No—the Orvis Solunagraph is not solar powered. It is a vintage, manually wound mechanical chronograph made by Heuer for Orvis, with a tide-indication dial. Citizen Eco-Drive, by contrast, is light-powered watch technology used in many different models. The useful comparison is between a specialized vintage watch and a modern way to power a watch—not between two equivalent solar watches.

Citizen’s support page describes the technology this way: “Eco-Drive is designed to convert both natural and artificial light into energy to power watches.” Citizen Watch US Support explains that the stored energy lets the watch keep running without regular battery replacement under normal operation. That is distinct from a manually wound mechanical movement.

Is the Orvis Solunagraph solar powered?
No. The cited Solunagraph references use manual-wind mechanical chronograph movements, not solar charging. Specialist reference material describes the 2446C as a three-register chronograph with a rotating tide-indication dial at nine o’clock, housed in an Autavia compressor case. The cited executions use a Valjoux 723 movement. OnTheDash’s Solunagraph reference distinguishes earlier and later executions by details such as hand finish and markings around the tide dial.

An auction example illustrates why a single specification should not be treated as universal: Phillips catalogued a ref. 2446 SF from circa 1975 with a manual Valjoux 723, 17 jewels, and a 40 mm case. That describes the particular lot, not every Solunagraph. Phillips’ catalog entry also describes Orvis’s 1970s partnership with Heuer to tailor sports watches for its customers.

How does Citizen Eco-Drive work?
Eco-Drive converts light into energy, stores the energy, and uses it to run the watch. Citizen says natural and artificial light can power its watches, and that a fully charged watch can run for more than six months in darkness, subject to model exceptions. Some models have power-saving functions and longer reserves; those capabilities should not be assumed for every Eco-Drive watch. Eco-Drive is not a single watch specification. Movement, hands, complications, case dimensions, materials, water resistance, and power-saving behavior vary by model. For example, Citizen’s AR5064-57L listing identifies movement 8826, a two-hand display, a 38.6 mm case width, stainless-steel bracelet, sapphire crystal, and 50 m/5 bar water resistance. Those are details of that model, not universal Eco-Drive traits; product information and availability can change.

Which one fits what you want?
Choose the Solunagraph for its vintage functions and character
The Solunagraph is the more specialized choice if you want a vintage chronograph with tide indication and value the Heuer-Orvis connection. Its mechanical operation and historical execution are part of what it is; it is not a way to get light-powered timekeeping.

Eco-Drive is the relevant route if you want a watch powered by light. Select a specific model based on its display, complications, dimensions, materials, water resistance, and reserve rather than buying on the technology name alone. A model such as the AR5064-57L is an example of a light-powered alternative, but its listing does not establish a tide indicator or chronograph function.

What to check before buying a Solunagraph
Vintage examples can differ in execution and condition, so assess the individual watch rather than relying on a generic listing description. Ask a qualified vintage-watch specialist to verify and inspect:
- The reference and movement, and whether the claimed configuration matches the watch.
- Originality and condition of the dial, hands, bezel, and case, including execution-specific details.
- Operation of the tide-indication dial and chronograph.
- Service documentation and any available history of maintenance.
An auction catalogue records the details of a particular example; it is not a guarantee of another watch’s condition, originality, or service needs.

How should you compare prices?
A current retail price for a particular Eco-Drive model and an auction result for a particular vintage Solunagraph are not like-for-like measures. Any meaningful price comparison needs to identify the exact Eco-Drive model and the exact vintage example, along with the relevant date and condition. The cited material does not establish a universal price winner or a service-cost advantage for either category.
