Ophion’s “accessible high-end” positioning is a value judgment, not an objective price category. The Vélos makes its case with a compact steel case, elaborate dial work and a decorated hand-wound movement with a five-day power reserve.

The catalogue separately lists an €80 cowhide-to-alligator upgrade and a €150 extra alligator strap. What distinguishes the Vélos?
Ophion describes the Vélos as an evolution of the OPH 786, with a new case, dial layout and handset, as well as more movement decoration than the earlier watch. The name means “arrow” in classical Greek, according to Ophion, referring to the shape of the hour hand. The earlier OPH 786 reviewed in 2018 is a predecessor, not the Vélos. Dial options: radial brushing or CNC guilloché
Radial-brushed dial
The less expensive option comes in blue or anthracite. Its radial brushing gives the surface a directional finish rather than the repeated patterned relief of the guilloché dial.
CNC-guilloché dial
The higher-priced dial is offered in blue, salmon and silvered-white. Ophion calls the treatment CNC Guilloche. In its 2020 review, Monochrome explained that CNC engraving removes material to create depth and reflections; it is not hand-engine-turned guilloché. That distinction matters if traditional hand-operated engine turning is part of what you want from the watch.

Case, dimensions and crystals
- Hand-polished 316L stainless-steel case
- 39 mm case diameter; 38.5 mm bezel
- 10.45 mm thick including the crystal, or 8.85 mm without it
- 20 mm lug width
- Domed sapphire front crystal and flat sapphire caseback crystal
- Anti-reflective coating on the interior and exterior surfaces of both crystals, according to Ophion
The teardrop lugs are independently made and welded. Ophion identifies Voutilainen-Cattin S.A. as its case-production collaborator. Monochrome’s 2020 reviewer praised the case and proportions, but wanted more effective anti-reflective coating; that is the reviewer’s assessment, not a measured finding or a universal defect.

Movement and practical specifications
The hand-wound movement is 13¼ lignes, has two barrels, 26 jewels and a stated five-day power reserve. Ophion says it was designed and decorated to its specifications, with proprietary main and balance-wheel bridges and an updated grenaillé finish; production is in collaboration with MHVJ and Soprod in Switzerland.
Monochrome’s 2020 review reports a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and 50 m water resistance. Those figures do not appear in the captured current manufacturer specification text, so treat them as information from that dated review rather than as independently confirmed current specifications. If water resistance is important to your intended use, verify it with Ophion before purchase.

Strap and configuration
The watch comes with a handmade leather strap. Ophion offers an alligator upgrade and lists an extra alligator strap separately. The stated 20 mm lug width is useful when considering a replacement: check strap length and attachment compatibility, and do not assume a generic replacement is an Ophion-branded component. Ophion names JacobStraps in Spain as its strap collaborator.

The Vélos is aimed at buyers who value a small-maker design, a polished steel case, layered dial finishing and a highly decorated hand-wound movement. The €200 difference between the displayed radial and CNC-guilloché prices buys a different dial treatment and color selection; it does not turn the latter into hand-turned guilloché. Whether that premium is worthwhile depends on how much you value the added surface pattern.

Monochrome reviewer Brice Goulard praised the case, layered dial and movement decoration, while noting conservative strap styling and his reservations about the anti-reflective coating. He summarized his opinion: “This watch is well proportioned, full of charm and references to high-end watchmaking, elegant yet with a twist and, good point, its own personality.” That is a reviewer’s judgment, not a guarantee of fit or value for every buyer.
