The goal is to help people with presbyopia refocus from near to far without switching glasses or moving their head to look through different zones of a progressive lens. The technology has been demonstrated in research prototypes, but the sources available here do not establish a finished, currently purchasable autofocus product.
How do autofocus glasses change focus?
An autofocus system has two jobs: determine the relevant viewing distance or gaze target, then adjust the optical power of its lenses. Unlike a conventional progressive lens, which has fixed zones for different distances, a variable-focus lens changes its optical power in response to the system’s input.
Stanford’s research prototype: eye tracking, depth sensing and tunable lenses
A 2019 Stanford prototype combined eye tracking, a depth camera and focus-tunable lenses. Its listed components included a Pupil Labs eye tracker, an Intel RealSense R200 depth camera, Optotune EL-30-45 lenses and custom coma-correction optics. The research group said eye tracking mattered: users responded negatively to an earlier version controlled only by a depth camera. The setup was a research apparatus on a custom frame, not evidence of a retail-ready pair. Stanford Computational Imaging Group’s study summary
Laclarée’s Gamma concept: distance sensors and fluidic actuators
The EU-funded I-SEE project report describes Laclarée’s Gamma concept as combining distance-sensing devices, a fluidic micro-actuator in each temple and variable lenses. The intended system adapts correction to the distance between wearer and object. The project description gives a response time under one second and a 20 mm variable zone for close-up vision; these are project-reported specifications for a product under development, not independent tests of a retail product. The European Commission’s CORDIS project report also describes earlier exploratory testing with 40 patients, reported by the project, rather than a full peer-reviewed clinical outcome report.

Elcyo’s approach: Fresnel liquid-crystal lenses
Elcyo describes a thin, large-diameter adjustable lens based on Fresnel liquid-crystal technology. The company says its autofocal glasses are under development. Its company page gives a target of launching products around fall 2027 and invites people to join a waitlist; that is a company target, not confirmation of a launch or current availability.
Who are they intended to help?
The intended use is presbyopia: the age-related loss of the eye’s ability to accommodate, or refocus clearly at near distances. A fixed-focus single-vision lens cannot cover the full range as that ability narrows. Existing corrections include reading glasses, multiple pairs, progressive lenses and other refocusing lenses. Stanford’s 2019 study page says nearly 20% of people worldwide are affected; this is the prevalence figure reported on that page, not a newly verified estimate for 2026. What has testing shown—and what has it not shown?
In the 2019 Stanford prototype evaluation, 19 users completed assessments of visual acuity, contrast sensitivity and refocusing tasks. The study summary reports better acuity than participants’ monovision or progressive corrections, similar contrast sensitivity, faster refocusing and significantly greater task accuracy than progressives. A separate preference study involved 37 users; 23 ranked autofocals best for ease of refocusing. The same page notes that the prototype’s VR-headset form factor was less comfortable. These findings describe specific prototype evaluations, not proof of long-term comfort, durability, or the performance of a finished consumer product. The results are promising, but they do not establish a comparative clinical recommendation or show that every wearer will benefit. The sources here do not establish comprehensive prescription compatibility, long-term wear evidence, current retail availability or pricing for the autofocus products described.

Are autofocus glasses available to buy?
The cited sources describe research and development efforts, not verified current retail products. Elcyo says its products are under development and targets a launch around fall 2027. The EU’s I-SEE report describes Laclarée’s Gamma design work as completed by April 2025, with reliability testing, regulatory work including CE marking, and commercial preparation in progress or planned. It describes intended first sales in France, followed by nearby countries, through opticians with in-store trial mounts. The report covers a period ending November 30, 2025, and was last updated December 29, 2025; it does not confirm a 2026 retail launch. Stanford’s autofocus glasses remain a research prototype in the cited 2019 study.
How do they compare with glasses you can get now?
Autofocus glasses are intended to change lens power electronically as viewing distance changes. Current corrections work differently: reading glasses provide near focus, while progressive lenses have fixed zones, typically placing distance vision in the upper region and near vision in the lower region. With progressives, wearers move their head or eyes to use the appropriate zone; ordinary progressive reading glasses do not automatically adjust focus.
| Correction | How focus is provided | What the wearer does | Availability established by the cited sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Autofocus glasses | Electronic sensing and variable-focus optics are intended to adjust lens power to the viewing distance or gaze target. | Designed to refocus through the eyewear rather than by switching pairs or seeking fixed lens zones. | Development efforts and a research prototype are described; current retail availability is not established. |
| Progressive lenses | Fixed lens zones provide different corrections, with distance typically above and near below. | Looks through the relevant zone, often moving the eyes or head to access it. | Described as an existing presbyopia correction in the Stanford study summary. |
| Reading glasses | Fixed near-focus correction. | Uses them for near tasks and may need another correction for other distances. | Described as an existing presbyopia correction in the Stanford study summary. |
If you need a correction now, an optician can help compare near, intermediate and distance coverage, field of view, prescription suitability, comfort and adaptation needs. A search for “progressive reading glasses” refers to a conventional alternative category, not autofocus technology. Ask an eye-care professional about the correction suited to your vision rather than assuming a development-stage autofocus design will fit your prescription.
