They are not scratch-proof or indestructible. Whether one is worth buying depends on the specific watch’s material, design, finish, price, and service support.
What are the advantages of a ceramic watch?
Resistance to everyday scratches and corrosion
Ceramic can hold up well to ordinary surface wear and resist corrosion. That can help a watch retain a clean appearance through routine use, though it does not make the surface immune to marks. Ceramic formulations vary, so one maker’s material claims should not be treated as a universal specification.
Low weight and a smooth feel
Rado and the American Ceramic Society describe ceramic as lightweight, while watchmakers also emphasize its smooth feel. The actual weight and comfort depend on the case, bracelet, clasp, and proportions of the particular watch—not just its material.
Distinctive finishes and colors
Ceramic can be made in colors and polished finishes that may be difficult to achieve with other watch materials. Appearance is a matter of preference, so compare the finish in person if possible and consider how it looks in different light.

What are the disadvantages?
Hard impacts can chip or break it
Scratch resistance is not the same as impact resistance. Citizen warns that ceramic may chip or break after a strong shock, such as striking a hard object or falling onto a hard floor. Rado likewise cautions that its watches are not indestructible. A ceramic component can therefore be a concern if you expect frequent knocks, drops, or rough handling.
Scratch-resistant does not mean scratch-proof
The exact resistance depends on the ceramic and what contacts it. Rado says its high-tech ceramic can be scratched by materials as hard as or harder than the ceramic. CHANEL notes that softer metals, including gold or titanium, can leave deposits on its ceramic that look like scratches; an apparent mark may not be damage to the ceramic itself.

Repairs and replacement parts are model-specific
There is no reliable general rule that ceramic watches cost more—or less—to repair than metal watches. Before buying, ask the maker or authorized service provider how it handles a chipped case or bracelet link, whether replacement parts are available, what the warranty covers, and what a repair would cost for that exact model.
How does ceramic compare with other watch materials?
There is no single answer for every ceramic watch: material formulation, construction, and design vary. Use these trade-offs as a checklist when comparing an individual ceramic watch with a metal alternative.

| Factor | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Everyday surface wear | Ceramic often resists ordinary scratches, but very hard materials can still mark it. Compare the maker’s material specification rather than assuming all ceramics perform alike. |
| Impact tolerance | A hard knock or fall can chip or break a ceramic component. Consider your routine and check the service options for the exact watch. |
| Weight and comfort | Ceramic is described as lightweight by Rado and the American Ceramic Society, but the watch’s dimensions and bracelet design affect how it feels on the wrist. |
| Finish and appearance | Ceramic offers distinctive color and polished finishes. Whether those suit you is subjective. |
| Ownership and service | Confirm warranty terms, repair process, part availability, and price with the maker or service provider. A universal repair-cost ranking is not established. |
What do the hardness figures actually mean?
Rado lists approximately 1,250 Vickers for its high-tech ceramic and around 1,750 Vickers for its Ceramos. These are figures for Rado’s named materials, not benchmarks for every ceramic watch. CHANEL claims its ceramic is seven times more resistant than steel; that is CHANEL’s claim about its own ceramic, not a general comparison that applies across brands. Hardness figures can help explain a maker’s material, but they do not by themselves establish how a whole watch will handle a fall or impact.
How should you care for a ceramic watch?
Follow the care instructions for your exact model; cleaning directions are not universal. For its ceramic bracelets, CHANEL advises checking that the crown is pushed in or screwed down, washing with soapy water and a soft-bristle brush, rinsing thoroughly, and drying with a soft cloth. CHANEL also explains that metal deposits may resemble scratches on ceramic. If a mark remains or you are unsure whether the surface is damaged, consult the maker or an authorized service provider rather than using an abrasive cleaner.

Is a ceramic watch worth it?
It may suit you if you value a lightweight feel, smooth finish, and good resistance to ordinary scratches, and you are comfortable with the possibility that a hard impact can chip or break a component. It may be a poor fit if you regularly expose watches to knocks or want a material whose damage and repair options you can assess more easily. Compare the exact watch’s construction, maker guidance, warranty, replacement-part availability, and price before deciding; there is no universal price or repair-cost advantage established for ceramic.
