Fitbit batteries are built in and officially non-user-replaceable. Some older models can be opened with a model-specific third-party battery, but current Fitbits are usually better handled through Google support or replaced. Before opening anything, identify the exact model, rule out charging and software problems, sync your data, and check warranty eligibility.
Identify the exact Fitbit model first
“Fitbit” covers trackers and watches with different batteries, adhesives, connectors, displays and sealing methods. A battery sold for one model should never be assumed to fit another, even within the same family.
| Model or family | Official user battery replacement | Third-party availability listed | Practical path |
|---|---|---|---|
| Charge, Charge 2, Charge 3/4 | No; batteries are built in | iFixit listings included Charge, Charge 2 and Charge 3/4 parts | Possible DIY only with an exact part and guide; otherwise support or replacement |
| Charge 5/6 | No | No readily available battery-only listing was published for every current model | Troubleshoot, then use Google support or replace |
| Inspire, Inspire HR, Inspire 2/3 | No | Inspire HR part listed; current-model availability varies | Use support for recent models; treat older repairs as specialist work |
| Luxe | No | Third-party Luxe battery listed | DIY only if the exact part and guide match; sealing is not assured |
| Versa, Versa Lite, Versa 2/3/4 | No | Parts listed for Versa, Versa Lite, Versa 2 and Versa 3 | Older out-of-warranty models may be repairable; current models usually go through Google |
| Sense/Sense 2 | No | Sense 2 part listed | Follow only a Sense-specific guide; support is safer for recent watches |
| Ionic | No | Third-party guides and parts exist | Repairability does not mean current official support; assess age and safety first |
| Alta/Alta HR, Blaze, Surge, One | No | Third-party parts listed for several of these older models | DIY may make sense only when the device is out of warranty and otherwise healthy |
| Zip | Uses a replaceable coin cell rather than the sealed rechargeable design | Not comparable to wrist-device battery swaps | Use the correct coin-cell specification for the exact Zip model |
Fitbit manuals for Charge, Versa and Sense describe the battery as not user-replaceable and warn that opening or tampering can create a safety hazard and affect warranty coverage: Charge manual, Versa manual and Sense manual.
Check whether the battery is really the problem
A battery that lasts less than a day may be worn out, but it can also reflect settings, charging hardware or a failed circuit.

Try the low-risk charging checks
- Sync the Fitbit with the Fitbit or Google Health app.
- Use the correct model-specific cable and a wall outlet rather than a computer USB port.
- Clean the charging contacts gently and inspect for corrosion or damage.
- Leave a completely black device connected for 60 minutes.
- Attempt the model’s official restart procedure. For Sense and Versa watches, Google’s charging guidance includes holding the physical side button for 10 seconds while connected to the charger.
Follow Google’s current troubleshooting instructions at Fitbit won’t charge or turn on.
Consider power-hungry settings
Always-On Display, built-in GPS, frequent notifications, temperature and poor signal conditions can reduce runtime without a failed cell. Google’s estimates are approximate: Inspire 2 and 3 are listed at up to 10 days, Charge 5 and 6 up to 7 days, Sense 2 and Versa 4 up to 6+ days in the general table, Fitbit One up to two weeks and Zip up to six months. Continuous GPS and Always-On Display reduce those figures. After several hundred charge cycles, more frequent charging is normal. See Google’s battery-life guidance.

Symptoms that need a different diagnosis
- A battery icon appears but the device never boots: possible software, display or mainboard trouble.
- Charging starts and stops: suspect contacts, cable, connector or charging circuitry.
- A red “X” or boot loop appears: do not assume a new battery will fix it.
- The percentage jumps or stays inaccurate: calibration or battery-management failure is possible.
- The device is hot, swollen, cracked, smoking or emitting an odor: stop using it immediately.
Prepare before any repair or service claim
- Record the exact model, serial number and purchase date.
- Sync and photograph the device and its current condition.
- Check warranty status before removing adhesive or screws.
- Use only the correct charger and complete the official restart checks.
- Back up data. Google warns that service or replacement can result in data loss.
For a swollen battery, do not charge, press the screen back into place, puncture, bend, squeeze or disassemble the Fitbit. Keep it away from flammable materials only if that can be done without risky handling, seek local battery or electronic-waste guidance, and follow carrier rules before shipping. Google’s safety guidance is at this swollen-battery article.
Use Google warranty and support first
- Check the purchase date and country or region.
- Find the serial number.
- Open Google’s Fitbit warranty and repair page.
- Run the requested diagnostics and describe the charging symptoms accurately.
- Provide proof of purchase if requested.
- Follow the return or replacement instructions, backing up data before shipment.
For devices purchased on or after July 11, 2023, Google directs owners to the Google Hardware Warranty Center. Earlier purchases may fall under the older Fitbit Limited Warranty, depending on country and product. Google says accidental damage is not covered by the standard warranty; an eligible defective device may be replaced after inspection, while out-of-warranty owners can ask whether service is available. A replacement may be refurbished rather than the original unit.

The older Fitbit Limited Warranty generally stated one year for new products, or two years for qualifying purchases in the European Economic Area, with 90 days for refurbished products. It excluded consumables such as batteries and damage from unauthorized repair or third-party parts. Apply those terms only to the relevant purchase date and jurisdiction; see the warranty document.
When a DIY battery swap is realistic
DIY is most defensible for an older, out-of-warranty Fitbit with a clearly matching replacement cell and a reputable, model-specific guide. iFixit’s battery catalog at https://www.ifixit.com/Parts/Fitbit_Smartwatch/Batteries showed third-party parts on August 18, 2026, generally about $14.99–$29.99 depending on model. Those prices can change, stock may be limited, and they do not prove official Fitbit support.

Do not use a generic cell with the same voltage. The replacement must match dimensions, chemistry, capacity, connector, polarity, protection circuitry and electrical requirements for the exact model.
Typical repair sequence
- Power down the Fitbit if possible.
- Soften enclosure adhesive with controlled heat.
- Separate the screen or rear housing without pulling flex cables.
- Remove shields, brackets and internal adhesive as required.
- Disconnect and lift out the old cell without puncturing it.
- Install the exact replacement with correct polarity and cable routing.
- Reconnect the battery and display, then test before final sealing.
- Apply suitable new adhesive if the construction permits it.
- Calibrate only as the exact guide instructs. For example, iFixit’s Versa 3 battery guidance says to charge to 100% and continue charging for at least two additional hours: Versa 3 battery guide.
Tools and hazards
Depending on the model, you may need precision Phillips, Torx or specialty drivers, plastic opening picks, a nonconductive spudger, tweezers, controlled heat, replacement adhesive, eye protection and a clean work surface. Avoid metal knives, uncontrolled heat and improvised charging. A multimeter is appropriate only for someone familiar with lithium-ion safety.

What changes after opening the enclosure?
Water resistance is no longer guaranteed. Even if the Fitbit boots and charges, the original adhesive seal may not be restored to factory condition. Do not swim, shower or deliberately submerge a repaired device unless the repairer can substantiate a correctly restored seal—a difficult standard for home repair.
Before relying on the watch, test charging, booting, buttons, touchscreen, sensors, syncing and notifications. Dispose of the old cell through local lithium-battery or electronic-waste channels; do not put it in household trash.
If the replacement does not work
- No power: Recheck connector seating, polarity and whether the replacement cell has charge.
- Boot loop or red X: Treat it as possible software or mainboard failure and use Google’s reset and sync guidance.
- Black screen: Inspect the display flex connection before condemning the battery.
- Rapid drain: Confirm the exact part, inspect for board damage or a short, and disable high-drain features.
- Heat during testing: Disconnect power immediately and stop.
- Wrong percentage: Complete the calibration required by the exact model guide.
- Torn connector or flex cable: Further repair may cost more than the tracker is worth.
DIY, official support or a replacement tracker?
| Situation | Best choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Recent model, possible warranty defect | Google support | Lower safety risk and a chance of an official replacement |
| Older model with an exact listed battery and experienced repairer | DIY or an established repair shop | May extend useful life, but sealing and success are uncertain |
| No confirmed part, difficult display separation or suspected board fault | Replace the tracker | A battery swap may not address the failure |
| Reliable water resistance is essential | Support or a sealed replacement | Home repair cannot normally verify the original seal |
| Swollen, hot or physically damaged battery | Stop using it and seek safety/support guidance | It is not a normal repair project |
Google’s published minimum security-support table, as listed in August 2026, lists Charge 6, Inspire 3, Sense 2 and Versa 4 through at least February 2028; Luxe through June 2026; Inspire 2 through April 2026; and Charge 5, Versa 2 and Versa 3 through December 2025. These are minimum security commitments, not promises of battery service or app compatibility: Google’s support-period table.
For a current replacement option, the official Charge 6 purchase page is Google Store; check the live price and availability rather than assuming a fixed cost.

Verdict: Treat a Fitbit battery as sealed and non-user-replaceable unless your exact older model has a reputable third-party part and guide. Recent Fitbits should be troubleshot and taken to Google first; swollen or damaged devices should not be opened; and a repair whose total cost approaches a replacement tracker is usually poor value.
