The Patek Philippe Calatrava 570 is a vintage reference introduced in 1938, according to Michael Stockton’s Fratello feature. His December 2023 Christmas special traces the reference’s history and variations, then focuses on one 1962 white-gold example. That distinction matters: the featured watch’s dial, movement, dimensions and wearing experience describe one 570, not the entire reference.
What is the Patek Philippe Calatrava 570?
In his December 25, 2023 Fratello feature, Michael Stockton dates the reference 570’s introduction to 1938 and describes it as a larger version of the reference 96, which he dates to 1932. He reports that production continued until 1972, with an estimated total of about 2,000 pieces. Those dates and the production estimate are figures reported in the feature; they are not independently confirmed here.
Rather than a single fixed configuration, the 570 appeared in different metals, dial styles and seconds layouts. Stockton reports production in steel, three colors of 18K gold, and platinum. He also describes versions with either central or small seconds, alongside sector dials, rare Breguet-numeral dials, applied indices and drilled minute markers. These variations mean that the white-gold central-seconds watch in the feature is one expression of the reference, not a template for all 570s.
How the reference 570 varies
When comparing examples, consider the individual watch’s metal, dial, seconds layout and case condition. Stockton associates the reference with hand-wound calibers including 12-120 and 12-120SC; his featured watch uses caliber 27 SC, which he says was introduced in 1949. He explains “SC” as indicating central seconds and describes the featured movement’s central seconds as directly driven. These movement details are reported by Stockton in the feature.

The white-gold 570 in the Fratello feature
Stockton recounts searching for a wearable white-metal Calatrava, consulting Eric Wind and buying the watch through Wind Vintage. The example came with an extract from the archives showing 1962 as its production year, according to the feature. Wind Vintage’s press page also confirms that the dealer sold Stockton a white-gold reference 570; that confirmation does not establish current inventory.

Case, dial and condition observations
Case shape and finishing
Stockton describes a case with vertical sides, a flat “coin edge” bezel and lugs that curve down toward the wrist. He praises the sharp edges and horizontal brushing on the sides of his example, and cautions that polishing can soften the lugs and remove that brushing. In his buying discussion, he prioritizes unpolished lugs and a strong bezel. These are collecting observations, not a complete inspection or authentication method.
Dial details
For the featured watch, Stockton describes a silver dial with applied indices, dauphine hands, central seconds and drilled minute markers. He says the raised logo lettering was made using champlevé enameling and that the dial appeared untouched to him. These are his observations of this particular watch; they do not establish the originality or condition of another example.

Wearing the 570 and choosing a strap
Stockton presents his 570 as a dress watch that can also serve as a discreet daily watch. His example measures 35.5 mm across, with 42.7 mm lug-to-lug length and 20 mm lug spacing. He says the lug length and width give the watch wrist presence, but that impression is personal and cannot guarantee fit for another wearer.
The feature reports no water resistance, so Stockton advises caution around water. It also identifies a strap-fit detail: the featured watch has large lug holes and uses large-diameter, shoulderless spring bars, as explained to him by Eric Wind. For that configuration, Stockton says a strap without the commonly built-in quick-release spring bars is needed. A useful search phrase is 20 mm leather watch strap without quick-release spring bars; confirm fit with the individual watch before buying.

What did the Fratello feature say the 570 cost?
Stockton wrote in December 2023 that prices seemed to start at US$30,000. This is a dated author observation, not a current quote, appraisal or verified sales range. The feature does not establish present-day value or availability. Those can vary with the watch’s metal, dial, originality, condition, provenance and market timing.
What to keep in mind when evaluating an example
Stockton’s collecting priorities—case sharpness, retained brushing, an apparently good or non-refinished dial, and a strong bezel—can help frame questions about condition. They cannot prove authenticity or originality from photographs alone. A specific watch needs its own assessment; the Fratello feature is a collector’s account of one example, not a substitute for that work.
