Oura Ring 4 review: The kindest smart ring, and still a great buy in 2026

The Oura Ring 4 remains one of the best smart rings for sleep, recovery, stress, and discreet 24/7 wear. This review explains its comfort improvements, sensors, battery, subscription cost, exercise limits, medical caveats, and whether it still makes sense beside Oura Ring 5 in 2026.

Short answer: Oura Ring 4 is still an excellent smart ring for sleep, recovery, stress, temperature trends, and comfortable all-day wear. Its recessed sensors make it kinder to wear than earlier Oura designs, and its app remains one of the most polished in the category. But after Oura Ring 5 launched in June 2026, Ring 4 is no longer the newest or universally best Oura ring. It is the smarter buy when you need sizes 4–5 or 14–15, find a substantial discount, or prefer its established design.

Verdict: The Oura Ring 4 remains one of the best smart rings for sleep, recovery, stress, temperature trends, and discreet 24/7 wear. Its smooth interior, mature app, and strong interpretation of overnight data make it unusually easy to live with. But the original title needs a 2026 qualification: Oura Ring 5 launched in June 2026, so Ring 4 is no longer the newest Oura ring or the automatic best choice for every buyer.

Ring 4 is now most compelling when it is meaningfully cheaper than Ring 5, when you need a size outside Ring 5’s narrower range, or when you prefer its established design and software ecosystem. The subscription, lack of a screen, limited live-workout usefulness, and vulnerability to scratches are the main reasons not to buy it.

Best for: Sleep and recovery tracking, discreet all-day wear, stress and temperature trends, and people who dislike smartwatch notifications.

What changed with Ring 4?

Ring 4 launched on October 3, 2024 with two changes that matter more in daily use than a long list of new specifications: Smart Sensing and a smoother interior.

Oura’s Smart Sensing system dynamically selects among multiple signal paths to adapt to the wearer’s finger. In practical terms, the ring is designed to maintain data collection as fit, skin contact, and conditions change while using power more efficiently. It is not a feature that produces a new number you will constantly check; its value is that the ring can collect more consistently without requiring you to position it perfectly every night.

The second change is easier to feel. Earlier Oura designs used sensor domes that protruded into the finger. Ring 4 recesses the sensors into the body of the ring, creating a noticeably smoother interior. That is the main reason the word “kindest” fits this review: it is a comfort and usability judgment, not a medical claim. The ring is less likely to remind you that you are wearing a sensor while sleeping, working at a desk, or moving through a normal day.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The standard ring is approximately 7.9 mm wide and 2.88 mm thick, with a weight of roughly 3.3 to 5.2 grams depending on size. Ring 4 Ceramic is approximately 3.51 mm thick and weighs about 5.1 to 8.1 grams. Ceramic is therefore not the same lightweight proposition as the standard titanium version.

Fit, sizing, and materials

Ring 4 is available in sizes 4 through 15, which is one of its most important advantages over Ring 5. The newer ring is currently limited to sizes 6 through 13. That makes Ring 4 the more inclusive option for smaller and larger fingers, assuming you can still find the finish and size you want.

Do not use a Ring 5 sizing kit to choose a Ring 4. Oura states that the generations use different sizing, so order or borrow the correct Oura Ring 4 sizing kit before committing to a size. Wear the ring with the sensor side facing the palm side of your finger. A close, comfortable fit is important because the optical sensors need reliable skin contact, but it should not feel tight, numb, or difficult to remove.

The standard Ring 4 uses titanium inside and out. Its finish uses PVD or DLC coating depending on the color and model. Ring 4 Ceramic uses a zirconia-ceramic exterior and is thicker and heavier. The material choice affects appearance and weight, but neither version should be treated as scratch-proof.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the best chance of reducing cosmetic wear, Oura recommends the non-dominant hand. Avoid wearing another ring immediately beside it, since adjacent rings can create pressure, trap moisture, and irritate the skin. If you have a job or hobby involving repeated contact with metal, stone, ceramic, or rough surfaces, the practical advice is to remove Ring 4 rather than assume its coating will absorb the punishment.

What Ring 4 measures

Ring 4 combines several sensor types:

  • Red and infrared LEDs for blood-oxygen sensing.
  • Green and infrared photoplethysmography sensors for heart-rate and heart-rate-variability measurements.
  • A digital temperature sensor for temperature trends.
  • An accelerometer for movement and activity data.

With an active membership, the Oura app turns those signals into sleep analysis, 24/7 heart-rate tracking, blood-oxygen information, temperature monitoring, stress features, automatic activity detection, cardiovascular metrics, metabolic-health features, and women’s-health features. The exact availability of features can vary by geography, software version, integrations, and membership status.

The important distinction is between signals and interpretation. Ring 4 measures or estimates physiological and movement data; the app then organizes it into scores, trends, and explanations. Its strength is not giving you a tiny dashboard on your finger. Its strength is showing how sleep, resting heart rate, HRV, temperature, activity, and stress fit together over time.

Sleep and recovery are Ring 4’s best features

If sleep is your priority, Ring 4 has one of the strongest cases in the smart-ring market. Independent reviewers have consistently praised its sleep-stage estimates, oxygen-saturation information, nighttime heart rate, HRV, sleep timing, and recovery guidance. The experience is particularly useful for recognizing patterns: a late bedtime that repeatedly harms readiness, an elevated resting heart rate after hard training, or a run of poor sleep that you might otherwise dismiss one morning at a time.

The app broadly organizes its guidance around sleep, readiness, activity, stress, and longer-term health trends. That structure is more useful than a raw list of nightly measurements for many people. Rather than asking you to interpret every HRV fluctuation, it gives the data context and encourages you to look at the direction of change.

There is meaningful validation, but it needs to be described carefully. Oura reports that a peer-reviewed study in Sensors compared its four-stage sleep-classification algorithm with polysomnography and found 79% agreement. That supports the claim that the system can identify broad sleep-stage patterns. It does not make every nightly REM or deep-sleep estimate exact, and it does not make Ring 4 equivalent to a clinical sleep study. The research was promoted by Oura, so it should be treated as company-sponsored validation rather than proof from wholly independent testing.

The most defensible conclusion is that Ring 4 is useful for tracking sleep duration, timing, restfulness, nighttime heart rate, HRV, oxygen-related trends, and recovery patterns. It is not a diagnostic device, and it cannot replace polysomnography or a clinician’s assessment of a suspected sleep disorder.

Readiness, stress, temperature, and women’s health

Readiness is where Ring 4 becomes more than a sleep tracker. The ring uses overnight and daily signals to help you judge whether your body appears ready for normal activity, extra training, or more recovery. This is best used as a trend and decision aid, not as an instruction to obey a single score. An unusually low score can be a reason to examine sleep, illness symptoms, alcohol, training load, or stress; it is not a diagnosis.

Stress features add another layer by helping identify periods of physiological strain and recovery during the day. Because the ring has no screen, the feedback is not an on-the-spot alert on your finger. You generally review the patterns in the app, where the value comes from seeing recurring stress and recovery periods across days and weeks.

Temperature trends and cycle features can be useful for people who want a passive record of changes over time. Oura also supports cycle and fertile-window features, including the Natural Cycles integration in supported markets and configurations. Availability, eligibility, and any separate service requirements depend on geography and current program terms.

These features should not be described as detecting infertility, diagnosing illness, or guaranteeing contraception or pregnancy outcomes. Ring 4 can provide data and algorithmic interpretations that a user may choose to discuss with a qualified clinician. It does not turn those interpretations into medical conclusions.

Oura has also discussed metabolic-health services and a Dexcom-linked ecosystem. That does not mean Ring 4 measures glucose continuously. A Dexcom-linked metabolic-health service is a separate ecosystem or integration consideration, not evidence that the ring itself is a glucose monitor.

Exercise tracking: useful after the workout, limited during it

Ring 4 can automatically detect many activities and can record workout heart rate. That makes it a useful passive companion for people who want exercise included in their overall activity and recovery picture without starting a workout on a watch every time.

It is less convincing as a serious training instrument. A ring has no display for checking pace, heart-rate zones, elapsed time, route, or intervals while you are moving. Automatic detection can also miss slower, low-motion, or unusual activities. Even when data is recorded, checking it on a phone is less convenient than glancing at a dedicated sports watch.

For runners, cyclists, and structured-training athletes, Ring 4 is best paired with a running watch, cycling computer, or smartwatch. Let the dedicated device provide immediate workout feedback and let Oura provide the continuous sleep, recovery, stress, and temperature context afterward. If you only need general activity trends and do not want another screen, Ring 4 is a better fit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comfort and durability

The recessed sensors and low-profile, screen-free design make Ring 4 particularly comfortable for sleeping. There is no bright display to activate in bed, no vibration motor competing with your alarm, and no watch body pressing against your wrist. The ring is also discreet enough for formal and professional settings where a smartwatch may feel conspicuous.

However, comfort is not the same as indestructibility. Oura warns that normal use can produce scratches and that the ring can scratch softer metal or other objects. Weightlifting and activities involving metal, ceramic, or stone are especially poor use cases because the ring can be squeezed or dragged against hard surfaces. Removing it during those activities is sensible, even if doing so creates a gap in the data.

Moisture can also become a comfort issue when another ring sits beside Ring 4. Clean and dry the skin and the ring if you notice irritation, and do not wear adjacent rings so tightly that moisture becomes trapped between them.

A third-party compatible smart-ring protector may sound appealing if scratches worry you, but this is not a required purchase and fit is not universal. A protector must not interfere with the recessed sensors, charging fit, or comfort. Verify compatibility with the exact Ring 4 size and model before considering one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Battery life, charging, and water resistance

Current Oura support documentation rates typical Ring 4 battery life at 5 to 8 days. The launch announcement advertised up to eight days, but that is a ceiling rather than a promise. Ring size, settings, feature configuration, activity, battery age, and environmental conditions can all change endurance. Larger rings may have more battery capacity, but buyers should rely on the stated range rather than assume a particular number of days.

Current charging guidance says a charge typically takes 20 to 80 minutes. The original launch material described charging in up to 120 minutes depending on the starting battery level, so the newer support specification is the more useful figure for current buying advice.

The charger is size-specific. If you are an existing owner who wants a charger for a second location or needs to replace a lost one, check the exact model and size before ordering an Oura Ring 4 replacement charger. A charger made for a different ring generation or size may not fit correctly.

Ring 4 is water-resistant to 100 meters or 328 feet. It is suitable for showering, swimming, sauna use, and recreational water activities. Oura does not recommend scuba diving or keeping the ring submerged for more than 12 hours. Water resistance also does not protect the ring from every form of impact, abrasion, or trapped moisture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Oura app and compatible phones

The app is the reason to choose Oura over a generic activity ring. It turns a large amount of passive data into a relatively understandable health narrative, with daily scores and longer-term trends rather than a constant demand for attention. Sleep, readiness, activity, stress, and health trends are presented as connected parts of the same picture.

Ring 4 works with phones running iOS 16 or later or Android 11 or later with Google Play services. The phone must support Bluetooth 5.0. Oura also supports integrations with third-party health and wellness services, including Strava, and its product information describes an ecosystem of more than 40 apps. Integration availability can change, so check the current requirements for any particular service before buying specifically for it.

The lack of a screen is both the ring’s defining advantage and its clearest limitation. Ring 4 does not provide a smart alarm and does not use on-device sounds, lights, vibrations, or other alert functions. It can send notifications to your phone, but the ring itself is not a smartwatch and cannot replace one if you want calls, live navigation, timers, or immediate workout feedback.

The subscription changes the value equation

Ring 4 launched at $349. Oura’s current membership price is $5.99 per month or $69.99 per year, and the current membership page says new members receive the first month free. Promotions, regional pricing, and retailer pricing can change, so do not assume that the launch price or any advertised discount is still available when you read this.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical first-year calculation is:

  • Ring purchase price
  • Plus up to $69.99 for an annual membership, subject to the introductory month and applicable promotions or terms

The membership is not a minor add-on. It is what unlocks the comprehensive app experience and the broader collection of health metrics and insights. If you buy Ring 4 without intending to use the membership, you should evaluate the product as a much more limited proposition than the reviews praising Oura’s software.

The value is strongest for someone who will wear the ring every day and regularly use sleep, recovery, stress, temperature, and trend features. It is weakest for someone who wants step counting and occasional activity records from a one-time purchase, or for someone who needs live exercise metrics that the membership cannot solve.

Oura Ring 4 versus Oura Ring 5

Ring 5 launched in June 2026 as Oura’s newest generation. Oura says it is 40% smaller by volume than Ring 4, measures approximately 6.09 mm wide and 2.28 mm thick, and is available only in sizes 6 through 13.

Choose Ring 4 when… Choose Ring 5 when…
You need size 4, 5, 14, or 15. Your required size is available between 6 and 13.
You find Ring 4 substantially cheaper than the newer model. The prices are close and you want the newest hardware.
You like the established Ring 4 design and mature software ecosystem. You place a high value on the thinner, smaller-volume design.
You want the best value from remaining inventory. You prefer a product with a longer expected period of current-generation support and availability.

Ring 5 does not automatically make Ring 4 a bad purchase. The size difference alone can settle the decision. Ring 4 covers sizes 4 through 15, while Ring 5 covers 6 through 13, so the older ring may be the only Oura option that fits comfortably. Conversely, if both generations fit and cost about the same, Ring 5 is the more future-facing choice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a generation-specific sizing kit for whichever ring you are considering. Do not assume a Ring 4 size will transfer directly to Ring 5.

Who should buy the Oura Ring 4?

Buy it if you:

  • Care more about sleep, recovery, stress, temperature, and long-term trends than about a live display.
  • Want a discreet ring that is easier to sleep in than a watch.
  • Need a size outside Ring 5’s current 6–13 range.
  • Find Ring 4 meaningfully discounted compared with Ring 5.
  • Want Oura’s mature app, health explanations, and third-party integrations.
  • Prefer not to wear a smartwatch constantly.

If those points describe you and the price is right, the Oura Ring 4 remains a highly capable purchase rather than an obsolete one.

Skip it or reconsider if you:

  • Refuse recurring subscriptions or want the full experience from a one-time purchase.
  • Need live heart-rate zones, pace, route, intervals, or other workout feedback on your wrist or finger.
  • Want a smart alarm or on-device alerts.
  • Need clinical-grade measurements or a device that diagnoses a condition.
  • Frequently lift weights, handle metal, or work around rough surfaces and do not want to remove the ring.
  • Can buy Ring 5 at a similar price in a suitable size.

How to get the most from Ring 4

  1. Confirm the generation first. If you are comparing clearance stock with Ring 5, make sure the listing is specifically for Ring 4.
  2. Use the correct sizing kit. Wear the test size long enough to judge sleep comfort, swelling, and skin contact. The sensor side should face your palm.
  3. Budget for membership. Include the recurring fee in the first-year and long-term cost rather than comparing only ring prices.
  4. Wear it consistently. Oura’s value comes from trends, so frequent removal reduces the context behind readiness, sleep, stress, and temperature insights.
  5. Remove it for high-friction tasks. Weightlifting and contact with hard materials are more likely to cause scratches, pressure, or irritation.
  6. Pair it with a sports watch if necessary. Use Ring 4 for continuous recovery context and a dedicated device for live training feedback.
  7. Interpret health features cautiously. Treat scores and deviations as prompts for reflection or a conversation with a clinician, never as diagnoses.

Final recommendation

The Oura Ring 4 is still a polished, comfortable, and unusually useful wellness wearable. Its strongest qualities are the ones that matter every night: a smooth interior, unobtrusive form, reliable-feeling sleep and recovery trends, and an app that explains data rather than simply displaying it.

It is not the newest Oura ring anymore, and that changes the buying question. In 2026, Ring 4 makes the most sense as a value and sizing play. Buy it if you need its broader 4–15 size range, find a substantial discount, or prefer its established form factor. Pay for Ring 5 instead when the newer, slimmer design is important and the price difference is small.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the right owner, Ring 4 is arguably the kindest smart ring because it asks so little of you: put it on, sleep in it, and review the patterns later. Just remember that comfort does not remove the subscription, scratches, exercise limitations, or medical caveats.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Oura Ring 4 require a subscription?

The full Oura experience depends heavily on membership. Oura currently lists membership at $5.99 per month or $69.99 per year, with the first month free for new members according to its membership information. Include that recurring cost when comparing Ring 4 with other wearables.

Can Oura Ring 4 replace a smartwatch or running watch?

No. Ring 4 is a screen-free wellness ring, not a smartwatch. It does not provide a smart alarm or on-device sounds, lights, vibrations, or other alerts, and it is not designed for checking pace or heart-rate zones during a workout.

Is Oura Ring 4 a medical device?

No. Ring 4 can identify trends in sleep, heart rate, HRV, temperature, activity, and stress, but those are consumer-wellness measurements and algorithmic interpretations. It does not diagnose illness, infertility, or sleep disorders, and it cannot replace a clinical sleep study.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How is Oura Ring 4 sizing different from Ring 5?

Ring 4 is available in sizes 4 through 15, while Ring 5 is currently limited to sizes 6 through 13. Use the sizing kit made for the specific generation you plan to buy, and position the sensor side toward your palm.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Oura Ring 4 remains an excellent sleep-and-recovery ring, but not an unqualified best-in-class winner after the June 2026 arrival of Ring 5. Its best reasons to buy now are a lower price, the wider size range, and Oura’s mature software. If you need live workout data, a no-subscription product, or a clinical device, choose something else.
