Yes, the complaint is real: some Galaxy Watch 5 Pro units show implausibly fast charging, frozen percentages, or sudden drops after upgrading to One UI 8 Watch. The strongest evidence points to a software battery-reporting or state-of-charge calculation problem, not proof that every watch’s lithium-ion battery has been physically damaged.
That distinction matters. Many affected owners still get roughly normal runtime, while others report genuine drain as well. Samsung has released newer firmware, but the public changelog for the June 23, 2026 U.S. LTE update does not explicitly confirm that this battery-indicator problem was fixed.
What the One UI 8 Watch problem looks like
Reports from Galaxy Watch 5 Pro owners describe several related patterns. Independent coverage and Samsung Community posts document the following symptoms:
- Charging appears too fast: a watch may move from about 60% to 100% in roughly 25 minutes, then fall to about 75% shortly after it is removed from the charger.
- The percentage freezes: one owner reported the display remaining at 58% for hours before changing to 50%, 46% and lower after a restart.
- Large post-charge corrections: the watch can show 100% on the charger, then immediately display a substantially lower level.
- Possible real drain: some owners say the watch no longer lasts as long after the update, which may be a separate power-consumption problem or may coexist with inaccurate reporting.
These are user reports, not a measured failure rate. There is no reliable denominator showing what proportion of Watch 5 Pro owners are affected. Similar complaints have also appeared among some standard Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 4 users, although the Watch 5 Pro is the main subject here.

Is the Watch 5 Pro battery actually damaged?
An incorrect percentage is not, by itself, evidence of a worn-out battery. A watch estimates its state of charge using software, voltage and charging data. If that estimate is wrong, the display can jump or remain stuck even while the cell still provides normal operating time.
An indicator problem is more likely when:
- ordinary runtime remains broadly normal;
- the percentage stays fixed and then jumps;
- charging reaches 100% implausibly quickly;
- removing the watch from the charger causes an immediate large drop; or
- a reboot changes the percentage without a corresponding period of use.
Genuine drain or hardware trouble is more concerning when the watch loses charge rapidly while idle or powered off, becomes unusually hot, shuts down while showing substantial charge, cannot maintain a stable charge, or no longer lasts a normal day. Swelling, a separating case or display, and repeated charging failures require service rather than more software troubleshooting.

The evidence does not establish one cause for every complaint. A bad estimate and real excess consumption can occur together, so judge the watch by measured runtime, temperature and charging behavior—not the number on the screen alone.

Has Samsung fixed the battery-indicator bug?
There is no definitive public confirmation. Samsung has issued later One UI 8 Watch firmware, and the June 23, 2026 U.S. LTE notes add or support Connected device diagnostics, including a battery-status check. However, those notes do not specifically say that inaccurate Watch 5 Pro battery percentages were corrected.
One Samsung Community response said a software patch was being prepared for sensor and battery-reporting problems affecting Watch4 and Watch5 devices. That is evidence of a support escalation, not proof that a fix shipped. Other owners say support or service logs showed nothing abnormal. Those accounts cannot establish a single official position.
As of August 18, 2026, the defensible conclusion is that the issue is credible and appears software-related on some devices, but Samsung has not published a clear root-cause statement or a changelog entry specifically confirming a fix. A later build may improve the behavior without mentioning it in consumer-facing notes, but that cannot be confirmed from the published notes alone.

What to do now
- Identify the exact model and software. Record the model number, software version and build in the watch or Galaxy Wearable app. Do not assume advice for SM-R925U applies to SM-R920 or another regional variant.
- Install the newest official firmware offered for that model. Use the Galaxy Wearable/watch software-update flow, keep the watch sufficiently charged and on its charger when Samsung requires it, and do not sideload firmware from unofficial sources.
- Update the companion apps. Samsung’s June 2026 notes say Connected device diagnostics requires current Samsung Members and Galaxy Wearable apps.
- Restart once and document the result. A reboot can refresh the estimate or cause a large jump. That supports a reporting problem, but it is only a temporary resynchronization—not a confirmed repair.
- Run Connected device diagnostics if available. Use the connected phone’s battery-status diagnostic and save the result. A “normal” result does not prove an intermittent display error is absent.
- Perform a controlled charge-and-use observation. Use the normal Samsung-compatible charger. Note the starting percentage and time, leave the watch charging through a normal full-charge period rather than stopping at a suspiciously fast 100%, then record the percentage at fixed intervals during ordinary wear. Compare runtime, shutdown behavior and any correction after a reboot. Repeat once or twice; this is a practical diagnostic, not a laboratory capacity test.
- Submit an error report promptly. Reproduce the problem, then send logs through the Galaxy Wearable/Samsung Members route. Include the timeline and photographs or screenshots.
What to send Samsung
- Exact model, such as SM-R920, SM-R925U or the regional equivalent.
- Software version and build number.
- Serial number if official support requests it.
- Date the behavior began.
- Charging start and end times, with percentages before and after.
- Whether a restart changes the displayed level.
- Whether actual runtime has changed.
- Any overheating, unexpected shutdown, charging error or physical change.
- Photos or screenshots showing the percentage behavior.
Samsung Community guidance asks owners to reproduce the problem and submit an error report through Galaxy Wearable; see the support response.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.What not to do
- Do not treat repeated reboots as a permanent workaround. They may refresh the estimate but do not repair the underlying software.
- Do not factory-reset first. Some owners report no improvement after resetting, and a reset erases data and setup. Back up the watch and follow Samsung’s instructions if support specifically requests one.
- Do not assume a fast 100% reading means a normal full charge. Record elapsed charging time and subsequent runtime.
- Do not repeatedly deep-discharge the lithium-ion battery to “calibrate” it without authoritative Samsung guidance.
- Do not open the watch or install unofficial firmware.
When to stop troubleshooting and seek service
Contact Samsung service or warranty support if the watch overheats, shuts down while showing substantial charge, loses most of its runtime even after updating, repeatedly stops charging, cannot reach a stable charge, or shows swelling or case/display separation. Stop using a watch with suspected physical battery damage and do not attempt an at-home replacement.
If temperature, charging and real-world endurance remain normal, the condition is more consistent with an accuracy problem than catastrophic battery failure. Continue documenting it until Samsung provides a model- and region-specific fix or service diagnosis.

Bottom line
One UI 8 Watch appears to have disrupted battery-level reporting on some Galaxy Watch 5 Pro units. That does not prove the battery itself is ruined, and it does not explain every report of shorter runtime. Install the latest official firmware for your exact model, update Galaxy Wearable and Samsung Members, run diagnostics when available, measure actual runtime, and submit reproducible logs. Until Samsung explicitly documents a fix, trust charging behavior and elapsed use more than a rapidly changing percentage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a factory reset fix the One UI 8 Watch battery indicator problem?
Some owners report that a factory reset did not correct the behavior, so it should not be the first step for this narrowly defined issue. Back up the watch and reset only if Samsung support specifically directs you to do so.
Is it safe to keep wearing a Watch 5 Pro with an incorrect percentage?
If runtime, temperature and charging are otherwise normal, the reports are more consistent with an indicator problem. Stop using the watch and seek service for overheating, swelling, charging failures, unexpected shutdowns or severe real-world drain.
