Collectors commonly distinguish five marks, Maxi I through Maxi V, by details such as luminous-marker size, printing and text placement. Those clues can help describe a dial, but they cannot by themselves date or authenticate the watch. A 5513 Maxi is best assessed as a complete vintage watch, with its parts, condition, history and documentation considered together.
What does “Maxi dial” mean on a 5513?
The Rolex Submariner reference 5513 was produced across different dial eras. Collector references place its gilt gloss dials before the matte-dial period and later gloss dials after it; “Maxi” refers to a family of variants among the late matte dials. Rolex does not use “Maxi” as an official model or service designation.
Collectors commonly label these variants Maxi I through Maxi V. The labels describe differences in dial printing and layout rather than five formally documented Rolex editions. Depending on the mark, comparisons may involve the size and shape of the luminous plots, the position of dial text, and details of the typography and coronet. Some differences are subtle enough to require magnification.
These names are useful shorthand, but the boundaries are not a substitute for examining the actual dial. A label assigned by a seller or cataloguer should be treated as a description to verify, not proof of originality or age.

Can the dial identify or date the watch?
No. Dial traits can support a collector’s description, but they do not establish the date of the whole watch on their own. Collector references caution that serial-number ranges overlap and that service replacements can put a later dial on an older watch. Dating therefore requires the dial to be considered alongside the case and its serial context, and any known service history.
Nor does a convincing Maxi dial authenticate a complete 5513. A practical assessment considers whether the dial and hands are coherent with one another and with the case, movement, bracelet and clasp; it also weighs condition, provenance, service records and paperwork. This is due diligence, not a universal Rolex forensic checklist.

What to check before buying a 5513 Maxi
Ask the seller for clear, current photographs and records, and have an independent vintage Rolex specialist inspect the watch before a high-value purchase if it is not being bought through Rolex Certified Pre-Owned. Useful views include the dial and hands, case and serial/reference markings where they can be shown safely, movement, bracelet and clasp. Request any service documentation and provenance information as well.
- Dial and hands: Check the claimed Maxi mark against the visible printing and plot details. Look for consistency between the hands and dial, while remembering that appearance alone cannot prove originality.
- Case: Examine the case shape and edges for signs of refinishing, and consider whether the serial and reference context fit the seller’s account. A claim that a case is “unpolished” needs evidence.
- Movement and service: Ask for a movement inspection and dated service records. A watch that runs is not thereby proven to be mechanically sound or water-resistant.
- Bracelet, clasp and completeness: Check condition, fit and any claims that components are original or matching. Ask what is included in the sale.
- Provenance and seller: Evaluate the seller’s reputation, supporting paperwork and the specificity of the description. “All original,” “matching” and a precise Maxi-mark label are claims to verify.
- Price: Compare the specific watch with dated sales of genuinely similar examples, accounting for condition, originality, provenance, completeness, location and sale terms. An auction result is a reference point, not a market average.
Phillips recorded a circa-1977 5513 Maxi, case no. 5,081,792, sold for $20,160 in its 2021 New York Watch Auction. Phillips also recorded a circa-1982 5513 Maxi MK IV sold for HK$107,950 in its Spring 2026 Hong Kong auction. These are individual sales in different years and markets; they are not directly comparable without accounting for differences in the watches and sale conditions, and neither establishes a current valuation.

Private sellers and the vintage market
A private or specialist-market purchase can offer a broader choice of vintage examples, but the burden of checking the watch rests heavily on the buyer. If the seller cannot provide adequate photographs or records, or will not allow an independent inspection, treat that as a reason to pause rather than relying on the dial label.
Rolex Certified Pre-Owned
Rolex describes its Certified Pre-Owned program as a route to eligible second-hand watches at least two years old, sold by participating Official Retailers. Rolex says watches in the program are verified within its network, fully serviced and supplied with a two-year international guarantee. The available program information does not establish that a 5513 Maxi is currently offered through it, so check with a participating retailer for actual reference availability.

What does Rolex servicing mean for an original vintage watch?
Rolex recommends periodic servicing and gives approximately 10 years as a general interval, depending on the model and real-life use. That is guidance, not a fixed schedule for every vintage 5513. Rolex’s service process includes an assessment and estimate, separate work on the movement, case and bracelet, checks and replacements as needed, precision testing, waterproofness testing and final controls. Rolex says a serviced watch is returned with an international two-year guarantee covering replacement parts and labour.
Official service can involve refinishing and replacement of components that do not meet Rolex’s functional or aesthetic specifications. If preserving original vintage parts matters to you, discuss that preference and the proposed work before approving the estimate; do not assume that every original component will be retained. Rolex says every Official Rolex Retailer and Rolex affiliate is authorized to receive a watch for servicing. Its service overview also states that parts and labour availability is assured for every watch for at least 35 years after withdrawal from the catalogue, but this does not guarantee that a particular 5513 part is available today.

Rolex uses this question in its own service FAQ, but authenticity cannot be established from a dial detail alone. For a vintage 5513, assess the watch as a whole and use a qualified specialist inspection when buying outside Rolex Certified Pre-Owned. Ask for photographs, service records and provenance, and verify seller claims about originality, matching parts and the Maxi mark.
“How often should I service my Rolex watch?”
Rolex’s general FAQ guidance is approximately every 10 years, with the interval depending on the model and how the watch is used. The watch’s condition and service history matter, so have a qualified provider assess an individual vintage example rather than treating the interval as a guarantee that it needs no attention sooner.
