How the 5396 annual calendar and moon-phase display work
The 5396R-016 lays out its calendar information in a balanced, symmetrical arrangement. Day and month appear in separate apertures at 12 o’clock; the date is shown at 6 o’clock. The lower display also incorporates a 24-hour indication and moon phases, while a central seconds hand provides sweep seconds. Patek Philippe describes the watch as a self-winding annual calendar.

An annual calendar distinguishes itself from a perpetual calendar in how often it needs correction. Patek says the 5396’s date and month require manual correction once a year, at the transition from February to March. The manufacturer’s 2016 release says caseband correctors make the adjustment take only seconds. Patek also claims the moon-phase display needs a one-day correction only once every 122 years, assuming the watch continues operating as described; that is the manufacturer’s stated precision, not an independent test result.
Patek Philippe says it invented and patented its annual-calendar mechanism in 1996. Its current 5396R-016 page describes the mechanism as requiring only one correction per year.

Movement details
Patek lists caliber 26-330 S QA LU 24H at 33.3 mm in diameter and 5.8 mm thick. The movement has 339 parts, 34 jewels, a 21K-gold central rotor and a frequency of 4 Hz, alongside the 35–45-hour power reserve. These are specifications for the current 5396R-016 listing, not a guarantee that every earlier 5396 uses the same caliber.
How the current reference compares with earlier 5396 versions
The 5396 has been offered in multiple case metals and dial configurations. In its 2016 release, Patek Philippe presented white gold with a dark-gray dial and rose gold with a silvery-opaline dial. That release listed 38.5 mm diameter, 46.8 mm lug-to-lug and 11.2 mm thickness for the 5396R specification. Those historical measurements should not be assumed to describe every later reference.
Fratello describes the 5396 as debuting in 2006 and the 5396R-016 as a 2026 update. Its hands-on review discusses that particular reference and offers the reviewer’s own impressions; those observations are not a substitute for an individual fit assessment.
A different example is the 5396G covered by Hodinkee in April 2024: a white-gold case, gradient blue dial and baguette diamond indices. Hodinkee reported a US$63,510 MSRP at the time of publication. That is a dated US price report for the reviewed 5396G, not a current quote for the 5396R-016.

- Exact reference: Confirm the full suffix, since case metal, dial, indices and movement details can vary across the family.
- Dimensions and fit: Use the measurements for the exact reference. Patek’s 2016 5396R release lists 46.8 mm lug-to-lug and 21 mm lug width; the current 5396R-016 page lists diameter and thickness. Diameter alone cannot establish comfort on a particular wrist.
- Calendar operation: Understand that the annual calendar requires a yearly date-and-month correction at the February-to-March transition, rather than the less frequent correction interval of a perpetual calendar.
- Price and availability: Treat published prices as reference points tied to a source, currency, region and date. Fratello’s 2026 article gives publication-date figures of €63,600, US$67,517 and CHF 54,000 for the 5396R-016; these are editorial price references and may not reflect a current offer or availability. The current Patek page displays a regional price, not a universally applicable quote.
