Omega Speedmaster Super Racing: How It Wears and What Spirate Does

The 44.25 mm Omega Speedmaster Super Racing pairs a honeycomb dial and yellow details with calibre 9920 and the Spirate fine-adjustment system. Here’s what its dimensions and Omega-published claims mean for prospective wearers.

The Omega Speedmaster Super Racing (ref. 329.30.44.51.01.003) is a substantial 44.25 mm steel chronograph, distinguished by a black honeycomb dial, yellow accents and Omega’s Spirate fine-adjustment system. Omega lists it at 50 mm lug-to-lug and 14.9 mm thick, so wrist fit is a central consideration. This is a specifications-led guide, not a first-hand wear report: Robert-Jan Broer of Fratello said it wore well on his 18.5 cm wrist, while noting that its size will not suit everyone.

What is the Speedmaster Super Racing?

Reference 329.30.44.51.01.003 is a stainless-steel Speedmaster chronograph powered by Omega calibre 9920. Its black dial has a honeycomb pattern, a racing-style minute track and yellow details. The black ceramic bezel carries a yellow Grand Feu enamel tachymeter scale. At 3 o’clock is the 60-minute/12-hour chronograph recorder; the date sits at 6. Omega’s launch archive says the honeycomb motif refers to an Omega Museum concept watch associated with extreme magnetic-field testing. Swatch Group’s 2023 launch archive and Omega’s regional product page document the design and reference.

How does it wear?

Omega publishes a 44.25 mm case diameter, 50.00 mm lug-to-lug length and 14.90 mm thickness. Those figures describe a large, fairly thick chronograph; the 50 mm span is particularly relevant because it indicates how far the case reaches across the wrist. Whether it sits comfortably depends on wrist shape as well as circumference, so dimensions alone cannot guarantee fit.

In his 2023 review, Fratello’s Robert-Jan Broer reported that the watch wore well on his 18.5 cm wrist, but cautioned that it is large and not for everyone. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a fit test across wrist sizes. If possible, try it on and assess whether the lugs stay within your wrist’s edges and whether the thickness feels comfortable under a sleeve. Omega also lists a 21 mm lug width. Broer’s review discusses his wear impression; Omega’s product page supplies the dimensions.

What is the Spirate system?

Spirate is Omega’s fine-adjustment system for the movement’s rate. Swatch Group’s 2023 launch archive describes a patent-pending spiral made from a silicon wafer using deep reactive ion etching (DRIE), designed to enable ultra-fine rate adjustment. The Super Racing was the first Omega timepiece to include Spirate; the Hong Kong product sheet identifies the system in calibre 9920.

Omega stated a certified precision of 0/+2 seconds per day for the watch. This is a manufacturer claim tied to certification, not a timing result independently measured here or a guarantee that every individual watch will show exactly that rate in every wearing condition. Swatch Group describes the METAS Master Chronometer process as eight tests over ten days; that is the certification process, not a test conducted for this article. Swatch Group’s 2023 archive explains Spirate and gives the precision claim; Omega’s Hong Kong product sheet identifies the movement and certification.

Bracelet, strap and water resistance

The official listing documents a steel bracelet. Omega’s 2023 launch materials also describe an included black-and-yellow recycled-nylon NATO strap and strap-changing tool. Package contents can vary by market or seller, so check the specific listing before relying on those accessories being included. The 21 mm lug width is useful when considering another strap, but confirm fit and suitability for the watch before buying.

Omega rates water resistance at 50 m / 5 bar. That is the published rating; it should not be read as a claim that the watch is suitable for every kind of water activity. See Omega’s product page for the bracelet and specifications, and Swatch Group’s launch archive for the NATO strap and tool.

Who should consider it?

The Super Racing makes most sense for someone who wants a large, visually distinctive Speedmaster and values its Spirate-equipped calibre as a technical feature. Its yellow-on-black racing design is more assertive than a restrained, conventional chronograph. The case measurements make an in-person try-on especially useful if you are unsure about a 44.25 mm watch with a 50 mm lug span.

For a comparison with another chronograph, look beyond diameter: compare lug-to-lug length and thickness for fit, movement and precision claims for mechanics, water-resistance rating for intended use, dial layout for legibility, and the bracelet or strap options. Current price and regional availability are not established here; check Omega or an authorized retailer for current local details.
