Grand Seiko introduced the new manual-winding Calibre 9SA4 in these Evolution 9 dress watches in April 2024. It beats 10 times per second and offers an 80-hour power reserve when fully wound. The brand describes it as a thorough redesign and reconstruction of Calibre 9SA5. Their textured dial takes inspiration from white birch.

Best Spring Drive anniversary watch for everyday versatility: SBGA497
The Heritage Collection SBGA497 marks 20 years since Grand Seiko’s first Spring Drive watch. Its automatic 9R65 has a stated 72-hour power reserve; the 41 mm high-intensity titanium case and bracelet, 10-bar water resistance and time-only layout make it the straightforward anniversary pick for someone who does not need a GMT or chronograph.

Grand Seiko announced a 1,500-piece limited edition with availability beginning in March 2024. The brand’s UK release listed a recommended retail price of £5,950 at launch; that historical UK figure is not a current or worldwide price. The release describes Spring Drive’s seconds hand as moving in a “perfect glide motion,” reflecting the technology’s distinctive smooth sweep.

Best compact Spring Drive GMT: SBGE305
The Sport Collection SBGE305 combines automatic Spring Drive Calibre 9R66 with a GMT hand. Grand Seiko says its local hour hand can be set independently while the watch is running, a practical feature for changing time zones. It has a stainless-steel case and bracelet, ceramic bezel, 20-bar water resistance and a stated 72-hour reserve.

At 40.5 mm across, it is smaller in diameter than the SBGC275, although its 14.7 mm thickness is worth considering if you prefer a flatter profile. Grand Seiko announced 1,300 pieces, available from June 2024. Its Canadian launch recommended retail price was CAD 8,400; verify current local pricing rather than treating that as a present-day quote.

Best choice for chronograph and GMT functions: SBGC275
The SBGC275 pairs automatic Spring Drive Calibre 9R96 with both a GMT hand and a chronograph that measures up to 12 hours. The stated power reserve is 72 hours. Its high-intensity titanium case and bracelet, 20-bar water resistance and combination of timing functions make it the most function-packed sports watch on this list.

The trade-off is its substantial 44.5 mm diameter and 16.8 mm thickness. Those dimensions may suit someone seeking a prominent sports watch, but they are not a fit guarantee; try the watch on if case size is a deciding factor. Grand Seiko announced 700 pieces and July 2024 availability. The approximate U.S. recommended retail price at launch was USD 13,400.

Best 45GS re-creation: SLGW004 and SLGW005
These Heritage Collection models revisit the design lineage of the 45GS, first introduced in 1968. Both use hand-wound Hi-Beat Calibre 9SA4: 36,000 vibrations per hour (10 beats per second), a stated mean daily rate of +5 to -3 seconds, 80-hour power reserve and 47 jewels. Their 38.8 mm cases are 10.4 mm thick, with a box-shaped sapphire crystal, see-through case back and 3-bar water resistance.

The difference is in material and scarcity. SLGW004 has an 18k yellow-gold case and clasp and was limited to 200 pieces; it was announced as a boutique-exclusive. SLGW005 uses stainless steel for its case and clasp and was limited to 1,200 pieces. Grand Seiko said both would be available from November 2024. The New Zealand launch recommended retail price stated for SLGW005 was NZD 16,000; the release gave no New Zealand price for SLGW004. Best specialist high-horology pick: Kodo SLGT005
The Masterpiece Collection SLGT005 continues Grand Seiko’s Kodo Constant-force Tourbillon line with a daybreak-inspired design. Its hand-wound 9ST1 brings a tourbillon and constant-force mechanism together as one unit on a single axis. Grand Seiko states a 72-hour power reserve, with constant-force operation for 50 hours, and an accuracy of +5 to -3 seconds per day when static for 48 hours.
The 43.8 mm case combines Platinum 950 and Brilliant Hard Titanium and has 10-bar water resistance. This is a specialist horology choice, not an everyday value alternative to the other watches here: Grand Seiko announced 20 pieces and boutique availability beginning in December 2024. Its approximate U.S. recommended retail price at launch was USD 395,000. The original Kodo received the 2022 Chronometry Prize at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève.
