The Panerai Radiomir 1940 3 Days GMT PAM00628 and PAM00657 share the same basic travel-watch brief: a 45 mm automatic watch with a second-time-zone hand, an AM/PM indicator and a three-day power reserve. Their clearest difference is where that reserve is displayed: on the PAM00628’s dial or on the PAM00657’s movement side, visible through the case back. That choice changes the look of the dial more than the watches’ core GMT function.
What distinguishes the PAM00628 from the PAM00657?
Felix Scholz’s hands-on comparison, published by Time+Tide on 26 June 2017, identifies the PAM00628 with Panerai’s P.4002 movement and the PAM00657 with the P.4001. The PAM00628 puts its power-reserve indication on the dial; the PAM00657 shows the reserve through the case back, leaving its dial less crowded. Both references have a second-time-zone hand and a separate 24-hour indicator for distinguishing AM from PM in that zone. Time+Tide’s review

How do the GMT and time-setting features work?
The reviewer describes the GMT hand as a 12-hour hand, with a separate 24-hour display indicating whether the second time zone is in its AM or PM period. As Scholz puts it, “This is a 12-hour hand, which is convenient for reading the second time at a glance, but less so if you have problems remembering if it’s day or night in that time zone.” The AM/PM indicator helps resolve that ambiguity.

According to the same review, both watches also have a date window at three o’clock. The reviewer describes setting the GMT hand without stopping the timekeeping and says the seconds hand returns to zero when setting the time. These are descriptions from the review, not independently verified test results.
What are their size, case and water-resistance specifications?
Both are 45 mm Radiomir 1940 watches, with the collection’s cushion-shaped case and strongly styled Arabic numerals and markers. For water resistance, the Watchlounge reference database lists 100 m for both PAM00628 and PAM00657. PaneraiSource also lists 100 m for PAM00657; it identifies itself as unaffiliated with Officine Panerai. These are secondary reference records rather than current official Panerai product pages. Which reference makes more sense for a traveller?
Choose the PAM00628 for an on-dial reserve display
The PAM00628 makes the remaining power reserve visible on the dial. That is the more direct option if you want to check it without turning the watch over, although the display adds another element to the face.
Choose the PAM00657 for a cleaner dial
The PAM00657 moves the reserve indication to the movement side, visible through the case back. Its dial is therefore less busy while retaining the same basic GMT and AM/PM functions described for the PAM00628.

The 2017 review does not establish a travel-function advantage for one model over the other. The meaningful choice is whether you prefer a visible dial-side reserve indicator or a cleaner dial with the indication on the back.
