These are our editorial favorites among the nominees: the Tudor Black Bay 58 GMT for its travel-watch brief, the Grand Seiko Manual-winding Hi-Beat 36000 for its technical ambition, and the MING 37.09 Bluefin, IWC Portugieser Eternal Calendar, Piaget Polo 79, and Otsuka Lotec No.6 as useful contrasts in what the awards recognize. A favorite is not necessarily a winner: the GPHG named 90 nominated timepieces and 20 prize winners in 2024.
How to read our GPHG 2024 favorites
The Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève’s official list spans 15 categories, from Ladies’ and Time Only to Tourbillon, Artistic Crafts, “Petite Aiguille,” and Challenge. The watches are being judged within different category contexts, so a practical travel watch and a highly ambitious calendar are not competing on one shared measure. The GPHG rules say the competition is open to all watch brands irrespective of nationality; that eligibility statement does not, by itself, establish anything about the geographic balance of the nominees.
Our selections are editorial favorites, not a claim that these are objectively the best watches or that each won. The official nominee list confirms category placement; the official prize list identifies laureates. See the 2024 nominated timepieces, 2024 prize list, and 2024 rules.
Our favorite nominated watches
Tudor Black Bay 58 GMT — “Petite Aiguille” nominee
The Tudor is a useful pick for readers drawn to the practical idea of a travel watch. Its nomination is established in the GPHG’s “Petite Aiguille” category; the available official material does not establish current price, availability, or independent performance. It makes a different kind of case than the technically ambitious and prize-winning watches below: a recognizable model in a category context rather than a winner’s laurel.

Grand Seiko Manual-winding Hi-Beat 36000 — Men’s nominee
This nomination broadens the shortlist beyond the Tudor’s travel-watch framing. The model name signals a focus on manual winding and a high-beat movement, but the official nominee listing establishes only that it was nominated in the Men’s category. It does not provide independent accuracy tests or a basis for ranking its performance against other watches.
MING 37.09 Bluefin — Sports Watch Prize winner
The MING is a clear example of why it matters to distinguish nominations from results: it was nominated and went on to win the Sports Watch Prize. It offers a useful contrast to the Tudor, which the official list places among “Petite Aiguille” nominees. The award result is official; it is not an independent test or a buyer’s ranking.

IWC Schaffhausen Portugieser Eternal Calendar — Aiguille d’Or winner
The Portugieser Eternal Calendar took the GPHG’s top “Aiguille d’Or” prize in 2024, making it the strongest award-result anchor on this shortlist. Its inclusion highlights the competition’s technical ambition alongside the more everyday-oriented category framing of the Tudor. The award material confirms the result, not independent performance or a comparative buyer verdict.
Piaget Polo 79 — Iconic Watch Prize winner
The Piaget won the Iconic Watch Prize, adding a design-led category perspective to a list otherwise anchored by sport, travel, and calendar complications. The prize is a useful reason to include it, but claims about its design history or the significance of its return require evidence beyond the GPHG result list.

Otsuka Lotec No.6 — Challenge Watch Prize winner
The Otsuka Lotec No.6 won the Challenge Watch Prize, showing that notable GPHG results were not confined to the headline “Aiguille d’Or.” It rounds out the selection with a winner from a separate category. The official list establishes its award, rather than a performance comparison with the other watches here.
Nominees and winners are not the same
The GPHG’s 2024 announcement counted 90 nominated timepieces and 20 prize winners. A nomination places a watch in the official field; winning is a separate result. In this selection, the Tudor and Grand Seiko are identified as nominees, while the MING, IWC, Piaget, and Otsuka Lotec are identified by their respective prize wins. The ceremony took place on 13 November 2024, and the nominated watches and winners were displayed at Musée Rath until 17 November 2024; these are historical event dates, not current exhibition information. The figures and dates come from the GPHG’s 2024 announcement.
