to read. The combination makes the watch a dedicated timing instrument with familiar hands, rather than a digital-only tool or a standard two- or three-register chronograph. That breadth is useful only if the wearer wants to operate and consult several modes; the specifications alone cannot establish how intuitive the controls feel in use.

What are the case dimensions and fit?
Omega publishes the following measurements for reference 318.90.45.79.01.001. They describe the watch but do not predict how it will fit a particular wrist.
| Specification | Omega’s published figure |
|---|---|
| Case diameter | 45 mm |
| Lug-to-lug | 48.50 mm |
| Thickness | 14.70 mm |
| Lug width | 20 mm |
| Approximate product weight | 114 g |
| Case material | Titanium |
The case is substantial by diameter and thickness. The lug-to-lug measurement is particularly useful when judging whether the watch may overhang a wrist, but dimensions cannot substitute for trying it on: bracelet or strap configuration and individual wrist shape also affect fit. Omega lists a black dial and a box-shaped sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment on both sides.

How does the display and operation work?
The design pairs analog hands with a digital display, allowing the wearer to read time traditionally while accessing the additional timing modes on the LCD. Omega documents a feature that moves the hands aside for easier digital-display viewing. The product information does not establish real-world LCD readability in different lighting, the clarity of the hands against the display, or how quickly a new owner can navigate the controls.
For a prospective buyer, test the exact specimen rather than assuming the feature list guarantees an easy workflow. Check that the LCD is legible, the hands respond as expected when moved aside, and the buttons reliably access the modes you intend to use. Omega provides an official basic-functions guide; consult it for operating details rather than inferring button sequences from the specifications.

Movement, battery and water resistance
Omega identifies the movement as quartz caliber 5619 and specifies a temperature-compensation circuit. The manufacturer lists a CR2320 3 V battery and a battery life of 24 months. That duration is Omega’s published specification, not an independently measured interval for every watch; actual battery condition on a discontinued example should be confirmed. The battery type alone is not a safe DIY replacement procedure.
Omega rates the watch at 3 bar (30 m / 100 ft). That is the stated water-resistance rating, not a promise that the watch is suitable for swimming or diving. For a used example, have its present condition and sealing assessed rather than assuming a past rating guarantees current resistance.

What does the ESA connection mean?
Omega associates the special functions of caliber 5619 with European Space Agency development, testing and qualification. The claim should be kept at that scope: the cited Omega material does not establish that this exact watch as a whole was issued by the ESA, worn on a named mission, or certified as flight equipment.

The Skywalker X-33 is most compelling for someone who specifically wants an analog-digital quartz Speedmaster with dedicated mission-time functions. Someone seeking a conventional chronograph, a smaller case, or a watch for water activities should weigh those requirements separately; the X-33’s feature count does not erase its size or 3-bar rating.

Because Omega marks this reference discontinued, there is no current official product availability established here. Secondary-market listings can vary in authenticity, condition and completeness, and current stock or pricing is not verified. Before buying, check the reference, inspect the display and controls, and ask for documented service history and an assessment of the watch’s present condition. Omega’s published specifications describe the model, not the accuracy, reliability, resale value or service status of a particular example.
Verdict
The Skywalker X-33 is a specialized, function-dense quartz Speedmaster, not simply a conventional chronograph with an LCD added. Its appeal rests on the combination of caliber 5619’s multiple timekeeping modes and analog-digital display. The 45 mm case and discontinued status make fit and specimen condition central to the decision; a prospective buyer should try the watch and verify its operation before committing.
