To use your own photo as a Garmin watch face, create a Face It face in the Connect IQ Store app on your phone, then install it to a compatible watch. Choose a photo or take one, pick a layout, add any available data fields, and install; the app initiates a sync through Garmin Connect.
How to add a photo with Garmin Face It
- Open Connect IQ Store on your phone. Select Face It from the app’s bottom menu. Garmin describes Face It as its route for creating custom photo watch faces in the Connect IQ Store.
- Start a watch face. Tap the add control, then choose Photos to select an image from your phone, Camera to take a new picture, or Preset Backgrounds if that option is available for your model. Allow photo access if your phone asks. Garmin’s Face It setup instructions note that preset backgrounds are available only on select models.
- Choose a layout. The layout determines how the clock and any data appear over the image. Depending on the watch and app options, layouts may include analog or digital time and data such as steps, heart rate, or battery life, as described in Garmin’s watch-face customization overview.
- Position optional data and save. Add any available complications, position them, save the design, and give it a name.
- Install and sync. Select Install and follow the prompts for your watch. Garmin says installation initiates a sync through Garmin Connect to transfer the face to the device.
How to select the installed face on the watch
After installation, you may need to select the new face on the watch; it may appear separately from the built-in faces. The exact menu path and button names depend on the model. For example, the Instinct E owner’s manual describes customizing data and background color for built-in faces and separately refers to installed Connect IQ faces. Those built-in customization options are not the same as adding a personal photo, and the Instinct E menu is not a universal Garmin path.
Check compatibility and the Always On Display limitation
Face It does not work with every Garmin fitness device, and available layouts and data can vary by watch and app version. Check for your exact model in the current Connect IQ Store app before designing the face. Garmin support also states that custom Face It faces are not compatible with the Always On Display setting. If you rely on an always-on screen, check your device’s settings and manual before switching to a Face It face; Garmin’s support note on Face It and Always On Display documents the limitation.
Is a third-party photo watch face necessary?
No. Face It is Garmin’s own photo-face creation feature. The Connect IQ Store also lists Photo Pro, a third-party alternative. Its listing describes one photo at a time in the basic free selection and additional options in paid tiers. Check the live listing for current compatibility, features, and terms; it is optional software, not a purchase required to use Face It.
