“Girard-Perregaux For Gucci: Dive XL Watch Hands-On” suggests a specific collaboration and a firsthand review, but the available evidence confirms neither. The historical Gucci Dive XL’s reference, dimensions, movement and connection to Girard-Perregaux remain unverified, and there are no direct observations to support claims about wearing or testing it. Gucci’s current 40 mm Dive automatic is a separate, identifiable model—not a substitute for the XL.
What is the Gucci Dive XL?
The name in the title is not enough to identify the historical watch precisely. No verified reference number or reliable archival identification establishes which XL model is meant, when it was made, or its specifications. As a result, the available evidence cannot establish its case size, movement, water-resistance rating or other details.
That distinction matters: Gucci currently lists an automatic Dive watch in its US catalog, but it is identified as style 796779 I18B0 8605, not as the historical Dive XL. Its specifications should not be transferred to the older, unverified model.
Was the Dive XL made by Girard-Perregaux?
The connection is not substantiated by the available official sources. Girard-Perregaux’s Deep Diver page describes a separate heritage model family and a modern collaboration with Bamford Watch Department; it does not identify the Gucci Dive XL or document a Girard-Perregaux role in making it. That is not proof that no relationship existed, but it is not evidence that one did.

Until a source specific to the historical Gucci watch establishes otherwise, its maker, movement supplier and any Girard-Perregaux involvement should be treated as unknown—not inferred from the title.
What can be confirmed about Gucci’s current Dive automatic?
Gucci’s current US catalog listing identifies style 796779 I18B0 8605 as a 40 mm automatic Dive with a stainless-steel case and bracelet, a blue dial with an Interlocking G detail and Super-LumiNova indexes, a black ceramic bezel, and sapphire glass with antireflective coating. The listing states 30 ATM (980 feet) water resistance and a 38-hour power reserve. These are specifications for that listed current model only, not the historical XL. See Gucci’s US product listing.

Gucci’s separate Dive Instructions for Use gives a water-resistance statement of 300 m (30 ATM / 1000 feet) and says the Dive automatic collection meets ISO 6425 and Swiss standard NIHS 92-11 for diver watches. The manual also cautions: “However, your watch is not suitable for deep dives.” Its figures and guidance belong to the manual; they do not resolve the difference between its depth conversion and the current product page’s 980-foot figure, or identify the XL.

There are no direct observations of the historical Dive XL here. It would therefore be misleading to describe how it sits on the wrist, how comfortable it feels, how its finishing looks in person, or how accurately it keeps time. Nor can a water-resistance rating or collection-level manual substitute for a pressure test of an individual vintage watch.

For an owner considering swimming or diving, have the specific watch inspected and its water resistance checked by a qualified watchmaker before exposing it to water. Gucci’s manual also advises against swimming with a leather strap because water can accelerate wear. These ownership cautions do not establish the XL’s original configuration or present condition.
