The No. 5 Kai is a step toward a more explicit kind of mechanical theatre: it replaces the original No. 5’s regulator-style display with satellite hours, putting the movement of its hour discs in plain view. That makes the watch’s ingenuity easier to appreciate—but, as Borna Bošnjak argued in Time+Tide, it may trade away some of the mystery associated with the No. 6. The Kai’s strongest case is not that one approach is better; it is that Ōtsuka Lōtec can make both approaches compelling.
What changed from the original No. 5?
The No. 5 Kai retains the case-design lineage of the No. 5, which Ōtsuka Lōtec says launched in 2012, along with the use of two Japan-made MinebeaMitsumi ball bearings. The central change is on the dial: the original’s regulator-style time display gives way to satellite, or wandering, hours. The case and bearing motif provide continuity; the more prominent complication makes the Kai a distinct expression of the design.
Jiro Katayama described the relationship in Hodinkee’s launch coverage: “I have produced watches with unique display mechanism modules in the past, and this time I featured satellite hours. The No. 5 Kai inherits the case design of the No. 5, which was launched as the first model in 2012, and the use of two ball bearings is another point inherited from No. 5.” Hodinkee’s launch coverage presents the Kai as a continuation of Katayama’s distinctive display-mechanism work rather than a clean break from the earlier watch.
How does the No. 5 Kai tell time?
Three rotating discs carry four hour numerals apiece. As a disc travels across the arched minute track on the right side of the dial, one numeral indicates the hour and serves in turn as a pointer to the minutes. The discs rotate away as the next numeral comes into position, making the passage from one indication to another part of the display’s visual character. Time+Tide and Hodinkee describe the layout as satellite or wandering hours; Ōtsuka Lōtec supplies the mechanical detail.

A ball-bearing roller at 8 o’clock engages the hour disc so its numeral changes instantaneously twice per hour. A separate seconds disc at 5 o’clock continues moving. The mechanism is therefore not simply a static set of unusual numerals: the changing hour indication and continuously moving seconds provide two different kinds of motion on the dial.
Does the more visible mechanism improve the design?
It improves the Kai’s legibility as a mechanical idea. The satellite-hour arrangement makes the complication immediately apparent, and the discs’ travel across the minute track gives the display a clear visual logic once the wearer understands which numeral is active. For someone drawn to unconventional indications, that openness is the point: the mechanism is not hidden behind a conventional dial layout.

But visibility can reduce mystery. In his 31 January 2025 opinion for Time+Tide, Borna Bošnjak praised the Kai’s “geeky complication” while asking whether its overt display has some of the mystique of the No. 6, whose complexity he describes as more concealed. That is Bošnjak’s design judgment, not a consensus verdict or a statement from the brand. It identifies a genuine trade-off: the Kai makes its ingenuity easier to read, while the No. 6’s more restrained presentation, in his account, leaves more to discover.
On that axis, the Kai is not necessarily a better direction so much as a more explicit one. Its answer to the question of how to show mechanical creativity is to put the display mechanism forward. A less exposed approach can create a different kind of appeal. Collectors who value both clarity and concealment need not choose one as the correct philosophy for the brand.

The official page also identifies a 1.5 mm ball bearing for the seconds disc and calls it the world’s smallest as of 2025; that superlative is the brand’s claim. Time+Tide reported Japan-only online lottery availability at launch, and Hodinkee described a Japan-only raffle for a March 2025 allotment. Those are historical launch reports, not confirmation of present stock, ordering windows or international purchasing terms. Phillips records an auction appearance, which establishes a secondary-market example rather than current availability.

Ōtsuka Lōtec’s instruction is specific: turn the crown forward to set the time and do not turn it backward, which the brand warns could cause damage. Follow the official setting instruction rather than assuming the crown can be adjusted in either direction.
