The important 2026 qualification is that Oura now identifies Ring 5 as its newest generation, so Ring 4 makes most sense as a discounted, broader-size option rather than the default current model.
What Oura announced
Oura’s announcement covered both hardware and software. Ring 4 launched in six finishes—Brushed Silver, Gold, Rose Gold, Silver, Stealth and Black—and continued to support iOS and Android. Gen3 remained available until inventory ran out.

What Smart Sensing actually does
Smart Sensing is not presented as a diagnostic artificial-intelligence system. Oura describes it as an adaptive sensing algorithm combined with a new optical layout.

More possible signal paths
Ring 4 provides 18 optical signal pathways around the inner circumference, compared with eight on Gen3, according to Oura. The algorithm evaluates signal quality and selects the pathway most likely to produce a usable reading for the wearer and activity.
Why the approach matters
Finger anatomy, skin tone, body composition, temperature and ring rotation can all change how light-based sensors contact tissue. A fixed sensor position may therefore work well for one person but poorly for another. Smart Sensing is intended to compensate for that variation rather than relying on a single contact point.
The extra pathways do not make every reading automatically accurate. Fit still matters, and Oura recommends wearing the sensors toward the palm side of the finger.

What improved accuracy means—and what it does not
Oura’s headline numbers came from a 60-person sleep-clinic comparison in August 2024 between Ring 4 and Gen3. They are company-reported launch results, not broad independent validation against a clinical reference for every user and measurement.

The primary launch source is Oura’s announcement and study summary. The evidence supports a claim of better signal continuity and Oura-reported improvements over Gen3; it does not establish diagnostic-grade performance, universal gains across sleep staging, HRV, temperature or activity detection, or equal results for every finger and skin tone.
Hardware, comfort and sensors
Ring 4 uses a fully titanium construction and replaces Gen3’s raised interior sensor domes with recessed sensors in a smooth, round interior. The flatter inside is primarily a comfort improvement, while the surrounding sensor layout enables the Smart Sensing strategy. Oura does not establish that the recessed shape alone caused the accuracy gains.

What the sensors measure
- Red and infrared LEDs for blood-oxygen measurements.
- Green and infrared photoplethysmography sensors for continuous heart rate and HRV, plus respiration-rate measurements during sleep.
- A digital temperature sensor for changes and trends in average body temperature.
- An accelerometer for movement and activity.
Temperature readings are trends rather than conventional clinical core-temperature measurements. SpO2, heart rate, HRV, sleep stages and breathing-disturbance data are wellness measurements and should not be used alone to diagnose illness, arrhythmia or sleep apnea.

Ring 4 expanded the range to sizes 4–15. That can make it viable for fingers outside Gen3’s range, but the generations do not share identical sizing. Use an Oura Ring 4 sizing kit even if you already own Gen3.

- Align the sensors toward the palm side for the intended fit.
- Allow for swelling, temperature changes and weight changes.
- A secure fit reduces rotation, although Smart Sensing does not eliminate rotation entirely.
- Check availability before choosing a finish or size; Oura says inventory varies.
The redesigned app
The app was reorganized into Today, Vitals and My Health. The redesign was released for Oura members regardless of ring generation, so it was not an exclusive Ring 4 hardware feature. Smart Sensing, the new sensor arrangement, titanium interior and expanded sizing were hardware changes; the interface refresh could also benefit Gen3 owners.

Oura currently lists Membership at $5.99 per month or $69.99 per year, with the first month free for new members. Membership supplies the broader interpretation layer for sleep, readiness, stress, activity, heart-health and women’s-health insights rather than leaving the ring as a fully featured one-time purchase.
Using the $349 launch price and the current annual fee, an illustrative first-year total is about $418.99 before tax after the included month. That is a calculation, not a current Ring 4 retail quote; verify the live hardware price and regional terms before ordering.

Should a Gen3 owner upgrade?
The upgrade is most compelling when
- Raised sensor bumps make Gen3 uncomfortable for continuous wear.
- You regularly see heart-rate gaps.
- You need a size from 4–15 that Gen3 did not offer.
- Your ring rotates frequently and you want adaptive signal-path selection.
- A remaining Ring 4 unit is substantially cheaper than Ring 5.
Keeping Gen3 may be sensible when
- Your comfort and data continuity are already satisfactory.
- You expect a completely new health category rather than refinement.
- You do not want an ongoing membership fee.
- Your priority is live exercise data, GPS or on-device controls, where a smartwatch is better suited.
Contemporary coverage described Ring 4 as a refinement rather than a reinvention. Its strongest case is improved comfort, fit flexibility and potentially more continuous sensing—not a wholesale change in what an Oura ring is.
Ring 4 in the 2026 product landscape
Oura’s support page, updated July 27, 2026, identifies Oura Ring 5 as the newest generation. Oura describes Ring 5 as 40% smaller by volume than Ring 4, with typical battery life of 6–9 days and sizes 6–13.

At launch, Oura Ring 4 was a meaningful engineering refinement: 18 adaptive signal pathways, a smoother titanium interior, more sizes and company-reported improvements over Gen3 in overnight oxygen readings and heart-rate continuity. Those percentages should remain attributed to Oura’s 60-person sleep-clinic comparison, not treated as universal clinical proof. In 2026, buy Ring 4 when the discount or size range is compelling and you accept the membership; choose Ring 5 when you want Oura’s current generation.
