These are editorial picks by role, not an objective ranking or the result of comparative testing.
How to choose among IWC’s 2024 Portugieser watches
Start with the complication you will actually use, then weigh case material, dial, and size. A calendar specialist, a chronograph, and a time-and-date automatic serve different preferences; there is no single best choice for every wrist or collection.

Portugieser Eternal Calendar: the technical showpiece
The Eternal Calendar is the standout for readers interested in calendar mechanics. IWC introduced it at Watches and Wonders Geneva on 9 April 2024 and described it as its first secular perpetual calendar. The manufacturer says its mechanism accounts for exceptions in the Gregorian calendar’s leap-year cycle. [IWC’s 2024 announcement]
IWC also states that the moon-phase display is mathematically accurate for 45 million years. That is the manufacturer’s specification, not an independently verified test result. Choose it for its calendar engineering and technical presence, rather than assuming that “perpetual” means it will require no adjustment in every possible circumstance.
Portugieser Chronograph: the balanced complication
The Chronograph is the most straightforward pick for someone who wants a stopwatch function alongside the familiar Portugieser layout. IWC introduced three versions in its 9 April 2024 launch:

This strap is suitable for all watches with a straight interface. As long as the strap interface is the right size, it can be installed.
- IW371624: stainless steel case with a Dune dial.
- IW371625: 18-carat 5N gold case with an Obsidian black dial.
- IW371626: 18-carat white-gold case with a Horizon Blue dial.
All three use IWC-manufactured calibre 69355, according to the company. The stopped-minutes counter sits at 12 o’clock and the small-seconds display at 6 o’clock; an inner flange carries a quarter-second scale. The reference numbers matter: these are not simply three dial colors on an otherwise identical steel watch. The case material changes between the Dune, Obsidian, and Horizon Blue versions.

Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 44: a traditional calendar in gold
For a conventional perpetual-calendar choice, IWC re-engineered the Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 44 for 2024 and announced four versions. Two use 18-carat white gold, with Horizon Blue and Dune dials; the other two use 18-carat Armor Gold, with Obsidian and Silver Moon dials. This is the choice for someone specifically drawn to a calendar complication and precious-metal case, rather than a less complicated daily-wear design. The “44” refers to the model’s size designation; it alone cannot establish how the watch will fit, since thickness, lug geometry, and individual wrist shape also matter.

Portugieser Automatic 42 or 40: a cleaner, simpler option
The Automatic 42 and Automatic 40 provide a less complicated alternative to the calendar and chronograph models. IWC’s 2024 announcement describes a reworked case construction with a slimmer side profile and double-box sapphire crystals. The dials also have 15 layers of transparent lacquer. Both families use IWC-manufactured calibre 82200 with a Pellaton winding system. IWC gives the movement a 60-hour power reserve. The 42 and 40 designations offer two size options, but a try-on is the practical way to judge fit.
Which 2024 Portugieser fits your priorities?
- Choose the Eternal Calendar if the secular-calendar mechanism and its moon-phase display are the main attraction.
- Choose the Chronograph if you want a chronograph and prefer to select among steel, 18-carat 5N gold, and 18-carat white gold executions.
- Choose the Perpetual Calendar 44 if a traditional perpetual-calendar model in a gold case is the priority.
- Choose the Automatic 42 or 40 if you want a simpler automatic watch and would rather choose between two size designations than add a chronograph or perpetual calendar.
