The strongest-supported first choice is a Richard Mille-authorized pre-owned boutique. Chrono24 Certified and eligible Sotheby’s Approved Buy-Now listings are other options, but their safeguards depend on the exact listing and transaction. Phillips may be worth evaluating for a specific auction lot; the available evidence does not establish it as a uniformly protected place to buy.
There is no reliable venue-wide ranking that proves four sellers are equally safe. For a high-value watch, verify who is selling it, how that particular watch was authenticated, what protection applies to your purchase, and what happens if it is not as described.
1. Richard Mille authorized pre-owned boutiques
This is the best-supported starting point because the safeguards are described by the manufacturer. Richard Mille says its pre-owned program, created in 2015, operates through an approved retailer network. Its page describes watches being restored to original aesthetic and mechanical condition and examined through servicing, repairs, or refurbishment by watchmakers trained at the manufacture. The work can include case and movement servicing, water-resistance tests, and final inspection.
Richard Mille states that each watch bought through a pre-owned retailer comes with a service booklet, certificate of authenticity, and 24-month international warranty valid in Richard Mille pre-owned boutiques and boutiques. Find the retailer through the official Richard Mille pre-owned page, then confirm directly with the shop that it is listed and that the specific watch and documents are covered by the stated terms.

2. Chrono24 Certified listings
Chrono24 is a marketplace, so the word “Certified” is useful only when the exact listing qualifies and the buyer understands which certification route applies. Chrono24 describes two routes:
- Partner Certified: A verified watchmaker working with the dealer certifies the watch before it is shipped.
- Chrono24 Certified: Eligible purchases can be authenticated at a Chrono24 certification center for a fee.
Chrono24 says successful certification produces a digital Certificate of Authenticity and authenticity guarantee, and that its Certified process checks the serial number against The Watch Register. The guarantee is tied to Chrono24’s stated authenticity definition and is time-limited; read the current terms for the certificate and confirm the route shown on the listing. Check the seller and exit terms
Certification does not make every marketplace transaction identical. Chrono24’s policy page says professional-dealer purchases have funds held in escrow for 14 days after receipt and a legal withdrawal right within 14 days. It says private-seller purchases have a 7-day escrow period and no legal right of withdrawal. These are platform policy statements, not a replacement for checking current local law, the exact seller terms, and the transaction route before paying.
3. Sotheby’s Approved Buy-Now listings
Sotheby’s Approved offers a two-year limited service warranty from the purchase date for qualifying pre-owned watches bought through its Buy-Now Marketplace. Its published terms describe coverage for specified damaged-part repair or replacement, with exclusions including water, shock, abuse, and excessive handling. The terms also say third-party servicing, opening the watch, or adding parts other than strap or bracelet components voids the stated warranty; Sotheby’s determines whether a claim qualifies.

4. Phillips auction lots, assessed individually
Phillips is a venue to investigate lot by lot, not a fourth option with established venue-wide buyer protections. A historical Phillips Geneva auction catalogue records materials accompanying a particular Richard Mille lot and says that lot’s pre-owned warranty was issued by Richard Mille for authentication purposes. That specific catalogue does not establish Phillips’s current inventory, general authentication policy, return rights, or seller protections.

For a Phillips lot, read the catalogue entry and sale conditions for that auction, and get written answers about the watch’s provenance, condition, warranty issuer, and available remedies. Venue names alone do not tell you whether a particular watch is a sound purchase. Compare the actual seller, watch, paperwork, and payment terms before committing:

- Seller and authorization: Identify the legal seller. For a boutique, verify it in Richard Mille’s official network. On a marketplace, find out whether the seller is a professional dealer or private seller and what screening applies.
- Authentication route: Establish whether the watch was examined by a Richard Mille-authorized pre-owned retailer, a verified Partner Certified watchmaker, a Chrono24 certification center, or a Sotheby’s Approved process—or whether the seller is making the claim alone. These are different processes, not interchangeable labels.
- Provenance and serial checks: Ask who checked the serial number and ownership history and whether the check is documented. Chrono24 states that its Certified process includes a Watch Register check; that does not establish that other sellers perform the same check.
- Condition and service: Request photographs of the actual watch, written condition disclosures, service records, details of replaced components, and an explanation of any aftermarket parts. Do not rely on generic model photographs.
- Documents and warranty: Treat original papers and an authenticity certificate as different documents. Confirm the warranty issuer, duration, geographic scope, exclusions, claims process, and whether independent service affects coverage.
- Payment and return rights: Confirm whether funds are held in escrow, how long you have to inspect the watch, whether a return or withdrawal is available, and what exceptions apply. Get the answer for the exact seller and purchase route in writing.
- Total landed cost and delivery: Confirm currency, taxes, import duties, shipping insurance, and who bears transit risk. These terms vary by listing and location.
