Ōtsuka Lōtec is an independent Japanese watch brand built around unusual mechanical time displays and an industrial design language. Its No. 8 pairs a jumping hour with a flywheel-linked retrograde minute fader and a rotating seconds disk; the official Japanese price listed on the brand’s site on October 8, 2026, is ¥1,089,000 including tax. It is a distinctive proposition, but its compact case, 3 ATM water resistance, short power reserve, and release-by-release availability are important parts of the buying decision.
What is Ōtsuka Lōtec?
Ōtsuka Lōtec is an independent Japanese watch brand founded by Jiro Katayama, whose background is in product and industrial design. Katayama told Hypebeast that he began making prototypes after acquiring a lathe through an internet auction and started selling the No. 5 publicly in 2012. The name combines the Tokyo neighborhood where his workshop is located with “low-tech,” a phrase he said he liked.
Here, “low-tech” describes an affinity for older engineering and mechanical forms, not a lack of engineering. Katayama designs modules around Miyota base movements, and the result is watches that make the mechanism and indication part of the visual experience. Fratello has reported that thickness and component clearance are practical design considerations in this work. The No. 6’s gauge-like display and the No. 7.5’s movie-camera inspiration show how the industrial references vary across the collection.
How the No. 8 tells time
The No. 8 uses three separate indications rather than conventional hands. The hour appears in a channel and jumps to the next hour. Minutes are shown by a retrograde fader: it travels along its scale, then returns from 60 to zero. A flywheel is linked to that minute indication, adding a visible mechanical element to the display. Seconds appear on a disk that the official specification says makes one revolution every 90 seconds, so its position should not be read like a conventional seconds hand.

The display module contains 62 components and sits on a Miyota 90S5 automatic movement. The official specification lists 33 jewels plus three ball bearings, a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, and approximately 32 hours of power reserve. These are the published specifications, not independently measured performance figures.

The case is only 31 mm wide, but the 47.8 mm lug-to-lug measurement gives it a longer footprint than that width alone suggests. Its rectangular shape and graphic display also make it visually assertive despite the compact width. Monochrome’s 2026 hands-on coverage described the No. 8 as a consolidation of the brand’s visual language; that is the publication’s design judgment, not a universal verdict.

No. 8 vs. No. 6: which approach suits you?
The No. 6 is a useful contrast because it uses retrograde indications differently. Hodinkee’s November 2024 coverage describes retrograde hours and minutes, running seconds, and a date, driven by a Miyota 9015 base and a Katayama-designed module. It has a rounder, wider case than the No. 8. Neither is automatically the better choice: the display, shape, and fit are substantially different.
| No. 6 | No. 8 | |
|---|---|---|
| Display | Retrograde hours and minutes, running seconds, date | Jumping hours, retrograde minute fader, rotating seconds disk |
| Base movement | Miyota 9015, as reported by Hodinkee | Miyota 90S5, per the official specification |
| Case dimensions | 42.6 mm by 11.8 mm, as reported by Hodinkee | 31 mm wide, 47.8 mm lug-to-lug, 10.8 mm thick, per the official specification |
| Water resistance | 30 m, as reported by Hodinkee | 3 ATM, per the official specification |
| Power reserve | 40 hours, as reported by Hodinkee | Approximately 32 hours, per the official specification |
| Strap width | 22 mm, reported by WatchRanker’s 2026 collection guide | 24 mm, per the official specification |
| Price reference | ¥440,000 in Hodinkee’s November 2024 coverage; historical, not a current quote | ¥1,089,000 including tax on the official page, checked October 8, 2026 |
The No. 6 won the GPHG 2024 Challenge award, according to Hodinkee’s November 2024 article. That recognition is a useful part of its history, but it does not resolve which display or case will suit an individual buyer.

What ownership and buying involve
Check the current release terms
Hodinkee reported in November 2024 that Ōtsuka Lōtec watches were mainly sold in Japan through lottery releases, with Japanese-address and Japanese-bank-card restrictions described at that time. Those are dated access details, not a guarantee of the rules for a release in October 2026. Start at the official Ōtsuka Lōtec site and confirm the shop’s terms for the specific model and release, including eligible locations, payment methods, and whether orders are open.
Choose by fit and display, not case width alone
For the No. 8, consider the 47.8 mm lug-to-lug measurement alongside the 31 mm width and the rectangular case shape. If possible, assess how that footprint sits on your wrist before committing. The unconventional display also rewards a buyer who wants to read the time through a jumping hour and retrograde indication rather than familiar hands.

- Stylish Classic Dial Design: This analog watch features a refined dial with full Arabic numerals, delivering a elegant fashion look. The leather strap is soft, durable, and comfortable for daily wear. A clean date window calendar display adds everyday practicality. This wrist watch suits men's wrist watches and women's wrist watches, ideal for business, casual wear, or classic gift occasions.
- Mechanical Hand-Wound Movement: Powered by a classic manual mechanical movement, this wrist watch operates without batteries. Mechanical watches have limited power reserve, so daily or pre-use winding is essential to reduce time deviation and prevent stopping. If not properly wound, the watch may stop easily. Regular winding ensures stable performance and accuracy.
- Care Instructions for Long-Lasting Use: Please remove all protective films before wearing. Handle the watch gently and avoid vigorous activities. Keep away from strong magnetic fields, electronics, and sudden impacts. Avoid sauna use and environments with drastic temperature changes, as moisture may enter the case, leading to movement rust or damage over time.
- Daily Waterproof: This analog watch is daily waterproof, suitable for light splashes, rain, or accidental water drops. Not suitable for showering, swimming, or diving. Prolonged water exposure or use in extreme hot or cold environments may shorten the lifespan of the mechanical movement and affect accuracy.
- Ideal Gift for Any Occasion & Anyone: With its elegant retro style, this wrist watch suits any occasion and outfit. A thoughtful choice for gifts for men, gifts for women, birthday gifts, Christmas gifts, wedding gifts, or retirement gifts. Perfect as a gift for dad, mom, husband, boyfriend, sister, or yourself.
Replace the strap carefully
The No. 8’s stated lug width is 24 mm, a useful starting point if you are looking for a 24 mm watch strap. Width alone does not establish that a generic strap will fit: check the exact reference’s end shape, thickness, and clasp compatibility. WatchRanker’s 2026 collection guide reports that Atelier Jean Rousseau’s Tokyo atelier-boutique accepts orders for custom replacement straps in the brand’s shape; confirm current service terms and eligibility directly with the atelier before relying on that option.
Set the time in the specified direction
The manufacturer instructs No. 8 owners to set the time by moving it forward only. Follow that instruction rather than turning the setting mechanism backward.

Who should consider the No. 8?
- It may suit you if you value original mechanical displays, industrial design, and a watch that draws attention to how it indicates time.
- Think carefully if you prioritize conventional legibility, extended power reserve, greater water resistance, or a compact-looking wrist presence based only on case width.
- Compare the No. 6 if you prefer a rounder, wider case and want retrograde hours as well as minutes, plus a date.
There is no basis here for claiming the No. 8 is a universal upgrade over the No. 6, or for assessing long-term reliability from the published specifications alone. The meaningful choice is whether the particular display, dimensions, and ownership terms match what you want from a watch.
