PAM00616 is the reference for the Luminor Submersible 1950 Carbotech 3 Days Automatic. It is a specific model, not the later PAM01616: Panerai’s press kit identifies PAM01616 as a separate Carbotech reference with a P.9010 calibre, while PAM00616 is specified with the P.9000. The PAM00616’s combination is straightforward to summarize: a 47 mm Carbotech case and bezel, black dial, date, small seconds, rotating dive bezel and a stated 72-hour power reserve. Its personality is less restrained than those specifications sound: the large case and mottled, layered surface give it a distinctly technical look.

Carbotech is the PAM00616’s defining feature
Fratello’s 2015 review describes Carbotech as a layered material with a distinctive structure, lightness and corrosion resistance. Visually, the layering creates a matte, mottled black surface that looks more technical than a uniform polished or brushed metal case. The bezel is also Carbotech, extending that material character across the watch’s most prominent surfaces.
That appearance is a major part of the appeal: the case does not read like a conventional steel dive watch. At the same time, the available reviews do not establish independent durability testing or quantify how the material fares against particular kinds of wear. Consider the material a distinctive design choice, rather than a guarantee that a particular watch will remain unmarked.
How the 47 mm case wears
At 47 mm across and 16.8 mm thick according to Monochrome’s 2018 review, PAM00616 is a substantial watch. Fratello reviewer Robert-Jan Broer found it comfortable and surprisingly wearable in his review setting, yet said he would not choose it as a daily wearer because of its size. Monochrome reviewer Rebecca Doulton likewise emphasized that the watch’s size is unmistakable.

Those impressions are personal, not a fit rule. Wrist shape, strap adjustment and the way a wearer likes a watch to sit all matter. If you are considering one, try it on and check how the case sits from above and at the side; diameter alone cannot tell you whether its thickness and overall presence will suit you.

The black dial uses luminous markers and Arabic numerals, with the date at 3 o’clock and small seconds at 9. The black rubber strap and blue Panerai accent give the otherwise dark design a small color contrast. Broer praised the yellowish appearance of the lume and blue details in his 2015 review, and found the strap comfortable.
Doulton’s 2018 review raised a more practical caveat: in some viewing conditions, the lume on the black hands could blend with the dial and make the hands harder to distinguish from the luminous hour markers. That is a reviewer’s observation, not a universal result, but it is worth checking the dial in the lighting you actually expect to encounter.

P.9000 movement and functions
PAM00616 uses Panerai’s automatic P.9000, with a stated 72-hour reserve. Its display covers hours, minutes, small seconds and date, while the unidirectional bezel is used to track immersion time. Fratello also notes that the hour hand can be adjusted independently, a useful feature when changing local time without resetting the minutes.
Monochrome reported two barrels for the movement in its 2018 review. The available sources do not provide an independent accuracy test, so the power-reserve figure should not be mistaken for evidence about timekeeping precision in a particular example.

Water resistance: what the 300 m rating says
The published rating is 30 bar, approximately 300 m. That is a substantial stated water-resistance specification for a dive watch, but it is not a substitute for checking the service and pressure-test history of a pre-owned PAM00616. Water resistance can depend on the condition of seals and the watch’s maintenance; the model rating alone cannot verify an individual watch’s present condition.

PAM00616 makes the most sense for someone drawn to Panerai’s oversized Submersible form and the layered, matte appearance of Carbotech. The movement and dive-watch functions are clearly specified, while the 47 mm size is central to the experience rather than a minor detail.

Verdict
The PAM00616 is a characterful, highly specific take on the Panerai dive watch: large, black and visually shaped by Carbotech rather than conventional metal finishing. Its P.9000, 72-hour stated reserve, date, small seconds and 30 bar rating make a coherent functional package, but the size is a genuine commitment and the reported legibility concern merits a personal check. For the right wrist and taste, the material and presence are the point; for anyone unsure, an in-person try-on is the best test.
