Yes—if it solves a problem your Apple Watch has not. The Oura Ring 5 is a useful complement for Apple Watch owners who want comfortable overnight wear, longer battery life, and more explicit interpretation of sleep, recovery, stress, and health trends. It is not an upgrade to the Apple Watch, and it is a poor second purchase if you already sleep comfortably in your watch, dislike subscriptions, or mainly want better workout tracking.
The practical split is simple: use the Apple Watch for workouts, GPS, notifications, safety, and active daytime use; use Oura for screenless continuous wear, sleep, readiness, and recovery context. Whether that division justifies at least $399 for the ring plus a recurring membership depends on how much you will act on the additional information.

The short version: buy it only if your Apple Watch leaves a real gap
Buy Oura Ring 5 alongside an Apple Watch if you:
- Find the Apple Watch uncomfortable or inconvenient to wear overnight.
- Want a screenless wearable with fewer distractions.
- Lose sleep data because your watch needs daily charging.
- Care more about sleep, recovery, and stress trends than live workout metrics.
- Want Oura’s interpretation and coaching rather than another set of raw charts.
- Accept the $5.99 monthly or $69.99 annual U.S. membership.
Keep using the Apple Watch alone if you:
- Already sleep comfortably in it and find its sleep and Vitals features sufficient.
- Primarily need workouts, GPS, communications, safety, or cellular connectivity.
- Do not want to pay for a second health-data subscription.
- Dislike wearing rings during weightlifting, manual work, or exercise.
- Are unlikely to change your behavior based on readiness or recovery guidance.
What Oura Ring 5 adds to an Apple Watch
The Oura proposition is not that it replaces the Apple Watch. It is that the two devices can perform different jobs.
| Job | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Live workout data | Apple Watch | It has a display, workout controls, built-in GPS, and live pace, distance, and heart-rate information. |
| Sleep and overnight wear | Oura Ring 5 | It is screenless, lighter and smaller than its predecessor according to Oura, and advertises up to six to nine days of battery life depending on size and use. |
| Recovery interpretation | Oura Ring 5 | Its Sleep, Readiness, Activity, Stress, and Resilience views turn multiple signals into explicit trends and guidance. |
| Notifications, apps, and safety | Apple Watch | Oura has no screen, notifications, GPS, cellular service, or smartwatch interface. |
| One-device simplicity | Apple Watch | Buying a ring adds another device, another charging routine, and another subscription. |
That makes Oura most compelling when the unresolved problem is consistent passive tracking, not a lack of sensors. A ring that you wear through the night and on watch-free days may produce a more complete personal baseline than a watch that regularly comes off to charge. But a second device is only useful if its interpretation changes what you do.

Oura Ring 5 hardware and wearing experience
Oura Ring 5 is a screenless titanium ring. There are no notifications, apps, buttons, or live workout controls to distract you. Oura advertises the new model as 40% thinner, lighter, and smaller than its predecessor, with more than 50 health metrics. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent measurements.
Oura advertises battery life of up to six to nine days, depending on ring size and usage. That is a major practical difference from the Apple Watch Series 11, which Apple lists at up to 24 hours of standard battery life or up to 38 hours in Low Power Mode. Real endurance depends on settings, feature use, activity, battery age, temperature, and fit.
The ring is water-resistant and designed for continuous wear, but “continuous” does not mean comfortable for everyone. Finger size changes with heat, exercise, travel, sodium intake, and pregnancy. A sizing kit or careful sizing process is more important than choosing a finish. A ring that feels fine in the evening may feel tight after a workout or overnight.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →It can also be inconvenient during weightlifting, gripping equipment, manual work, or activities where a hard ring could catch or press into the finger. Scratches and finish wear are another normal risk. If you already remove rings for work or training, Oura’s all-day data advantage will be reduced.
Charging is handled with the included ring charger. Oura’s store lists a Ring 5 Charging Case at $99 and a standard Ring 5 charger at $59. The case may be useful for travel, but it is an additional cost rather than an essential reason to buy the ring.
Current U.S. product and accessory details are listed on Oura’s Ring 5 product page and Oura’s store.
Sleep tracking: the strongest reason to add Oura
Apple Watch sleep tracking has become increasingly capable, so Oura’s advantage should not be described simply as “more accurate.” The useful distinction is between measurement, comfort, completeness, and interpretation.

Both devices can contribute information about sleep duration and timing, overnight heart rate, heart-rate variability, respiratory patterns, blood oxygen, and temperature-related signals. Oura uses a finger rather than the wrist, while Apple Watch uses wrist-based sensing. Neither location automatically makes every metric better in every circumstance.

Oura’s strongest difference is the way the app presents those signals. Its Sleep and Readiness experiences are built around scores, trends, contributors, and suggested actions. For someone trying to understand whether late exercise, irregular bedtimes, alcohol, illness, or accumulated fatigue affects their sleep, that interpretation can be more immediately useful than navigating several Apple Health charts.
Oura also has a practical advantage if the watch is frequently charging. A device that remains on the finger for several nights can provide more consistent overnight coverage. The advantage disappears if you only wear the ring occasionally, or if its fit makes you remove it.
Apple Watch remains a credible sleep-tracking option for people who are comfortable wearing it overnight. Its advantages include integration with Apple’s Health ecosystem, sleep schedules, sleep-related notifications, and the convenience of using a device you already own. Independent comparisons have generally found Oura’s sleep and recovery presentation especially polished while acknowledging that Apple has narrowed the gap.
Neither product should be treated as a diagnostic sleep laboratory. Sleep stages are estimates, and sleep-apnea-related information or oxygen trends are prompts to investigate—not a diagnosis. Suspected sleep apnea or another medical condition requires clinical assessment. See the caution in Tom’s Guide’s comparison.
Readiness and recovery: where the complement makes the most sense
Oura’s Readiness Score combines recent sleep, activity, resting heart rate, HRV, temperature trends, and other signals into a daily recovery-oriented view. The intended use is straightforward: decide whether today is better suited to a hard session, easier movement, or more rest.
This is a different job from recording a workout. Apple Watch is excellent at telling you what happened during a run, ride, swim, interval session, or gym workout. Oura’s product proposition is to put that activity into a broader multi-day context alongside overnight signals.
That does not prove Oura’s recommendation is medically superior, or that its score is an objective measurement of your health. A proprietary score is useful only if its patterns are understandable and its advice changes your decisions. If you will ignore a low Readiness Score and train exactly as planned, the feature is mostly another notification.

Stress, resilience, and longer-term trends
For an Apple Watch owner, Oura can add a more unified wellness narrative around daytime stress, recovery, resting heart rate, HRV, temperature deviations, and longer-term Resilience trends. Its cardiovascular-age and cardio-capacity features, along with women’s-health and cycle-tracking tools, may also matter to particular users.
The important qualification is that these are wellness guidance and trend-detection tools. A higher score does not prove better health, and a low score does not identify a particular disease. Temperature deviations can have many causes, while HRV varies naturally between individuals and across circumstances.
The value is behavioral: noticing a sustained change, connecting it with sleep or workload, and deciding whether to adjust habits or discuss the pattern with a professional. It is not a substitute for medical testing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFitness and workouts: keep the Apple Watch in charge
Oura Ring 5 is not the better workout computer. It has no display, built-in GPS, or live controls. It can automatically detect some activities and contribute activity information, but it is not the natural choice for someone who needs real-time pace, distance, heart rate, intervals, navigation, or workout controls.
Apple Watch remains the stronger primary fitness device for most iPhone users. The current Series 11 listing includes GPS, optional cellular connectivity, workout sensors, safety features, and a display for live information. It is better suited to running, cycling, swimming, interval training, and structured gym sessions.
The most sensible two-device routine is therefore: record the workout on Apple Watch; use Oura, if you want it, to understand how that workout fits into sleep and recovery. Buying Oura in the hope that it will improve live workout tracking is likely to produce disappointment.
Using Oura with Apple Health
Oura offers Apple Health integration on iOS. Oura states that Gen 3 and later rings require an active membership for the integration. To connect it:

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open the Oura app.
- Tap the menu icon in the upper-left corner of the Today screen.
- Tap Settings.
- Under Data sharing, tap Apple Health.
- Enable Connect to Health.
- Optionally enable Save Mindful Minutes to Health.
- Review permissions at iPhone Settings → Health → Data Access & Devices → Oura.
Apple Health is a data hub, not a promise that every metric moves in both directions. Oura can write selected information to Health and read selected information from it, subject to permissions. If both devices write similar categories, review source priority in Apple Health rather than assuming the values will be merged perfectly.

Oura specifically notes that its steps do not move the Apple Watch Stand ring because of an Apple limitation. Syncing also does not remove the membership requirement. The complete eligibility and permissions details are in Oura’s Apple Health support article.
Apple Health integration is most useful when you choose a primary source for each category. For example, Apple Watch can be the preferred source for workouts and active heart rate, while Oura can be the preferred source for sleep or readiness. More data is not automatically better if it creates conflicting totals.

Apple Watch Series 11 starts at $399 for an aluminum GPS model, although cellular, larger, and titanium configurations cost more.

These totals are arithmetic based on the listed U.S. prices: $399 plus $69.99 for each membership year. They are not a manufacturer quote. At the $499 finish price, add $100 to each hardware-inclusive total.
The subscription is technically optional, but that description hides the practical issue. Without membership, most of the detailed sleep, stress, activity, and health-trend experience disappears. Oura Ring 5 is therefore not a conventional buy-once tracker. The recurring fee should be part of the purchase decision from the start.
Accuracy: separate the sensor from the score
There are three different questions to ask:
- Sensor accuracy: how closely a heart-rate, temperature, oxygen, or sleep estimate matches a reference method.
- Feature usefulness: whether the information helps you make better decisions.
- Score validity: whether a proprietary Sleep or Readiness score represents your individual health or recovery accurately.
Oura advertises 99% heart-rate accuracy compared with ECG and 95% sleep-staging accuracy compared with a clinical sleep lab for Ring 5. Those are Oura’s claims, and they should not be generalized into a claim that the ring is “clinically accurate” across every metric or user.
Performance varies with fit, skin contact, movement, firmware, feature settings, the particular metric, and the reference method. Independent reviews have generally praised Oura’s sleep and recovery insights while identifying the subscription and weaker workout functionality as major limitations. See Wareable’s review, NBC Select’s review, and Forbes Vetted’s comparison.
Important ownership trade-offs
Wearing it only at night
Night-only wear can improve sleep coverage, but it weakens Oura’s all-day activity and readiness picture. If you buy the ring for a complete recovery narrative, consistent wear matters.

Duplicate and conflicting data
Two devices may report different steps, sleep durations, heart rates, or workout summaries. That is normal. Decide which device is your preferred source for each category instead of treating disagreement as proof that one device is broken.
Fit, swelling, and durability
Use the sizing process carefully, account for finger swelling, and expect the finish to show wear over time. The perfect finish is less important than a size you can tolerate during sleep, exercise, heat, and travel.
Privacy and ecosystem dependence
Using both products means managing an Oura account and membership alongside Apple Health permissions. Review what Oura writes to and reads from Health, and consider whether you are comfortable consolidating health information across both ecosystems. Oura’s Apple Health integration is iOS-only, although its broader app also supports Android.

Battery aging
Oura’s advertised battery life applies to a new ring under stated conditions. Capacity declines with age, and actual endurance varies by ring size, settings, features, activity, temperature, and usage.
Should you buy Oura Ring 5 if you already own an Apple Watch?
Buy it if your Apple Watch is uncomfortable overnight, its daily charging causes gaps in your sleep data, and you genuinely want Oura’s sleep and recovery interpretation. In that case, the ring is a complementary health and wellness device—not a replacement watch.
Keep the Apple Watch alone if you already wear it comfortably, its sleep tracking is good enough, and your priorities are workouts, GPS, safety, notifications, and smartwatch features. You may be paying for a second set of measurements without gaining a behavior-changing insight.
Consider a subscription-free smart ring only if the ring form factor is the main appeal and you are prepared to compare current hardware, software, Apple Health support, privacy terms, and accuracy claims carefully. A cheaper ring is not automatically a better Oura substitute.
The decisive question is not “Which device wins?” It is: what problem remains after buying the Apple Watch? If the answer is sleep comfort, overnight battery life, or a desire for recovery-focused interpretation, Oura Ring 5 can be worth adding. If there is no meaningful gap, the Apple Watch alone is the better value.
