Oris rated the original to 100 metres; current Sixty-Five models retain a 10-bar rating but vary by reference in size, date display, movement and other details. The name also covers distinct models: the 40 mm 60th Anniversary Edition is specifically described by Oris as a reinterpretation of the first diver, while a 42 mm date model is a separate example.

What links the modern watch to the 1965 original?
Oris describes the original as a simple, legible dive watch with 100 metres of water resistance. Its account of the design lineage points to period numerals, a domed crystal, a flat side profile, a rotating bezel and a riveted metal band as cues that informed later heritage styling. These are design connections, not evidence that the modern watch reproduces every original component or specification.
Oris Head of Design Lukas Bühlmann calls the original “an Oris design treasure and characteristic of the 1960s, when it was issued.” He says the design team wanted the relationship between the original and the newer design to be visible. That describes Oris’s design intent rather than independently verifying the watches’ technical history.

How construction differs
A 2015 launch-era report describes the original as having a brass case, plexiglass crystal and bidirectional bezel. It contrasts those features with the first modern 40 mm Divers Sixty-Five, which it describes as having a stainless-steel case, double-domed anti-reflective sapphire crystal and unidirectional aluminium bezel. This is a limited comparison from that report, not a complete specification for every 1965 original or later Sixty-Five. Oris’s historical booklet does not provide a full original-reference specification table.
For the current anniversary model, Oris specifies a domed sapphire crystal with internal anti-reflective coating and notes a production-year change to bezel direction: bidirectional through 2025, unidirectional from 2026. Confirm the specific watch’s production year and reference rather than assuming all anniversary editions have the same bezel.

Which modern reference fits your priorities?
Choose the 42 mm date reference if you want a date display
The cited 42 mm reference pairs an automatic Calibre 733 with a date and a manufacturer-listed 38-hour power reserve. Oris gives it a 21 mm interhorn width and lists 21 mm fitting straps for this reference. Those measurements are specific to reference 01 733 7720 4054-07 5 21 45; do not assume another Sixty-Five takes the same strap.
Choose the 40 mm anniversary reference if you want the no-date reinterpretation
The 60th Anniversary Edition is 40 mm, has no date and uses automatic Calibre 733-1, with a manufacturer-listed 41-hour power reserve. Its listed interhorn width is 20 mm. Oris identifies this model as a reinterpretation of its first dive watch, making it the more explicitly named anniversary link to the original among these two examples.

Compare size and fit on the exact watch
The examples differ by 2 mm in stated case diameter and by 1 mm in listed interhorn width. Those numbers help narrow a choice, but they do not establish how either watch will wear on an individual wrist. Check the reference and strap width before ordering a replacement strap.
What the water-resistance ratings do—and do not—tell you
Oris gives the 1965 original a 100-metre rating. Its current pages list 10 bar for both cited modern references. These are manufacturer specifications, not results of a comparative pressure test or evidence that the watches are suitable for every diving activity. A rating alone does not establish performance in a particular use; follow Oris’s guidance for the exact watch and have its condition and seals assessed as appropriate.

What is not established about every original
Oris’s reviewed historical source does not state a complete set of original case dimensions, movement details, crystal specifications or bezel variations across all 1965 watches. The 2015 report supports a construction comparison for the original and the first modern version it discusses, but it does not establish that every original had identical specifications. There is also no comparative laboratory test or independently measured performance result for the examples discussed here.
