Whether a vintage watch is “overpriced” depends on what its asking price buys you—and what else you could buy for the same money. A May 21, 2024 Fratello Watches discussion by Michael & Balazs makes that case about the Tudor Big Block, vintage Cartier watches, the Seiko 6138-8020 “Panda,” and the Rolex Daytona. The authors say they like these watches but believe better options exist for the money. That is a model-specific value judgment, not a measured finding about today’s market prices.
What “overpriced” means in this discussion
The question is not whether these watches are appealing or worth owning. It is whether their appeal, design, movement, and brand identity justify the asking price when compared with other watches a buyer could choose instead.
Fratello’s article does not provide a market sample, transaction analysis, condition controls, or valuation method. It also gives no current price benchmark. Its argument is therefore best read as a qualitative challenge to compare alternatives—not as proof that any of these watches is objectively overpriced or that a particular asking price is unfair.

Tudor Big Block: weigh the watch, not just the movement
Fratello identifies the Big Block as a Rolex-family chronograph using a Valjoux 7750. That movement offers one comparison point, but the article does not provide prices for the Big Block or for other 7750 watches. A shared movement alone cannot establish that two watches are equivalent in condition, originality, design, or collector appeal.

For a buyer, the useful question is whether the specific Big Block’s design and Rolex association matter enough to justify its premium over other chronographs using the same movement. The source raises that comparison without supplying a price-based answer.
Vintage Cartier: assess the exact model
The article questions the value of vintage Cartier watches because it considers their movements “mundane.” That is the authors’ opinion about the value proposition; it is not a blanket assessment of every Cartier model or a claim that a movement determines a watch’s overall quality.

Compare the particular Cartier’s design, condition, originality, and movement with plausible alternatives before deciding what its price means to you. Fratello does not identify a standardized alternative set or publish model-by-model comparisons, so its criticism cannot establish a universal Cartier ranking.
Seiko 6138-8020 “Panda”: make authenticity part of the decision
Fratello calls the 6138-8020 “Panda” often faked and points to other Seiko chronographs as alternatives. That warning makes authentication a central purchase risk; it does not mean every listing is counterfeit, nor does the article quantify how frequently fakes appear.

Before buying, verify the individual watch and its components with a qualified specialist if you cannot establish authenticity yourself. Treat listing photos and seller claims as material to evaluate, not a guarantee. The article does not name an authentication service or give model-specific inspection instructions.

The article does not quantify a Daytona premium or compare condition-matched sales. It therefore supports asking whether another Valjoux 72 chronograph suits your priorities better, but not a claim that the Daytona is overpriced by a particular amount.

How to decide whether an asking price works for you
- Identify what you are paying for. Separate the features you value—such as design, brand identity, movement, or collectability—from the appeal of the name alone.
- Choose genuinely comparable alternatives. For the Big Block, consider other Valjoux 7750 chronographs; for the Daytona, consider other Valjoux 72 chronographs. For Cartier and the Seiko Panda, compare models that meet the same practical and aesthetic needs.
- Evaluate the exact example. Condition, originality, and authenticity can make two watches with the same model name materially different purchases. The Fratello discussion does not control for these factors.
- Set your own trade-off. Decide how much the specific model’s design and identity are worth to you relative to the alternatives. The source offers no current transaction data or fair-value figure to substitute for that judgment.
